View Full Version : Team ICO: GTA IV simply didn't innovate

Speaking to a Swedish magazine, Team ICO has taken aim at GTA IV. An exec noted that the main problem with GTA IV is that it lacked innovation. The style of graphics is certainly impressive but ICO feels the base was just the same as all the other games in the series that have gone by.

And for course, there was Sam and Dan Houser’s masterpiece, GTA IV.

The biggest problem with the game is the lack of innovative things in the game. The graphic style impresses, but not the base premise, which is exactly the same as the predecessors.

Obviously not many care whether It's the same premise or not, GTAIV probably sold more copies than Than both team ICO's games put together.

Ain't that the damn truth. They took out planes, took out customization, cars with jacks, side missions like taxi etc, Tanks, and a lot of the better weapons from the previous gtas, and gave us multiplayer and a rather bland storyline full of half assed characters I don't care about. Give me the old crappy ps2 graphics again if I can at least ride a bike and jump over buildings with it like I used to...

**** gta 4

Team ICO wishes they had something like GTA on their hands, you don't have to reinvent GTA you just improve it every time, in the end people like GTA because its GTA. When GTA1 and GTA3 came out they innovated a lot more than Team ICO ever did, actually all Team ICO achieved is making a name for themselves for making weird games that every magazine loves but very few people actually buy and play and their games contribute absolutely nothing to the game industry. Its always funny to hear sony fanboys say we got Team ICO exclusively, too bad for sony and Team ICO sony fanboys rarely put their money where their mouth is.

Firstly I think they were aiming at the recent GTA release as opposed to the first ones, in which case I have to agree, GTA4 was crap compared to the others

and in term sof Team ICO's own games, I haven't played the games personally but I have watched my friends play it as well as watching videos of the gameplay and cinematics and heard the music in a ochestral concert a few yrs back. I would have to say they aimed at telling a cinematically breathtaking story in a game and were sucessful.

In terms of game sales, it doesn't say much about innovation, I mean Madden Football always sells well despite being the same game with minor changes every year.

As for the fanboys part (just in case everyone thinks I'm a fanboy...) I didn't even know Team ICO was making a Sony exclusive for the upcoming game and to be honest I would like it to be on both systems (even if its a timed exculsive) coz it looks like its one of those games where you truly sit and connect with the characters as opposed to blasting anything that moves which seems to be the popular theme

As a project GTA 4 was quite something but if you can find me one person who would rather play gta 4 rather than say an updated graphics engine on any of the previous versions, i will give you......1 cookie i suppose.

Cinematically breathtaking? I think GTA takes it in that regard. The story is engrossing, you end up caring about the characters, and it's full of Hollywood talent. Team ICO made some interesting games, but I found them quite boring. I had more fun playing games like Flashback. I found virtually no gameplay in either ICO or Shadow of the Colossus. In ICO, you run around and solve puzzles with some minimal action sequences. It's like playing something similar to Myst in 3rd person. Shadow of the Colossus wow'd me until I realized there was nothing but one thing to do. Put your sword in the air, ride your horse (one of the things that put me to sleep since it didn't seem to have any purpose), find the Colossus, climb it, stab a shiny thing until it dies, get sent back to the beginning. Then you do it again. They felt like unfinished games to me. Everyone's taste is different.
Oh yea, Team ICO is owned by Sony. So, anything they release will be a Sony exclusive.

Yes well The Hangover made 4 times as much money as There Will Be Blood. Does that make it a better movie? Of course not, there just happens to be more simpletons in the world.

Yup makes perfect sense to to put a quote from a PS3 developer talking about a game who'se lead platform was the PS3 in the 360 section.

I really don't understand this developers, if you don't like the game, don't play it, praise it if its good but STFU is you don't like it otherwise you sound as envious.

Liking There Will Be Blood makes you deep? I guess im shallow as a kiddie pool then, I love most anything with Daniel Day Lewis and his performance was fantastic, but TWBB was a huge disappointment especially considering Paul Thomas Andersons previous work. Upton Sinclair is probably spinning in his grave seeing a literary masterpiece (oil!) turned into a depressing version of The Treasure of Sierra Madre. Ironically the original story was satire, the movie dropped that part completely. The hangover at least made me laugh, what did you take out of TWBB? I left the theatre rather depressed, they forgot to add any redeemable qualities to anyone and as a result I felt no connection at all to the cast of unlikeable characters.

As for Ico and SoC, both were fine artsy games...unfortunately (well fortunately if you like artsy stuff..as once those go mainstream they usually loose the artistic part) that just doesn't resonate with the vast majority of gamers. Most gamers play games for the entertainment value, just as most movie goers see films for the entertainment value.

I have an acquaintance who pretty much refuses to watch any film that isn't an indy arthouse fick, will only watch anime if its in the original japanese (with fansubs since he doesn't speak or read a lick of japanese), thinks that pretty much every game but Okami sucks and generally leads a rather miserable life while thinking that this somehow makes him superior. On the whole I guess I'd rather be a "simpleton", at least I can be entertained and happy even at a popcorn flick. I'm looking forward to G I Joe for instance...I know it will be complete rubbish but I also know that for 2 hours I will have some fun and can leave my mind at the door.

For what its worth, I hate GTA, always have...its just not my thing, but Team ICO seems bitter more than anything else. They work hard on their artsy games but the vast majority either dont get it or just dont care, unfortunately I can only think of handful of games that maintained artistic integrity and reached a mass audience (God of War, Bioshock, etc) its a rare occurrence and happens more often than not by accident Team ICO should just keep doing what it does best and hope that one of their endeavors breaks out of the little elite mold they made for themselves, until then they shouldnt worry about it.

Why do you have to be a simpleton to enjoy a comedy more than a drama? Isn't that just personal taste in entertainment? When I go out to the theater, I usually go with friends. I'm usually in the mood to be entertained, laugh, etc. For movies like There Will Be Blood, I enjoy them more in my home.

That is why GTA:SA is the most complete GTA game ever made.

Amazing game, huge world, 200 players max multiplayer with DEDICATED SERVERS!, not the measly 16 players in GTA4 where you have to wait hours to fill up all 16 slots, so people mostly start the game with under 8 players.

San Andreas with 200 players on a completely open map with plane fight, tank fights, boat races, car races, GO KART RACES!, Triathlon races, Base ASSAULTS, LANDGRABE modes where you buy property to gain money!

I mean the online in San andreas is in a league of its own!

AIRPLANE races too! Offroad races through the forests, custom car shops... i mean there is so much depth to the multiplayer ... 200 PEOPLE!

Thats right. Thats why there are a lot of Toyotas on the road rather than Ferraris. There are too many poor people.

There will be blood is one damn boring movie. Haven't seen a AAA movie in a while.
