Nintendo Wii Name is 'Gay' says Large Japanese Publisher

A news article claims that in several probes by IGN over the Wii name, one large Japanese publisher has been quoted as saying the Wii name is 'gay'. Another has been quoted as believing that with the new 'Wii' name, Nintendo are saying they're not even trying to be taken seriously.


When it comes to the Wii, of all things Nintendo doesn't want you to call it is a "next generation" console. Nintendo sees its Wii as a "new generation" machine, giving it a name that bucks the trend of traditional consoles. The Wii is definitely not your typical console with its unique motion sensitive controller. While the outcry of the controversial naming of the console was heard across internet message boards, the folks at IGN polled a few publishers and developers their reactions were unsurpisingly similar.

A member of another large Japanese publisher was harsh with Nintendo's Wii: ''Gay. Sorry if that offended. I hate using that word in the pejorative sense, but it totally applies this time. That's how terrible I think it is. Seriously, what that tells me is that Nintendo has given up all pretense of making this a serious consumer electronics platform that mainstream American can get behind. Joe Schmoe from middle America can't say 'Wii' with a straight face, whereas he has no trouble saying '360' or 'PS3.' Nintendo basically threw up their hands and said, 'You know what? We're not even going to try to be taken seriously.'''

Nintendo has a lot of explaining to do and they have chosen to let the system speak for itself. The first chance the gaming industry will get to witness the mechanics of Wii games will be next week in Los Angeles at E3. thats too funny i work at a gamestore i was telling some kids about the new name they though it was a joke and said they would just keep calling it the revolution becuse they thought the name was gay as well wii is just to close to pee what is nintendo thinking oh well whats in a name anyways its still not in hd and isnt really next gen anyways. if it cost more then 149.99 it wont be worth it. good luck nintendo you will need it going up against the ps3 at the end of the year the only thing that will save the wii is im sure anyone who wants one will be able to get it not like the 360 or the ps3. im sure ebay will be a hott spot in nov for ps3 for the people not smart enough to preorder it. it looks like may 9th will be the start of preoders get your 50 bucks together and be ready

im not realy impressed with the slightley improved graffics of the outher consoles and I do not know if the wii's crazy new controll system it going to be any good and it dose bring back memorys of the power glove but at least they are trying differint things

anyhow....the people who are comparing the ds to the psp are seriously mistaken. do they even realise that the ds is still YET to show remarkable support in the rest of the world apart from japan?

japanese will buy anything that looks stupid yet the tv or utada hikaru tells them is cool. the ds is a low powered unpractical piece of junk that doesnt even control mario 64 right. its TOTALLY inept....

i sincerely hope that with the wii nintendo gets out of the hardware business, afterall mario is much better suited on other consoles since it is a third rate platformer when compared to jakk and ratchet or sly games....

mario sunshine sucked like a hooker handed a 500 bucks.

That's not really true, it has substantial support from publishers the world over. Wait until you see all the unannounced games at E3.

You do know you're supposed to use the stylus or handstrap for maximum control in Mario, right? I wouldn't say it's low-powered at all, considering the stuff it can render (and let's not forget that it's doing it for two screens at once). Not as powerful as the PSP, sure, but we all knew that anyway.

by the way the nintendo ds is a watered down ps1 type 30 mhz (actually less powerful than the ps1), which only renders ONE SCREEN in 3d and the other in plain 2d....

and im really sorry, but if i wanted to play point and click adventures i would have stuck with my pentium 1 in grade school circa 1996....

huh what do u mean u cant compare the DS to the PSP? i can and i gotta say since i figured out my wireless router ive been playing mario kart for longer than any game on the PSP, im comparing the 2 and i say nintendo is the winner by far inovation is way better than graphics.

and i gotta admit i still hate the Wii name... i might go buy a PS3 instead now i dont wanna be caught dead with a console that sounds like urine, now before u blast me consider this, would u buy a Mercades if they brought out a fecies class? didnt think so
