The Xbox 360 Firmware 100% Hacked ?

Ok a while ago we brought to you news about how the <a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=6289" target="_Blank">Xbox 360 firmware routines were still intact.</a>. Well The Specialist has followed this up and it looks like months of hard work have come to an end, with the Xbox 360 firmware being well and truly hacked, the security details posted a few days ago are said to be proof as well as a video, this hack will not be made available publicaly it seems.


Months of hard work have come to an end. The 360 FW security details were posted a few days ago already, so why not make it official It's been done.

The Ice team had a plan to promote some silly webstore, if you look at the people who the specialist quotes as contributors you will see some very knowledgable and respected people in there such as ozpaul and loser, Gael360and the rest. Do not turn this into a flame war, if you have something valid, technical to question this then feel free to do so.

hmmmm clever what theyve done, but its not very useful, the firmware has to be flashed for every game. They flashed the media check of pgr3 into the firmware. So it always reports the pgr3 media check. So if you wanted to play GRAW you would need to get that media check and put that in the firmware.

All this spec is useless to everyone, even MS cant fix it because for one its too late and two its unfixable.

I don't see why everyones getting into a tizzy. Different region games will not work either, as it don't bypass the region check. You can't modify the games at all or they won't work. This hack needs quite a bit more work before it will be useful to the majority of people who want to use it for imports, cheats, game hacks - right now it serves no legal purpose at all.

I say give it 3 months and the team will go sour, or someone outside the team will use their resources from the website to do it themselves - then sell the guts of the idea to a chip producer for a good lump sum and you will see chips out for the console by end of year.

For those who think its fake, take apart your 360 and slap a backup in it. I bet after it red screens and tells you the disc is not authentic the disc stops spinning.

Their interest from the start was never to make it public, if you watch the video there is a small dig regarding a quote about the security on the Xbox 360 from an MS official, I think this was truly done for the challenge :).

I dont have an xbox360, and I am not all that inclined to go looking into the 360/xbox forums for more info on how they did it, but I do have to ask (since its not mentioned above and not absolute in the old news post referred there), what was the method? Is it a custom firmware hack similar to what is done with XBox? Is it based on the DVD drive firmware hack that was being discussed some time ago?

I am wondering which firmware they replaced myself. If it was the whole xbox firmware or just that of a DVD drive. From my readings it seems like it was just that of the LG/Hitachi DVD drive - as most of the forum goes into detail on how to get the drive to work under windows. And they hacked the original xbox that way too.

Keeping it private and saving their asses from MS lawyers and huge legal expenses due to this small downside of piracy is probably more of their concern than giving a gift to the community. They were in it for the fun of hacking and proving MSs 3 years of research can be reversed in less than 4 months - showing how secure their product really is. As for researchers there is plenty to look at on their website.

Of course if its possible someone with no intentions of ever going to the US will develop another solution and market it. Money talks and if they know MS can't touch them what do they got to lose? Just relax for a bit, something will come forth one way or another. first gen hacks are always the worst anyway :)

Hmm... The video is proof enough for me.
1) It shows data loading, not in the fashion it would from a burnt DVD movie or audio CD as the laser is skipping all over the place looking for small specific files.
2) The disc dosn't stop spinning as it would when it is not authorized.
3) The video don't look to be edited in any way.
4) There is a huge forum dedicated to modifying the firmare for the 360 which contains plenty of info to memory dumps, logs, IC part numbers, assembly bins, C++ programmers and more..
5) The Specialist is a reliable source of info and is not trying to gain monitarily on this, so what would be his reason to fake this?

All considered it very well could be fake though. I hold neither a 360 or the hacked firmware code, or any devices to reprogram the 360 hardware.

I will say if this is indeed fake they did a DAMN good job at it compared to the I.C.E Team a few months back. The forum alone took like 90 different user accounts all posting different info, along with source code for it. If you don't believe it there is plenty of footprints to follow in to make your 360 do the same thing as shown in the video - its just not a neat package like with the original xbox.

On my tv I have 3 composite ports on the front and 2 scarts on the back.
What if they had a extra xbox under the table that was connected using a scart connection on the back of the tv? Wouldn' t we be noobs if we just believed this? It would be a nice joke though :D .

TheSpecialist and team are obviously very talented people, I don't think they are in this game for money, I think it's intrinsic motivation and the prospect of showing up Microsoft which really was the driving force. The video is real.

This info is posted at XboXScene and they say that The Specialist released all info on how to do this and that anyone who can assemble would be able to reproduce it. Here is exactly what was said:

What is this? A bit more info...
The hack is a modified firmware of the Xbox 360 Hitachi-LG GDR-3120L DVD-ROM drive (the security in the Toshiba/Samsung TS-H943 is said to be similar, so it's probably also possible with this drive ... but it does require it's own hacked firmware of course).
As you (should) know, all Xbox 360 executables (XEX files) are signed by Microsoft (with a private key only MS has). This means that if you try to change anything to the XEX file, the signature will be wrong and the file will not boot.
Now ... to protect from booting an exact copy of a game from a DVD-R or other recordable media, microsoft gave each XEX file a 'mediaflag'. This mediaflag tells the Xbox 360 from which media (cd-r, dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd-rw, hdd, dvdxbox, dvdxbox360, ...) the XEX is allowed to boot. Changing this mediaflag in the XEX header is not an option as it'll break the signature of the file (see above), so ... what's done in this firmware hack is 'break' the detection of the disc.
Retail games usually get a mediaflag where they only allow 'dvdxbox360' (Xbox 360 discs - different than a normal DVD because it has some specific bad sectors and special info in lead-in/out that can't be written with a standard dvd burner). The modified firmware will trick the DVD drive into reporting a DVD-R (or other) as a DVDXBOX360 to the Xbox 360.

How can you do this?
Well, right now you can't. The firmware has not been released to the public because it would mostly be used for piracy and that's not what this team wants. But the research done by these guys is public as you can read their discussions of the last few months on the xboxhacker.net forums, so people with good assembly experience should be able to duplicate this hack.

If the firmware was released, what would it mean?
Right now the Xbox 360 DVD firmware can't be flashed via PC, because there's no software to do this. Of course, drivers and flashing software for Xbox360 DVD drives could probably be written (and some people have been working on this), but so far this has not been done (atleast not publicly).
So, that means you'd have to open your Xbox 360, open your DVD drive and desolder the chip where the firmware is stored on.
Each Xbox 360 DVD drive has a unique key, if that key doesn't match what your console is expecting your DVD drive will not work.
So next you will need to read your current firmware chip with a special machine, to find your unique DVD 16 byte key (stored at 0x4F00). Then you'll have to insert this key in the modified firmware (or patch your original firmware) and program this modified firmware back on the firmware chip. Then put the firmware chip back in the drive, close DVD drive and Xbox 360 and I guess you're done.
As said above the hack would allow you to run MS-signed and unmodified XEX files only, so that also means the game must be of right region (as changing the regionflag in the XEX header would break the signature). Unsigned, homebrew executables would of course not work, again because signature check would fail.

Dont be so sure of that, this is a hack in a diffrent direction. A mod chip will be harder to make then a dvd firmware hack. This dvd firmware hack wont be ANYWHERE near as useful as a mod chip would be. Sure there are those who just care about free games, but I would venture to bet 80 to 90% of people with moded XboX 1's use there XboX for homebrew (emultators, XboX Media Center, Linux). A dvd firmware hack wont allow us to play with the best part of XboX hacking, homebrew!

Agree. They didnt release a nice little easy to use package out into the wild they did however post all the info for ANYONE to read and do THEMSELVES. I will point out for the second time in this thread that the XBox "scene" is not the PSP "scene". The people behind the initial PSP discoveries/breakthroughs were reliable, and although a great many have left because of attitudes like the above, there are still some very excellent/patient coders working with PSP homebrew. If you made this discovery and knew you would get sued by M$ if you uploaded it to the net, (not to mention causing problems for the other 20+ who helped work it out) would you be in a hurry to go to jail or worse?

The proof is in the pudding. Look at their forums and see the work they did, and see the span of time it took them to gather the knowledge and hardware to do it. Understand that "Proof Of Concept" work is not the same thing as a warezors downloadable dream. Please understand that giving congratulations is not the same thing as thanking someone, although they still deserve it for making the discussion on it open and public for any intelligent person to participate and learn from.

If anyone found a DNA treatment that could render people invariably young, what would be the long term effect to you? Yes they are all very respectable people but the guy above is 300% true.
I mean common. If they have been in the scene for so long they know the deal when it comes to the fakers putting in a extra 360 in the back and running a actual disc. Why they didn't show all the way around the tv to show that nothing was there. This is real fishy.

Stop swinging off these peoples D*cks. If they did do it great I'm glad they are so pro and all. I just think it's lame that they had to release that video. But if what bluecop said is true and all the info on the forums is detailed enough for some really smart guy to compile the info and make his own hack to release to the public then I guess in a very small way they did in fact contribute to the scene.

Wow, These ppl have done NOTHING to deserve being called fake's, there's no reason to belive it to be fake at all. I don't know if anyone will release this to the public soon but im 99.9% sure that within a week others will have this hack up and running on their 360's.

