View Full Version : Hackers release application which leaves out new protection in v4.0
Wanikoko has released a new homebrew hack for the Wii that will essentially download and install all the new features in the official v4.0 Wii system menu update BUT leaves out the new protection which has been added by Nintendo. Full details are available at <a href="http://www.teknoconsolas.es/blog/waninkoko/firmware-updater-40" target="_blank">Teknoconsolas.es</a>.

bung it in apps in a folder called what you want..rename the dol to boot.dol then launch via brew channel may take a while to do depending on your connection speed...

Depends. I think we need to wait to see if the preloader/starfall patch offsets have changed in sysmenu 4.0. Gotta assume that they have.
I would expect his tool will blow away starfall/preloader, but you could re-install it. The issue is having the right data in hacks.ini.
Morden.
For a "what will delete what on my WII" list, see Here (http://forums.maxconsole.net/showpost.php?p=1126131&postcount=16). Note that this is both an IOS and System Menu update.

whats the new protection ???
I am going to leave this for now until new english reports come in.
I installed it before and its working fine. Everything so far works except the TWL hack but it doesnt matter if you you already have the HMC installed already. i updated the IOS to the cIOS36 rev8 after it completed. Its great as you get everything 4.0 has but without the other fixes Nintendo did. Its worth it in the long run. Think of it as custom M33 fw that PSP's have.

does anyone have the d2pro9 and have installed this without any problems
anyone with starfall and patchmii tried this yet?
not tried patchmii but starfall boots no problem, yet wont work due to 3.2 fw needed, etc.

Just installed after removing starfall. seems fine, however world of goo wad installed game wont run of SD but wad still install onto NAND.
report:
1. wiikey v1 does work
2. wads still work
3. starfall does NOT work (tried reinstalling)
4. madworld wont boot without gecko
5. VC games work from SD but wiiware (world of goo) does not, both with wads and games from shop channel.
6. IOS249 (unofficial) with gecko works
So basically the only reason to install this is for SD VC games and SDHC.
The first one is worth the loss of Starfall IMO for me.

Thought unofficial VC wads not downloaded from the shop channel would boot somehow from the SD using waninkoko's 4.0 installer. Its only official downloaded VC's from shop that work. Yeah, i miss SF too..i liked the hack to remove the health warning,etc..

Just found out why it worked, I actually copied and not moved the data so the data was still on the wii when I launched from SD.
I am sure a "fix" will come out.
Basically until this "fix" comes out it may not be worth updating unless you have a few legit VC games.
Or can someone else give a reason to keep 4.0 or should I downgrade to 3.2?

I am sure someone will figure out how to patch an IOS to allow 3.2U to run the 32GB cards.... hopefully..

No chip here and everything updated just fine. Went from 3.3U to 4.0U. B/U loader and HBC for the Wad installer work just fine. And that's all I really need as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for the hard work guys!

HMC? should it be HBC?
I am running 3.2u now with a chip.
Is it even worth trying this? 3.2u seems to be the sweet spot for firmwares.
I guess v4 would give 32gig support and you can run VC/wii ware from the sd card?

This is the most pointless update ever.
3.2 with CIOS36v8 is just fine. With all features enabled. Until games stop working why fix something that isn't broken? So you can have wiiware/vc on a sd card? load a 32GB SD card? wow.. big deal.
4.0 can't:
Copy twilight hack from SD card
Install DVDx (but can run it)
Install HBC (but it can run it)
Save files that have copy protection, that were copied to the SD card through any previously patched system menus, will NOT copy back
It will not allow you to use preloader, Starfall, cIOSCORP, or the various softmod packages available
With 3.2 just extract whatever future IOS wads you need from new games (like madworld ios38, 53, 55) and install them with wad manager. No system menu updates required.

I installed the 4.0 update via the installer and it installed fine. It took about 20 minutes via wifi so be patient. The hbc still works and I can install wads from the sd card and you can use the sd manager to move them back *but* you can not play them from the sd card afterwards. Be forewarned. When I inserted Mario Tennis, it wanted to install a system update still. I did not let it. Any ideas why it would do that if I'm already at 4.0 and if everything will still work afterwards?
i personally will not be updating to v4 at the moment as its still at an early stage where it cannot run starfall, hbc etc but i think its rather unfair to say that this is pointless update as it is the next stage to the next stage of getting somewhere i.e starfall, hbc at the moment people want 32gc because of vc/wiiware so i think a big thank you should go out to the hackers who do these hacks/programs , they must work very hard and put a lot of effort into this scene so from my point of view please do not make statements like pointless and be harsh with these guys , without them most of us would be stuffed on here, just because its not for you dosent mean to say its not good for other people.
p.s.s sorry for going on one but i feelk like it had to be said , cheers

It seems to be hit or miss, mine works and I had no problems (upgrading from 3.2E UK).
So is it possible to downgrade from this back to good old 3.2?
edit:
I just downgraded back to 3.2 using this: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=143120
Starfall works fine and there are no problems. I dont plan on upgrading back to this until someone allows for games installed from wads to run from SD or let madworld run from the disc channel rather than gecko.
but still, the hack is good work from the hackers and I am glad they are in the scene and give us the ability t downgrade as well (also thank you nintendo for such crappy security and flexible OS).

Devestated, everything was working ok, it was just installing everything as it should, then failed near the end. Bricked.
Don't suppose anyone knows how to fix this?
Black screen, no video output. On/off works ok, eject etc.. green light, nothing else.
Tried GC pad ( u,d,l,r) port 4, still black screen.
(i'm using a component cable. Would this show me the error screen? )

this is all I can find:

Also you sure you did it right? After all, sometimes starfall is a pain to accept A+1:

IF you do get it fixed, I would recommend waiting until Bootmii is released before trying something like this again.

I think your problem here is that you have to have at least 250 free blocks of memory. Free some up and try it again.

Then I am afraid, you may have a true brick if Savemii does not work. your only option may be to either wait for a wii brick recovery solution (like the PSP pandora) or to send the console of to nintendo for repair.

i was looking on the spanish forums where this was posted. Some addons seem to be the cause of these bricks.
List every addon/ios/hack you had before it bricked.

Nothing out of the ordinary, hbc, I had updated the store etc previously using waninoko's stuff with no issues. I had wad manager, wii earth, mplayer, dvdx but had not installed starfall. CISO was on there as well. Really annoying as it got all the way through updating successfully asked for for any button to restart and then bricked!
Do NOT update yet. Wait until the kinks are ironed out, most people are fine but it is not worth the risk. I am hoping that Bootmii will save the day but I fully expect to be disappointed.

Well I updated from 3.2E, I disabled starfall first and then updated, I also had ios 249 installed so that isnt a problem.
I currently think that its either some CIOS (there are multiple versions available and rev (were you on rev 8?)). Or there is no checksum on the downloads so corrupt updates are being installed.
Guess I was lucky though.
