Your laser is dead. I know this because this happened to me personally, and also I have helped other people on Afterdawn with this problem. You will have to get a new laser. However I would just buy a new ps2.

Well, technically, if the laser is dead, it wouldn't be able to load that screen, nor the CD games.
Anyway, you might want to try this. It's been a while since I had a flip-top, so bear with me.
First of, you'll need this program called CD Loader beta 3 or whatever the current thing is. You'll have to google it to find a download site. Burn it to a CD.
Next, load up the Swap Magic CD. When it asks to swap, flip it open and insert the CD Loader disc and press X.
It should load the CD Loader interface. When it says to load the disc, press the eject button and load an Original DVD Game with a large TOC. You can use the Swap Magic DVD, but the TOC on that isn't the largest. The game I used is Devil May Cry 2. Close the disc tray, wait a moment for the drive to read the disc, then press X.
The screen should turn red, and the CD Loader should tell you now to swap the disc using the EA method. This is when you take the game or Swap Magic out through the flip top and insert the backup you want to play. Then press X.
Quick and easy way of looking at the loading:
SM CD>swap with CD Loader>eject and insert ORIGINAL PRESSED DVD (Game or SM DVD)>swap with DVD backup.
Another thing is your backup. You may want to try either reburning the image, use an alternative recording program, use another brand or type of media, or try to get another image (personal backup or downloaded).
I hope this helps.

Well, actually, the laser could be partially "impared" so it won't load the DVD games correctly, however will load the cd games correctly.
Cheers and Good Luck,

Hey i've recently bought swap magic. I was able to swap the disks and everything, and I think I've managed to lock it before, but the game just won't work. the game is a copy, so I thought that may bethe reason, but then I tried the DVD swap magic disk and used an original american DVD and that didn't work either. ayone got any ideas on why it's going wrong? please let me know asap!

1. Explain exactly how you burned the disc, what program you used, and the media you used
2. As far as the American DVD goes, I don't think you can run a normal DVD off of swap magic if that's waht you're saying, just boot up the ps2 like you usually do.
My suggestions: use Verbatim DVD-R media format, Use DVD Decrypter to burn the game.
Also, you may not be doing anything wrong and the game may have to be rebuilt. what game are you trying to burn?
Also state any other posible helpful info that is relevant to the situation.
My full guide to burning ps2 DVD games I will post below

Important: Read all Instructions before proceeding with anything!
Important: to play backed up games you must have Swap Magic, mod chip, or a different program like swap magic.
1. Download and Install DVD Decrypter (unless you already have it)
2. Put in the ps2 DVD Game in the disc drive
3. Hit Mode; ISO; Read
4. Select the file destination by pushing the hard disc or folder button
4. Hit the green button that shows a disc pointing to a hard drive
5. Wait until it finishes
6. Open the Disc tray
7. Place a blank Verbatim DVD-R disc in the tray
8. close the tray
9. Hit mode;ISO;Write
10. select the file by hitting the hard disk or folder button
11. Wait
12. You're done! that was easy!
Post a Question for furthr questions and info. Good Luck!

I didn't burn the disk myself, this guy off ebay does it so I don't know what program he used. The game is shadow hearts: from the new world. In his feedback on ebay loads of people say that the copies of games he sells works, so thats why i think it must be me, or maybe the game just didn't copy right, that can happen sometimes.
Swap magic comes with a disk for games and a DVD disk which means you can play disks from any region, that's why i thought the american DVD would work because I've tried to use the american DVD normally and it wouldn't work, so a friend made a copy of it and that worked. Would real games work on it? Like if i ordered the american original game, would that work on swap magic? It's expensive at the moment as it's just come out, but i'd be willing to pay because apparently it's not coming out in the UK. Shall I ask the guy who sold it to me how he copied the disk and let you know?
Thanks for helping me!

i've just noticed a picture higher up on this page, of a TV with the swap magic screen and it says near the bottom of it, 'not a valid PS2 disk', that's what I get.

yeah, ask the guy, i'd like to know, also what media did he use?
You have the original game that he copies right?
Any other useful info would be greatfully appreciated.

