I was hoping to find someone with some experience on the NEO 2.2 modchip.

I wanted to install some files to my PS2 memcard so that I could use the memcard exploit but being as though my PS2 is not modded I was kinda stuck with a burnt exploit installer disc that I could not run. Then I thought hold on a minute I can make my own NEO 2.2 chip so that I can then boot a CD. I don't have a copy of Action Replay but I don't think that matters as I only wanted to boot a burnt CD and as far as I know the NEO 2.2 can direct boot PSX discs and so should hopefully be able to boot this exploit installer CD. Please tell me if I am wrong about this as then I will probably just give up as it is not worth me buying an Action Replay just to install the memcard exploit.

Anyway I programmed myself a NEO 2.2 chip and then soldered it into my V5 PS2. I also made sure to use the capacitor 'cause even though some people say that it is not needed I decided better safe than sorry.

I then put my PS2 back together and started by testing a backup of a PSX game that I knew worked as I had used it with my PSOne before. The problem was that nothing happened, it didn't work but everything else seemed just the way it was before I added the chip. I then tried tweaking the POT but it still didn't work. I then tried programming another chip with a revised version of the NEO 2.2 code made specially for V5 PS2's but still no joy.

So now I am puzzled and cannot think of the reason why it won't work. I have put a link to the diagram that I used to install below and was hoping that someone will cast their mind back to when NEO 2.2 was popular and maybe come up with some suggestions for me. I've already tried Google but couldn't find any problems like this. Oh yeah and I've checked over all the connections and I've become quite used to soldering inside consoles so there are no problems there.

I thought that the neo 2.2 didn't directly boot games. I thought it just alowed you to open and close the tray without the ps2 knowing. Try turning the ps2 from standby, but hold down the reset button. Then when it gets past the electrons try letting go and see if the drive opens and closes by itself. This process only allows you to boot games with a swap method.

Here is some of the text from the .nfo file and it says PSX originals and backup automatic boot.

>> No capacitor needed anymore
>> Enhanced SCE management code
>> PSX Originals & Backups boot automatically
>> - no need to hold reset on either
>> CD Brake for the EA METHOD
>> - OPTIONAL WIRE - Useful for v4 PS2's using AR2/GS2 v1.4+
>> All timing issues resolved
>> - PSX and PS2 games boot reliably time and time again
>> Extra time allowed for EA METHOD
>> - Tray stays out for 6 seconds instead of 4
>> The whole mod is still on a 12c508
>> Same points as NEO2 for ease of upgrade

I think that you may be thinking of the EA Sport games method for this chip where the tray comes out for 6 seconds but I can't be sure as I've not got it working yet.

Don't suppose someone that has had the NEO 2.2 working before could maybe write the proper way to use it here. I have searched Google but have found contradicting results, some instructions say one thing and other instructions say another.

You could also use the old NEO KEY hex code you just need Power ,Ground and SCEX. It sends the code constantly but you could hook in a switch to shut it off. The NEO2.2 code should boot PS1 directly no swap needed.

it will auto boot psx backups

you only need points 1-4-6-8 of your diagram as the rest is for the dvd trick that dosn't work on v5 anyway

is your cap the right way round?

make sure you have good points

did you verify the chip when you had written to it ?

you had pin 1 in your programmer in the right place?

I've put the cap the right way (posotive to pin 2 on chip and negetive to the motherboard)

Checked all points and they are all fine

I've verified the chip and I've tried programming another chip and it still won't work.

Yep had the pins in the right place in the programer.

Now as for pins 1-4-6-8 only being nedded I've never heard of that could you show me the diagram please. I've heard of the 5 wire install on the v5 and on the diagram that I've found it only has pins 1-2-4-7-8 connected, all the same as the diagram above apart from pin 2 takes the place of where pin 6 was. I've tried that install and it still don't work. It's really pissing me off now as I don't like to be beaten by something that I know should work :(

It seems like it's working as I can only boot originals if I hold the reset down fro 1-3 secs like it says in the instructions and if I try to boot an original just by pressing reset normaly (under 0.6 sec) then it won't boot. As far as I know this is how it should be once the NEO2.2 has been installed.

What's pissing me off though is that it just won't boot PSX backups that I know work 'cause they work with my PSOne and they are on Verbatim Datasafe CDR's so that shouldn't be the problem. I thought that it may just be a case of the POT or white cog or laser screw needing to be adjusted but I've just about adusted them to death now and kinda getting fed up with it aswell.

In my oppinion it could be one of 3 things:

1 bad chip
2 Chip is ok but my PS2 just doesn't want to read CD backups
3 Wires connected to wrong places due to the amount of differant diagrams out there.

I'm sure it's not a bad chip as I've tried 3 upto now. First the V5 optimised code done by someone called Wire from his webite. The second one was the original NEO2.2 code and the third one was the original NEO code also just to make sure that the last one wasn't a bad chip or something. So that basically leaves reason 2 and 3, PS2 just doesn't want to read CD backups or wires connected in the wrong places.

I would really appriciate it if someone that has installed a NEO2.2 back in the day and had it working to give me some advice or anyone with somemore suggestions.

EDIT: I can now rule out reason 2 although that one was a long shot anyway as all PS2 should be able to read CD backups. I did a copy of my original AOE2. I then put the original in and when it got to the language menu I swaped it for the copy and it worked fine.

I'm gonna try this chip with the other diagrams now as I'm not sure if the other 2 chips were bad as I had the write I/O timing on 10 secs for the first 2 but on the 3rd chip I put it down to 4 sec and from what I've read this can be the differance between doing a good chip and doing a bad chip. I just wish that there wasn't so many differant diagrams. I mean for gods sake surely there's only one correct way so why all the others?

Thanks for the diagram funkie.

This is just mental. How can there be so many differant diagrams for the same chip and same motherboard?

So confusing:confused:
