Hi,
I have a 1.5 PSP and am worried about putting in original games incase they increase my firmware from 1.5 to something more backup unfriendly.
I know that playing some originals can upgrade your firmware, but are there any other things I should avoid or be aware of incase of Sony trying to sneakily update me?
Thanks

All updates on umd discs need to be manually started from the update icon that appears on the games menu.
You NO longer need for the mains adaptor to be connected so be aware that newer updates can install without mains power.
Oh and be careful when using wi-fi that you do not update by that method.
You normally need to accept terms and conditions for the update to take effect so you should have plenty of time to cancel.

I used a version changer to set my friends psp at 7.5 so that it would not be updated in the short term...

Sony cant legally force firmware updates, can they?
7.5?

I agree. It would be illegal to modify your firmware without you at least accepting it. It's not gonna happen.

Is that true ?? Never heard of that. To me, every flash access (write) needs your PSP to be plugged in. What if you run out of battery in the middle of an upgrade ?

Thanks.
Bit more reassuring then.
I've only just got in to this and have everything working nicely now.
I have just warned my other half not to allow it to update under any circumstances ever! :D
I'm still using a 512 card, think I'll get the 4 gig hard drive next for £120. I refuse to put anything near my unit that would upgrade it.
But I also suspect you are right, to force a firmware upgrade without my permission would more than likely be a breach of UK law and leave Sony in a position they wouldn't want to be in.
Thanks for the advice :)

Just to add to that, any upgrade up to 2.00 is safe. You can still downgrade afterwards. But if you upgrade to 2.01, 2.5 or 2.6... You're stuck.

If you do want to update to version 2.00 to play GTA, you can use the update supplied on the UMD. It is a safe update, I have used it myself and been able to downgrade again afterwoods. I havnt tried any other titles though.
If you dont trust a disc update, you can use a "firmware 2.00 dump" from a trusted source, ie.. psp-hacks.com

I would certainly appear so, on both counts.

And do WE have something to say ???
Not really. My PSPs running nice and smooth. But its nice to offer some kind advice here and there.
I think this topic is done anyway. Hopfully lalaland wont be having any tricky firmware problems.
Night night ;)