Maybee this is a good time for some of you to start learning some skill's to put something like this together yourself and contribute something to to the scene.

M$ could stop this by releasing tool's to the public allowing us to run homebrew code and releasing a public sdk while still preventing piracy. That may curve the dev of a mainstream hack using this method. Do i think they will really do it? Yeah right!

im not saying homebrew is just going to start cropping up in the next few weeks, all im saying is im looking forward to it alot. the xbox 360 really would be quite a powerful tool for homebrew (for the pricetag anyway).

There is plenty of info on how to dump your 16 bit key, how to hook your drive up to a comp and dump your firmware, how to reprogram the firmware PC-side - not too much along the lines of what has to be changed for the media flag to be constant no matter the media type.

I am assuming once the firmware is disassembled it would be easy to remove the check and output a constant byte representing the correct media flag for a person skilled in assembly, but the site don't make it too obvious, at least for me.
Just my 2 cents - someone else who has found this please point it out as I havn't seen it yet.

As for the chips the GC keeps coming to mind. (Xeno, DuoQ.. hmmm)

We all know that these people are talented at reverse engineering and writing code. You just have to wonder if Divineo was to get ahold of this or figure it out, would they sale hacked firmware DVD Drives for the 360 at $100 or more a piece? All the people that just want to use the exploit for piracy would be all over that. If that was the case, then you couldn't use Live with the hacked DVD Drive for the face that M$ could easily patch the firmware. So you would have to swap drives to play Live and to play backups.

Congrats to The Specialist and crew for figuring this out. I'm not a noob, but I can tell you wiring some chips or soft modding the first XboX is a lot easier then trying to figure out and execute the firmware hack.

It will probably only be a matter of time before someone figures out how to do something like HD Loader for the 360.

well original hackers never did things for glory, they did it for a challange. Infact some of the best hackers will hack code and then tell the company how to fix it. Many people get jobs in big companies this way. lol and I still cant believe how many people are really looking forward to the ps3. zeus. with respect in mind you still are obviousely incredibly biased on the subject. It's really not hard since it's a portable cam. all he has to do is walk to the back of the tv. That's why it's fishy. if it was 3 months work why didn't they walk 3 seconds to the back of the tv? and your statement is incorrect all they had to do was 1.) boot up the system and show the game running 2.) Take the camera to the back without a cut in the video.

I've read a lot of posts from TheSpecialist and he definately knows his stuff. I believe he did crack the firmware (along with all those people that researched it). The thing I don't get is why members of the scene try to "police" the scene about the piracy issue.

In the PSP scene, Team Emergency Exit put an ISO detector into a Homebrew Quake 2 port that if it detected an ISO it wouldn't boot. Do we really need this? Later, that check was removed but why do hackers feel they should protect sony/microsft/nintendo from piracy when they have in fact broke the End User License Agreement by disassembling/hacking their system?

actually i did. Ndure had a problem with his softmod installer for the pc and I took out my time to find teh bug. he made a new version with my suggestion and it worked. That was only 2 months ago......

well this is true, but drives dont usually change that much. I suppose they could make the newer games write a unique identifier into the drive, which is dependent on the keys stored in the ram. The new games would contain a program to get the keys stored and combine them to create the key. Obviosly this key would be stored in the same place the hack originates, just a thought like. They could also just include new firmware on all the games. When you put it in, you have to update.

edit: with the xbox they didnt bother patching this flaw, but with the 360 I feel they will patch it as quickly as possible.

Bottomline: they wont release it as themselves due to legal reasons. Will we see a more user friendly way of using what they have found? yes true to an extent. They also said that the firmware cant be flashed with a pc as of now. a program needs to be written, they also said that the firware needs to be created with ur key which u need special hardware to obtain. That being said. theyve said a program is being written to write the firmware from pc. (maybe u could read between the lines and relieze maybe the underground will see a firmware release and maybe it will be there app.)

so lets say they upload the firmware, u could look at it and say, wow it sure is a pretty firmware for the specialists xbox that i cant use. But really u should wait for more research to be done, more apps to be written, and ways to obtain the key for ur drive w/o hardware would be essential for most.

This is real and they get the credit. Done and done. If XBOX-SCENE says its real, then its real. Theyve never been wrong and they never give credit without proof. I mean plain and simple srry to tell u guys, ITS OFFICIAL, ITS HACKED, and the SPECIALIST has shown how.

There is a 30+ page thread on xboxhacker.net that has plenty of proof. He shows in detail how they did it and all the details leading up to it.

