Ok, so I finally got the nerve to solder some leads on those super tiny legs on the DVD controller chip and finished the install.

I'm wondering if there are any in the know that might know where to look for errors based on this problem:

With chip enabled and original PS2 game DVD inserted, the loading screen brings me to the menu with "Browser" and "System Information". Going to "Browser" shows a white screen and tells me that I have a PS2 Game Disc installed. However, when I hit the "X" button, the screen goes black like it is going to load the disc, and returns back to the white screen with the picture of the disc saying that it is a PS2 game disc again. It will continue in this loop if I keep hitting the "X" button.

The exact same thing happens when I insert a PS2 DVD-R game backup. Sometimes it will go to a black screen and stay there forever (well, at least 5 minutes)

I know something is working ok, as it sees backups as being PS2 game discs. However, something is not letting either backup or original boot. Also, if I insert a PC iso DVD-R it gives me a Disc Error on that white screen. Also, the modchip disables as expected by holding the reset button down for a few seconds.

So close I can taste it.

So that makes me think that maybe one of the leads from the MB to the modchip might not be good. I've double checked all the joints and they seem fine.

Does anyone out there have more of an understanding about the functions that each of the leads on the modchip replaces - like the one that allows the disc to boot... It seems like there might be one error in my soldering that I cannot find.

Try using the ALT (R) connection in the v3 diagrams can't see were yours is hooked up its cut off in your picture. I myself had very bad luck with those ripper chips they are garbage.

Indeed. This image (http://www.legendcn.com/Ripper/RipperV1_1.jpg) shows R on the opposite side of the diagram that I used.

I will heat up the iron and report back. Thanks for the pointer.

no luck.

I tried both R's listed on the V1 diagram (http://www.legendcn.com/Ripper/RipperV1_1.jpg) and the V2 diagram (http://www.legendcn.com/Ripper/RipperV1_2.jpg)

I don't see anything similar to the R on the V3 diagram (http://www.legendcn.com/Ripper/RipperV3.jpg) that matches my board.

Grrrr. Stupid modchip. Too bad I've heard many reports that it is junk.

Noticed that console will operate normally if I desolder the G lead.

Hello akula169. I have the same board layout as shown in your diagram. I was wondering if there is anyone out there that would be able to give me instructions for the DMS4 Pro chip installation. I can't find the same board layotu that I have on the modchip sites and was wondering if the DMS4 Pro chip will even work with the board that I have. I have a version 2 playstation 2. I have determined this by, the facts that I have 10 screws on the bottom of my case, my model number is scph-30001, serial is u0770899, and date code is 0d. But again, I can't match up the chip placment on my board with those on the mod chip sites. The board shown from akula169 is just like the board that I have. Attached is the board layout again from akula169 that is like the layout that I have. Thanks,
