Nintendo relying on Innovation not Horsepower to drive the Revolution

In an IGN editorial, it is re-iterated the fact that Nintendo are relying on their innovation to drive sales of the console rather than beefy hardware with no brain inside.


I'm still dazzled by the high-definition graphics in some next-generation titles, but I'm much more excited by the prospect of Revolution's controller and the gameplay mechanics it will nurture. I pick up games now and I wonder how they might play better on Nintendo's new console. Just this morning, I was going through a level in the first-person shooter Black - a spectacular looking title that could easily run on Nintendo's new generation console - and wondering how much more intuitive the experience would be with the Revmote, as people have taken to calling it. I'm confident that Metroid Prime 3 will show everyone how it's done. And when that inevitably happens, will seasoned gamers look upon traditional dual-analog control as a dated and clunky configuration? I think the answer is yes.

I believe that Revolution is Nintendo's most ambitious console to date and I really think the company is on to something big. Certainly the DS proves that consumers are looking for something fresh. Revolution is that and more. The hardware is slick. The games will be there. The price point is right. And, unlike GameCube, Revolution is unlike any other platform in the market. I wouldn't make the mistake of categorizing the hardware as a niche endeavor. I think it's more mainstream - true mainstream - than any other videogame system ever. If Nintendo can capitalize on that, and I'm beginning to think it just might, the little console without high-definition graphics may be the system that everybody wants.

That is exactly what I was thinking, I went round to my friends house, who has a ps2 and his new xbox360 hooked upto his 50" HD plasma. He was trying to convince me that the xbox360 is the best thing and it blows (and will blow) the other consoles away. On the 360 we played call of duty 2, PGR, dead or alive 4, and a demo of fight night 3. Then we played black on the ps2, along with soul calibur 3, burnout 3 and fight night 3. To be honest those games were just as good as the games on the 360, albeit non hd, but still looked damn good (via component) on the 50". If he had an xbox instead of the 360 there would have been even less of an effect.

and people say ther is nothing to play on the psp umm there are plenty of good games on it. back to the consoles lets at least hope the revolution has 480p they say no hd but 480p isnt hd get a clue nintendo if it was hd they would sell more

I'm not a crazy! really!, I played the demo of fight night 3 and yes it did LOOK amazing but after the demo we played the full version on the ps2. apart from FNR3 being worse than FNR2 on the ps2, the games was essentially the same, it plays exactly the same. I am not so easily convinced that by updating the graphics the game automatically becomes the best. The game was the same. With call of duty 2, all the high res textures and detailed models, very nice, I bought it for PC after playing it. Fact is it bcomes second nature very quickly and you tend to ignore the graphics and concentrate on what you have to do in the game or do you face downwards and look at the floor textures while your ass is getting shot at? ;) I actually enjoyed black more than i did call of duty 2, because its a damn fine game, REGARDLESS of resolution.

Yes I didnt believe that the plasma was HD at first, but I do know what HD loos like and that plasma was definately HD.

LoL... now for real... its not about the graphics.. it not about HD, its about fun factor.. and let me tell i didnt felt anything different from an x360 (on 46" HDTV at 1080 and 720), from a ps2.. nor xbox... its more of the same.. equally to a psp... from ds.. i think it a lot more fun to play with a ds than a psp... but again some people are only about the graphics.. but im still betting for nintendo in this console wars... :D just my opinion..

PSPfanyboy up there listed some pretty bad games. A few of them aren't even released yet (I bet you know how good they are if you haven't played them :P).
Anywho, PSP games aside, the revolution isn't even out yet and people are saying it'll suck. I think those people should wait till it's out, try it, and THEN bash it.
The guy at IGN seems to think the innovation is a good thing.
Who cares about high definition? I certainly don't. The good thing that will come out of this HD thign is that either the 360 or the PS3 will fail if people choose HDDVD over bluray, or vise versa. Nintendo's smart to not reach too far ahead.
Also a lot of people I know stll play N64, Genesis, SNES, NES, and PSX games. They don't seem to care about the graphics, just as long as it's fun. A lot of pretty looking games out there aren't fun to play at all (many PSP games come to mind...).
I'm holding onto my money, and I'm going to spend it on a revolution. Nintendo's been around as long as I have and I tend to trust them.
Microsoft is a company I've never trusted (except for DOS), and Sony has a bad track record (they ripped off Nintendo to create the PSX, and all their consoles break easily).
Microsoft and Sony don't seem to have any idea what people want. They think it's pretty graphics, but I'd rather have a game that plays well that I can go back too.

i dont wanna add fuel to the fire or anything.. but all this bashing is kinda rediculous. the biggest thing that helps a console sell, is the games. im not saying xbox has all shitty games. bc it doesnt. not saying ps2 has all shitty games, bc it doesnt. etc for the rest of the consoles/handhelds. the DS vs PSP sales proves this. PSP OWNS ds as a handheld, i highly agree. but the ds holds more games that are fun for me, and obviously the mojority of the consumers. to say the Wii ( revolution was so much better ), is a waste of money and a bad move on nintendo doesnt make sense at all. do you really think we need a 3rd console trying to push everything they can in performance over the others? we dont, the ps3 and xbox360 can deal with that. thats why they are more expensive. but that doesnt mean the wii is lacking in any performance. its still better then the last gen consoles. nintendo is doing what their best at, next gen innovation. they started with the ds/ ds lite / and now with the wii. who says the wii doesnt have any good games either, the ones announced im hella excited for. as with all the other consoles. i dont even know how the wii is and im a game tester here at NOA in redmond. e3 will only tell. i personally have no favorate, i cant live w/o zelda, halo, metal gear, the list goes on. so bashing a system that isnt even out yet is idiotic. the MOST powerful console will cost the most (ps3), and we all know the games are gonna be good, so u cant bash on it. the price sucks, i hated buying my 360 too, but thats how the next gen consoles are. thats another thing nintendo is good at, low cost, great gaming machines. i think wii will be a good addition to my household, it brings so much more then just pretty graphics and a fast processor. simple as that.

you could be right psp may be better just wondering why in a games players house like ours we bought a ds then a psp then sold psp still got ds though :)

each system offers what it offers some are best in some ways and not so good in others.

Nintendo pretty much confirmed the Wii will be 3 times or 4 times better looking than the Gamecube. Have you seen the graphical detail in Super Smash Bros.? That game is like 4 years old and still impresses the hell out of me. Resident Evil 4? Need I say more? If it looks 3 times better than that I am sold. Seriously, if all you care about is graphics, PS3 and 360 are there for you choosy consumers. Nintendo would be out of their minds to simply beef up another console, sell it for $300+, and expect to beat anyone out.