On a side note, this hack as a mainstream solution is 100% useless. First of all, you need a special programmer, which very few people have. Second, you need to be able to desolder and resolder a tiny chip to the dvd drive, again not something most people can do, and if you screw it up you cannot replace the drive since each one is unique to your console. Third, you need to know assembly, which most people don't. Fourth, you cannot create a mod chip based on this hack (unique key, timing issues, etc). Job well done guys, but since its only for piracy and since almost impossible for your average person, I see no need to release a "proper" hack.

actually the LG key can be dumped through software.
so all thats needed (for lg drives atleast) is a win32/nix flasher app.

I agree with Kevin Laynes post. you see the front of the TV and the jacks, the disc spinning, but whats to say their isnt a 360 pluged into the back? why dont they show a full view all around it showing just the xbox 360, a tv, a controler, and a hand playing the game. if you want, I can take mine apart and make the same video. I just dont want people to get upset about this post, but it just has to many things left unsaid, and shown. their are always people tring to make things look too good to be true, if it is true, then Im sorry for ranting about it, but im just not sold yet.

I have no doubt that some of the same people advocating holding back on public release of this hack have posted numerous questions on other forums on this board in for help in running game backups on all the other platforms here...

Also, desoldering a chip to flash and soldering it back is a trivial task. I've had to do the same to one of my DirecTV enabled TiVo's to get the functionality I expect from a piece of hardware that I purchased... but then again, maybe I'm a bit more technically inclined that some people here.

Just my $0.02.

I think your wrong there mate. I mean i have no idea what kinda scene youve followed/ consoles youve owned but im my experience backups have always been a pretty BIG issue.

When the more experienced hackers make discoveries such as this there is obviously alot of (-sometimes too blatent-) interest from people wanting free games, the intented purpose/homebrew potential of the hack and piracy can quite often come hand in hand, and in my experience backups have always been frowned upon, (quite often because complete newbies will flood technical forums wanting info hand to them on a plate, but actually have no technical knowledge whatsoever and have done nothing for the scene- plus its piracy)

In this case however, it is a hack directly on the disc drive to ONLY boot backups of games, it obviously wont allow any kind of unsigned code to run.
Because of this i fully understand their reasons not to release publically, to be honest i would have been hesatent to even release the notes on the forums, but i suppose it does allow other hackers to elaborate on their work.

What they've done is genius when you think about it, within days somebody else will figure out how to do this and make their firmware public, but as it was based on the original hacker's instructions, they will get the praise, where as the releaser will face the wrath.

modchips will be any kind of business as its a pure piracy mod - no homebrew at
all.

We have made some progress with a new read/patch/write app and no doubt you will all be plugging in your drives to your PC and having some fun shortly - all for free too as no modchips required (and yes we still want to play!)

Here is what we envisage...

this system is still in it's infancy, and alot of other things already plagued the launch. also, if this hack was released, it would be killed off soon thereafter. If I understand what he is saying correctly, then all they have to do is update some of the info in the bootsector of the discs themselves. I believe that specialist did just what he said. He and his "merry men" did this to slap microsoft back for taunting the community. I think they had it coming. but the release of this hack would only result in it's counteraction, and people bitching for them to hack what microsoft did to counteract the first hack. Then the cycle would just repeat over and over. IE see the psp scene:rolleyes:

The Dreamcast was a success in the US despite its rampant priacy, In fact I bought over 20 DC games even though i could get any for free. DC still makes money from software sales to this day. The reason it died was not piracy but the fact that Japan snubbed it and sega is a Japanese company.

true but piracy did infact impact the US sales. I myself bought every bell and whistle for that system including seaman the fishing control, 2 light guns (love house of the dead) multiple controllers and vmu's. but all in all the hack here just won't cut it more troublesome than worth here.......

btw Dreamcast is being relaunched in japan, as a retro dealie. one of the most innovative systems ever. games like Jet Set Radio, and the sports titles were top notch!

You guys seem to be forgetting the dreamcast hacks. The reason why piracy was so rampant on the dc was because you did not need to open the dc in any way to do. All you had to do was download a properly formatted iso and burn it to a cd and pop it in. That enables ANYONE with a dreamcast and knowledge of where to download the files to steal games. Once you have to open the console and mess with it, that limits who is willing to do it. Also, the dc wasn't updated like the 360 can be over live. Sega's only option was to remove cdr reading from its later models, which is fairly drastic especially since bleamcast used cdr. Anyway, this doesn't have the same implications as the dc. The ps1 was very easy to copy games, the ps2 was hacked inside of 2 months, the psp inside of 1 month, the xbox within 6 months, and I'm sure the ps3 won't take much longer than 2 months. There's a huge difference between not having to void your warranty or mess with hardware and having to open your console and solder a chip/mess with firmware that can potentially distroy your system.
