I've recently got a qoob pro, installed it all fine, flashed it with 1.3a and burnt a backup to a dvd. However the disc fails to read:(

So I checked out modthatcube which stated 3 variables = burner, discs and POT

My burners a LG which should be of some quality and im using riteks. So the probelm must be the pot i guess.

Questions
1) What pot do u recomend? 200 ohms?
2) Do you have to use mini dvds for backup games? (im using full size)
3) I pressed cheats on qoob menu and it asked me to insert AR disc so i did. Now eveytime i press cheats it says "please insert some cheats" or something. Whats up with it?

1. 200 Ohms should be fine. Follow instructions at ModThatCube. Although, I'd advise to do a pot. adjustment only as a last resort.

2. You don't have to use mini DVDRs unless you plan on using the orginal Cube case. If you get a replacement case, you can use full sized media without any problems. You can also use full sized media and just play with the top off. That's what most of us did before they brought out replacement cases.

With Q1, try another brand of media like +R if you're using -R media or vice versa. If you burned the image slowly, try speeding it up or again vice versa. Keep in mind that not all Cubes are alike; what media works on some Cubes may not work with others. FWIW, I use full sized TDK DVD+Rs and I have not had one problem yet *knock on wood*. No pot. adjustment was done on my Cube.

3. See for IJTF_Cinder's post regarding new cheats. Upload the file available in that post onto your QP via USB.

You might also want to consider flashing Qoob BIOS 1.3c instead of 1.3a. See if that will help.

"1) What pot do u recomend? 200 ohms?"
Well, my was at 580 ohms as default, when i tried it at 200 it stoped reading discs so its pretty much bullshit that 200 works for all.

You should also try some fullsize DVD+R, i use TDK 8X burned at 8X, :)

Think this may be of use:

http://gamecube.nqtnews.com/media.php

it will show many things but will confirm what most peeps have found:

200 +/- 25 ohms is a good average of what works for most gamecubes though there are exceptions to this - even I will agree but is just a guide

Ritek G05 full size media is a good compatible media for most gamecubes

Also what the table shows is some LG burners - LG GSA-4160B seem to be the ones that were not so good for gamecube in some cases
(Also it seems to show what others say that most recent 4x and above Pioneer & NEC burners produce very compatible discs)

I'm not just quoting this table or what is already written in many tutorials or guides - over 20 cubes modded and my findings in general confirm what has been said by others as well as myself.

Though I do have 1 cube laser that is running best at around the 350 mark but in general the 200 was quite a good ballpark figure

Nero 5 or 6 is another thing that makes a big difference - other burning software that is perfect for xbox is crap for gamecube iso's

The main problem is that when peeps mod their cube they can run into many different problems. The iso could be at fault, the media, burner and/or software used and finally the pot may need a tweak but only if you know what you are doing and gonna go carefully

Yes +R can work - i got a Mario Kart on +R running on most cubes but in general G05's are used most coz it's a very compatible media for dvd players/xbox/ps2 and gamecubes

I would suggest burning a few iso's at the slow & med speed in nero 5 or 6 with different media brands and types. If you really find you need to adjust the pot then first you MUST use a multimeter to note what she is set to and also to ensure you don't go too mad and blow the laser

The big problem is in certain cases, peeps problems are from other factors and they tweak the laser too much and can blow the laser - when the media/burner/bad iso was probably at fault

I'm lucky I have some bits around to test stuff out first - like a qoob sx cube with the laser removed to allow me to test other cube lasers on

There is no point fitting a xeno-gc mod to a laser that is on it's last legs. Got some media that is a tad picky so in general if I can get that to boot then in "theory" the laser should boot most compatible media without too much fuss.

Alas many peeps don't have these options and some have to fumble their way through trying a few things out first before any hope of booting a game

GameCubes are similar to the ol DreamCast - most ran backups quite well but a few people had nothing but nightmare after nightmare

Like many things - when it works well we all seem to take it for granted and forget about the people or the times when ourselves were being driven mad by boot failures or disc errors

hopefully with a little more time you should find a method/disc that works for your cube

best of luck