First of all, Im VERY new to any PS2 Mods/swaps. Ive done hundreds of XBOX mods, but I just bought a PS2 for my daughter so I got a flip top and a swap magid 3.6. I also was having trouble with it untill I realized I was just doing it wrong. Not that you are too, but heres what I do and it works fine.
1) boot up swap magic.
2)press the EJECT button on tray and a screen comes up that says " INSERT LARGER TOC DISC" and you need to insert an ORIGINAL PS2 GAME that has a large gigabyte size (I use RESIDENT EVIL: OUTBREAK, or DEVIL MAY CRY). Shut the tray and the screen will say something like "LOADING TOC", then it will go back to the original screen but say "PLEASE LOAD YOU OWN PROGRAM".
3) At this point you now OPEN THE PS2 FROM THE FLIP TOP, and insert your backup game, shut the flip top, change your setting to NTSC (If you PS2 is NTSC),go back up and press load game. The screen should flicker a couple red slashes, then boot just fine in about 10 seconds.
I am using the "ULTIMATE SWAP DISC" now, but it is the exact same with just swap magic 3.6, and I have been able to boot HUNDREDS of backups (PAL and NTSC). If I have run into any games that wouldnt boot, It has always been because the backup was larger TOC than my original. Theres only a few games that are bigger than DEVIL MAY CRY, so If you use this game (its dirt cheap now), you should be fine.
ANYONE WHO CAN GIVE ME DETAILED INSTUCTIONS ON HOW TO USE HD ADVACE 2.0, I would appreciate it. The Ultimate disc has HD Advance 2.0, USB Advance, HD Loader3.5, HD Loader 7c, Cog Swap Loader, CD Loader V7, Etc., But I cant get any to load to my HD.

oh wow, thank you SO much it's working now! i'm so happy! the sound jumps a lot though, like every few seconds, is that because it's a copy? I'm on PAL, can I use an original NTSC game the way i've used this?

Hey man, glad I could help. This was a pain In the ass for me, and once I figured out I was just doing It wrong I felt like an idiot! I wish someone could have explained It in detail for me, it would have saved me alot of time...And yes you can use a NTSC game the same way. Did you have to use the PAL setting for your PAL system, or did you use the NTSC setting? On a NTSC system, if I use the PAL setting or the NORMAL setting, I just get a rolling screen in B&W.

Oh. yea... If you burn too fast you may get audio problems, as these tracks generaly burn first. Try burning at 2x speed with dvd decrypter as stated in an earlier post. Good Luck.

Velvetkiss, you need to use a PAL original as your larger TOC. I dont think a NTSC will be read correctly.

Man good idea to post how to use swap magic, here I was thinking it was something wrong with the way the disc was burnt and it was that he was using swap magic incorrectly lol, anyway, it's good when we all team up to work together and help each other.

why don't you just install a chip instead of all that fannying around
dg0896

When I was deciding between swap magic and a mod, I chose swap magic mainly because of the warranty. plus, it's a hassle to install a chip, I don't have the time. rather just swap the discs.

but once chipped there is no hassle you chuck the game in and it plays no swapping about or damaging your tray

that's true too, if I were to have one installed, i'd pay someone to do it. Less hassle, and they know what they're doing.

I was doing the swap thing for a while, but it got annoying when I had to do so much swapping to play a game, and if it didn't load in one shot, I'd have to redo the whole process again. Plus, my GF didn't want to do all that swapping just to play one game of Katamari Damacy.
I was going to try and install a modchip myself, but I didn't have the patience to do it myself. I sent it in to a reputable installer in No. Cal. and got it back within a week. If you do not want to install it yourself, you could always send it out. PM me, I can give you the link.
It's WAAAAY better to mod it than swap it. Trust me on this.

Hey, I resorted to buying the original game cos at some point in the game my copy would just freeze and I couldn't play it anymore. Thing is when I put the setting on PAL, I do have colour but the videos and cutscenes jump. It only works on the NTSC setting but then it's in black and white. Is there any way I can get it in colour but not have it jump?

Hi there.
I also have a problem with Swap Magic 3.6
Whatever I try (all things mentioned in this thread here), when I press X to boot the backup, the PS2 jumps back to the menu where you can select the MemoryCard or the CD/DVD.
I´m using a PAL SCPH 30004 (german) PS2.
Any ideas?

I ordered the Swap Magic 3.6 Discs (DVD and CD) from a web site. besides the fact that it came a month and a half late, they only sent the CD version, claiming that it booted burned and copied (imports and backups they say) DVDs and CDs. i believe it is impossible to boot a burned DVD from a swap magic CD. and when i tried to load a burned copy of Guitar Hero 3 and God of War 2, the screen said "not a valid PS2 game". i burned them with nero, so i dont think it's my burned discs. i just think a Swap Magic CD cant load DVDs. this is even what they say on the website:
Product Description:
This is the latest version of the Magic PS2 Boot Discs. Allows playing of most backup CD and DVD games on your PS2 console. You just have to add a no-solder modchip, flip top, or slide card to modify your console, except for the new PS2 Slimline. The Swap Magic Discs also work perfectly with the slide-card system. A perfect solution for playing backup and import games. No more waiting to play the latest PS2 games! Just a single swap - even with DVD games! These discs are built for NTSC-USA consoles.
Main Features:
Play CDR & PS2 DVDR backups of PS2 games on your PS2 console
Compatible with ever CD-ROM based PS2 game to date
For PS2 CD-R backups
For PS2 DVD-R backups
Magic Boot CD / DVD or Game Shark 1.7 or higher required
Games start with the single swap method
Works for all versions of PS2 (NTSC consoles only) including the PS2 Slimline
Then it says: "Product includes: Swap Magic 3.6 CD disc"
Here's the website i ordered from.
