View Full Version : Xbox 360 dev kit spotted with 1GB RAM
Pictures have emerged of an Xbox 360 dev kit with 1GB RAM instead of the usual 512MB. Apparently, the extra RAM in development boxes is to give devs more flexibility and power in development.

We received exclusive pictures of an Xbox 360 development kit with 1GB of RAM (as opposed to the 512MB found into retail consoles and dev kits until now). It was already rumoured/announced a while ago that new development kits would get 1GB of RAM to give developers more flexibility and use all the power of retail Xbox360s while still running debug tools. Today we offer you the first pictures of this 'new' device.
While most might expect the extra RAM would just be higher capacity chips on the motherboard, it's not. The extra 512MB comes in the new sidecar. The sidecar is the addon device for dev kits you've probably seen before used for dvd emulation and pix ports.
What you can see on the pictures below is just the 512MB-addon taken from inside the new devkit sidecar and modified/wired to be connected as standalone to a dev kit without the rest of the sidecar.

Was it ever a secret? XBOX dev kits had 2x the memory of retail units. People were soldering on the missing memory and loading Dev BIOSes for emulation (I guess they couldn't page large ROMs to the HDD).

did you even read the article?
360, not xbox.
and also noted in the article, the part where it says not like the usual 512mb as seen in both retail AND dev units.
this upgrade should allow devs to push the 360 a little closer to its limit :o and yes, i know this isnt for retail :P

Either the TV was a conflicting brand or more likely to hide his identity, of course with observant people like yourself it just didn't work lol
A lot of these insiders or second party employees working with MS are under close scrutiny for NDA enforcement.
People have been busted by their tattoo's, the products around the room and if i recall correctly a little girl peering through the window :D
On topic the ram expansion looks like crap, i hope the guy that received this simply removed the shroud seen here (http://www.xb360info.com/images/xbox360.devl.foto1.jpg)

Id love if they put this in retail as well but as its all about $$ and with a 360 price drop on the way soon it wont happen.

I was drawing comparisons to the original XBOX. Also, there are many DIFFERENT dev units. Ignorance of one doesn't mean "ohh, big secret!," but Idon't follow those so I was asking if this was ever really a secret. There was a huge GDDR3 shortage when the 360 came out in 2005 so I wouldn't doubt that they were 512MB then and updated in the intervening years, at least on some.

And how would you use it?! The 360 isn't hacked in the ways that would make this useful for most.

OOpps.. Sorry. After actually going and finding real info on this it is real. What Zeus forgets to add is that the guy took just the ram out of the devkit sidecar and wired it directly to the motherboard. But considering that all games are written to use the retail amount, there is no point in the slightest to doing this.

unfortunately i have the old xbox 360 without hdmi
and old dvd optical drive so i don't think new games will work on my 360
Sulla mia console sti giochi di certo non funzioneranno

Since debug builds are always bigger than retail versions because they
contain... wait for it... debug information! (symbol names, printfs/OutputDebugStringX), this necessitates the requirement for more ram to hold a build with all this extra information. Same with Sony's & Nintendo's devkits.
When the game runs adequately and is ready to ship, all that info is stripped for retail, and thus fits into less ram.
this upgrade should allow devs to push the 360 a little closer to its limit
Stupid **** like this makes me cringe.
