Psp Pal Box (how to tell what firmware)

hope this is the correct place to post this ?

my friend is after a psp and obviously wants to play his purchased games from memory stick like i can .

i remember reading some where that the psp box has a code on it that tells you what firmware is installed on the unit,

any one got any more info on this (its gonna be bought in the uk)

are these letters for the pal psp ??? because "north american release Confirmed" makes me wonder ?

my box has no letter and its from japan with 1.50 ?
