Hi All,
I have a problem at the moment, and wanted to ask you guys what you thought I should do. I have a 1.5 PSP, and my X Button is starting to not work. It is working, however, I have to press down on it really hard. This makes playing certain games near impossible.
I have a Best Buy warantee, and supposedly they replace a disfunctional unit with no questions asked. But here are my problems:
1) If they replace the PSP, what do you think my chances are that Best Buy will still have any PSPs with versions 1.5, 1.51, 1.52 or 2.0. Are they still around at all, or are they pretty much gone now?
- If they are still around, how cool are the sales people if you ask them to look for a box that contains the letters A,B,C or F?
2) I was thinking of opening the PSP myself to see what is wrong. If I open the PSP, how easy it to get dust on the screen once the PSP is opened? If I am jsut working on fixing the X button, do I have to have the screen exposed or no? Has anyone had this problem before with the X button, because I would hate to open it and find out it is the board and not the pad that is defective.
Any help would be appreciated.

If you exchange, you will not get a psp with version 1.5 it will most likley be a 2.1 or higher. Get yourself a phillips 001 screwdriver and get to work, take the faceplate off but be really careful dust does get in and underneth so be really calm when doing this and remember not to try to clean or wipe anything it will just keep getting worse with debris and dust.
Once you have taken off the faceplate flip it over and look at the back of it that's where your buttons are located, see if there is any debris stuck in the circler plastic disc where the buttons are, clean it all away if that doesn't take care of it you can grab a replacement circler plastic disc that contains all of the buttons and all you have to do to install the new buttons is pull out the old circler plastic disc that holds the buttons and put the new plastic disc in the open space and there you go fixed factory style.
PS.. I took my 1.5 apart when I first got it and haven't done it since so sorry my memory isn't that great.

Thanks for the response ZigZag. I think it's how Sony put the PSP together. I have one of the original US 1.5s and I think they are having the same problems as the JAP PSPs with the square button.
I sort of fixed the x button issue, but to the slight sacrifice of the square button. All I did was take compressed air, and moved the circle button to the side a bit, and blow the air in. I was hoping that thier may have been a spec stuck under the X. That did it for the x. However the Square doesn't seem to push down just right at the moment. It feels like it is off by a coupke of centimeters. So I think its how the plastic is laid out on the PSP buttons. The square button is working so I am satisfied for now, but I really need to get new buttons for the PSP.

Buddy, don't be stupid. You made the right move in purchasing an extended warrenty on your system. USE IT. If you open your PSP you void the warrenty. This means you will not be able to replace it at Best Buy with no questions asked. There is a chance that they won't notice, but if they do, your f$cked. Here's my suggestion if you are really having a problem. Go get a replacement from Best Buy and forget all of this nonsense. I stayed faithful as long as I could to fw 1.50, but in all reality, it was a ***** to deal with. Just read the reviews and buy the games with good ratings. Use the PSP for what it's ment for. This is just a suggestion, so don't go all crazy on me for giving my opinion. I am just giving you wisdom from some who went legit.

Honestly, I have beaten 6 games since I got my PSP on launch day. So it has nothing to do with legit. It has everything to do with PMP and Emulators. I commute 4 hours daily, and unfortunately Sony's crap ass support of their video player has me sticking with 1.5.

I just came back from a Sony story having brought in my PSP for repairs (the xbutton is no longer working). They told be because I have an original and it is out of warranty that it would cost me $120 canadian just to send it away. I am so disgusted, this is an adult owned system that has been used without abuse.
You're right when you say that Sony really does suck when it comes to repairs especially on a one year old system.
