Joystiq report "A team over at the investment firm Merrill Lynch took the liberty of breaking down the component costs of the PlayStation 3, concluding that the PS3 will cost Sony $900 per unit at launch".

A team over at the investment firm Merrill Lynch took the liberty of breaking down the component costs of the PlayStation 3, concluding that the PS3 will cost Sony $900 per unit at launch. The figures which are based upon estimates and predictions, show that the lion's share of the parts costs come from the Cell processor and Blu-Ray drive, which total $580 alone. Fortunately for Sony, the firm has also estimated that the console's cost after 3 years could drop to $320.

What these figures show is that the fate of Sony's console lies in the circuits of two components: the Cell processor and the Blu-Ray drive. It's in Sony's interest to make sure that Blu-Ray drives and Cell chips are sold in vast quantities, which will lower prices and limit the amount of money that Sony will lose on each console. Of course we still don't know how much Sony will be willing to subsidize PS3s. Previous rumors have hinted that the PS3 will launch at $500. In other words, a $400 loss on each console.

For a little perspective, lets take a look at a similar example in the same industry, the Xbox 360. Earlier estimates suggested that the Xbox 360 costs $715 to make which means Microsoft is willing to lose around $350 per console sale based on a $299-399 retail price. If Sony wants to remain competitive with Microsoft (does it?) and rival the Xbox 360's price, it could lose as much as $600-700 on each PS3. Finally, it's worth noting that these companies have money to lose: Microsoft's revenue reached $38 billion in 2006, whilst Sony topped $70 billion in 2004.

lol, kind of knew somebody would think that was the case. A systems cost doesnt mean that is what it will sell at, the 360 i read ranges between 5 and 600 in manufacturing and that microsoft is losing about 200 or so per system. If the ps3 is infact around 900 at cost sony will probably sell it at id guess 5 to 600 so thats still quite high considering sony stated that the ps3 will not sell with a hdd package so it will be a system and a controller

can they really get away with $500 or $600 when they go to market? Will the ps3 have the games at launch to warrant that kinda price? only one that looks intresting to me so far is Metal Gear.

in my opinion if sony launches that high it may give M$ and nintendo a better go this round.

im not buying ps3 till its below $300 but i will eventually get one, unless it gets hacked open sooner then 360 and i can do all the same stuff i can on my modded xbox(1) but better like emu's and a form of XBMC.
if they can do that ill buy it right then, but i think the 360 will be hacked first and it will be along time before we can do any of that stuff on 360 or ps3 even after there hacked.

no doubt this is just more rumers put out by sony to hype the machine.
because they have nothing other than CGI and an empty case to show off.

Everytime I look at a Sony product its always well over priced and expensive so it may be true that it will retail for somthing stupid like 700 800 dollars I was reading the first blu-ray players are going to be 500 dollars min.
