View Full Version : Spong Talk Xbox 360 Mod Chips...

Spong rather shakily report that they have heard rumours of successes in China of an Xbox 360 modchip. Remember this is Spong, if we at MaxConsole told you all that we 'heard' then the site would be flooded all day long :).

Anyway, politics aside for a moment, some less than pleasant news has been filtering through to us over the past few weeks, as various message boards claim to have ripped and dumped Xbox 360 game code directly from retail discs. One group – seemingly the driving force behind undoing Xbox 360 copy protection – know as Team PI Coder, has to date released almost the entire 360 catalog and made available an extractor tool with which other users are encouraged to do likewise.

Right now, the rips are useless. When mastered to a DVD-R, the Xbox finds them unreadable. For now. You see, at this very moment, while you are reading this news piece, workshops the length and breadth of China, and other places, are working tirelessly towards a single goal – and that goal is to release a mod-chip for Microsoft's machine that will force the console to accept ripped game software.

From what we have been able to gather, the first mod-chips for the 360 will be available within a month. Speaking to us under terms of anonymity, one source close to the research and development of some well known current-generation chips said, “We've been seeing partial success from some corners [in China] though nothing that could go on sale yet.” This paints a dark picture of the console industry and the aggressive blight it suffers. “Everyone is working on a full-functioning 'do everything' chip that will take apart the 360 and let users do what they will, though we expect a first-generation bypass device that will allow back-ups within weeks. The first on the market is likely to be complex and might not be particularly good, though that's just a stopgap before real chips become available.”

There is some hope for Microsoft however, “Everyone is finding it difficult [to make the chips work correctly] as Microsoft's security is the best we've seen to date for a disc-system. It it weren't for the fact that DVD is used, it's likely that further development wouldn't have been worth anyone's time.”

Reacting to the escalation of IP aggression against its machine, Microsoft released a statement over the weekend reading, “We have made improvements on both the hardware and software side to protect Xbox 360 against piracy and modding. With Xbox 360, we had the benefit of learning from our experiences on Xbox. This allowed us to identify points of weakness that were exploited by hackers in the first generation and to eliminate those vulnerabilities in Xbox 360.”

So will the Xbox 360 escape its pursuers? Right now, it seems unlikely, and as huge resources are poured into cracking the new box, it seems a matter of when rather than if. The 360 does have its online functionality to further protect the retail unit as was released and Microsoft representatives have stated to SPOnG on several occasions that it believes it can second guess the areas it might see targeted and is proactively preparing updates.

We'll keep you updated.

LOL i think microsoft underestimates these hackers. If this news is true than microsofts statement of it would take hackers a long time to make a chip were just gibberish coming out of there mouth

How reliable is Spong? They are not! But if this is true, it will be a painfull hit from the hackers to microsoft.

Microsoft knew Xecuter would do their best hacking the system, I am curious which team will come with the first Modchip.

Enigmah360??

:p

We'll see the first modchip arrive someday, but if it's only a month? I really doubt it!

Judging from the "17 mistakes of microsoft" thing, I seriously doubt MS has learned anything from Xbox, and even if they did, the implementation is going to to be so wrong that it doesn't matter.

Besides, given what people have learned about the 360 so far, the hardware doesn't even seem to be that far removed from the Xbox.

Even the GC was hacked, and hacked years ago. The only reason that it took so long before commerical mods came out was a general lack of interest. Now considering how many hard core hackers around the world (many with substantial resources at their disposal) are working on this (and have been since litterly just hours after release), it's not unreasonable to expect that it will be hacked, and done so rather quickly. I'd be more shocked if it wasn't.

Must admit

About 1 month after launch ... ouch.

I must say that the first thing people did when they had an 360 is OPEN IT
so.. this will move on fast.

I thought therewould be a modchip for the PSP first but as a former user said
lack of interest, delays this..

all I can say is HAPPY hacking ...
Fceux360 :-) can't wait ... beats paying MSpoints (which is brilliant too :-)

good news if it is indeed true.

At £50 (87 US$) a game here in the UK I'm waiting until the 360 is chippable before I'm even considering buying one.

Smells a lot like bullshit. This spong better come up with some proof.

"Smells a lot like bullshit. This spong better come up with some proof."

Does it really matter what the heck you think? Whether or not they provide data proof for this? Why they would release this before Christmas? Honestly, you're getting other people to do work for you, shut up and take it. God, I hate when people demand stuff of developer of mods, when they can't even place a peanut on a log. Whatever the case is I agree with Artlover, Microsoft hasn't learnt anything. They are so juvenille right now when it comes to protection.

Well. There are a ton of people every week claiming they have hacked the Xbox 360. I will believe it when i see it. So far I've yet to see any info whatsoever of anyone even getting remotely close to hacking anything in the Xbox 360.

You are going to have to wait for a very long time then. The 360 uses an RSA encryption and will never be cracked. Well not exactly true but the time it takes to brute force RSA is about equal to the time it will take for the unviverse to collapse. So the only hope of signing code is for the signing key to be leaked, which is pretty unlikely. The signing code (private key) is not stored anywhere in the 360 because the key to decrypt (public key) is different then the signing key, and the signing key is never needed by the xbox itself.

Don't make stress... A lot of crews are working on it and when guys, which are amateurs, found security holes then the professionals will do it too.

Remember, the rsa encryption doesn't protect the xbox 1 against a mod and a lot of security cost a lot of money for microsoft. That means, the security is good but no high cost security, which are to expensive for a 399€ game console. The profit that companys in asia can earn with a mod is to high and when i see the progress after a few weeks... I believe the first prototype mod comes out in the next three months, let's talk in april again and then we see what possible and whats not.

The interest is too high in this for someone NOT to make a chip.

Give it time for christ sakes, there are only handful of games and rest assured down the road there will be some other form of protection (which I am sure it will also be combated as well, look at GT4 for PS2). What's to say Microsoft won't make some update you need to connect to Xbox live to play certain games (ie. Sony's Firmware on thier PSPs).

Microsoft said the protection is going to be something that we haven't seen before. They also stated that anything is possible and it can possibly be cracked. So there ya have it folks. Let the reverse engineers do thier thang and sit back and be patient.

Godsminion I agree with your comment against Radiozo. We all need to just wait ... and see.
