New Nintendo Next-Gen Console Name Revealed - Nintendo Wii

We received an e-mail on behalf of PR agency Cake (UK) along with a quicktime movie animation, which announces the new name of the Nintendo's next generation console, say bye bye to the Nintend Revolution and hello to Nintendo Wii. The name 'Wii' sounds alot like 'WE' which emphasises the console is for everyone!

While the code-name "Revolution" expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.

Looks like a sony walkman style logo. Strange name Wii, not exactly catchy. NRV and revolution sound much better. Its not really a logo either, the marketing department need to loosen the purse strings.

The Nintendo 'Wii' was about a revolution in console gaming, the Revolution name suited it alot better. It may seem clever, online as 'wii' sounding like 'we' and a nice animation, but imagine when you're talking to a friend 'Oh I am just going to play on my wee'...it doesn't sound right and is rather comical.

It was a nice name in theory, but in reality not so good.

Well it was a given Revolution would change... Dolphin, Katana... etc all sound cool but never ended up being the name... Dreamcast sounded funny too.. I'm sure it will grow on us...

Wii might be ok in Japan, but in America and Europe it doesn't sound very cool. I don't care about the name, but some people do. I think the name Gamecube hurt the console in America; I think the name Wii might too.

that's hilarious... although the news is shocking at first, and seems kidn of weird, it is the same reaction I felt when I saw the remote style controller. Although with this, it's hard to see how it can grow on people in the next few weeks. Maybe they can change the name again, i do agree Revolution was awesome... but Nintendo Wii makes no sense... but i guess a X-Box or a Play Station or a 3D0 or a Dream Cast aren't really catch terms at first either...

i just noticed if u dot all the top portions of that W, and add up all the dots, u get 5 (this being nintendo's 5th console, nes(1) snes(2) n64(3) gc(4)) maybe that adds some other significance to name it this way (i'm just trying to make any kind of sense for this name... like most of u guys i thought revolution was 1000x better)

Like I care about the name... the main reason I am looking forward to the system is because of the 'lame' controller...

It's about the gameplay, not the 'power'... otherwise everyone would be flocking to the PSP over the DS... and we know that's not the case... ;)

Get over the 'spec whoring' and start concentrating on what matters.. innovation and entertainment.

I think they will end up keeping the Revolution name in the US/Europe and Wii
in Asia, because 'Revolution' is a real tongue twister for the Far East Asian population;)

Every time i see WII, I think of WWII... This is a stupid name.. The controller will probably get as much use as my ddr dance pad and my ROB... This console might make the big N focus only on portables..

Nintendo has always done stupid things.. Like no backlight for the original GBA.. Or no headphones on the SP.. And not giving me a job...
