View Full Version : Sony's Blu-ray Disc PlayerBDP-S1 for Pre Order at $999.95
Sony have now put up their Blu-Ray Disc Player 'DDP-S1' for pre order at SonyStyle.com for a price of $999.95. This is a pretty expensive price - almost double that of Toshiba's HD player, considering the PS3 will have Blu-Ray playback compatibility - looks like the PS3 will be considerably more expensive than the Xbox 360.

Looks like the PS3 is going to be incredibly expensive or Sony will employ some form of loss leader technique, prices may fall within a few months but not majorly.

I'll admit to not following the new types of players, since I currently lack the knowledge of which one will win, and the cash, and a HDTV. But last I'd heard, this Blu-ray player is no more expensive than the cheapest Blu-ray player unveiled so far.
That doesn't mean the PS3 will be closer to $1,000 when it launches though. Even if no Blu-ray movie adapter needs to be purchased for the PS3, how long would you (random guessing here) keep using LS+Circle+Triangle when doing a forward visual scan? Spending an extra $60-$80 for the PS3 Blu-ray remote might seem like a better idea, compared to the controller button combinations needed for the same results.
Also, I doubt that you'll get the same performance and the same feature set between the PS3 and whatever self-contained player is on the market. This isn't a knock against Sony either, it's just the way the business works.

You can't draw a correlation between the retail price of a standalone Blu-Ray player and the PS3. The inital price of DVD players was ridiculously high as well, influenced by the exclusivity of the first devices. The PS3 isn't going to sell if it's more than $500.

If thats the size of a standalone BluRay player, then the PS3 is gonna be HUGE!

Damn right, they said that they were having probs getting the hardware into the giant case that they showed off last year so hope everyones got a spare room to put their PS3 in cause this thing is gonna need lots of room. I wonder of the power supply will be internal or will they have to come and install a new breaker into your panel to run this thing. :D

The PS3 looks like a big george forman grill and looking at the pictures it looks bit bigger then xb360.
The power supply will be external I remember ready that already someplace.

People might have to disown there children just to be able to get the room space for that massive thing. Or you could throw it in the backyard, put the hose to it and have an expensive slip and slide. :D
