Microsoft has announced a new dev kit for the Xbox 360 as well as new tools and a competition aimed at independent game creators. Interestingly, the new dev kit sports a sexy blue look and comes complete with additional debugging memory.

Taking advantage of the Game Developers Conference, Microsoft has announced a new dev kit for the Xbox 360, as well as new tools and a competition aimed at hobbyist and independent game makers.

The new dev kit, which comes in the sexy blue seen in the pictures, comes with additional debugging memory. This comes hot on the heels of Sony's announcement of its own new dev kit.

Microsoft also stated that it will release new updates to its free XNA tools. Microsoft explains the new features as follows: "Community Games developers will be able to include customized Avatars, which have quickly become one of the most popular features on Xbox LIVE, and professional Xbox LIVE Arcade developers will be able to release game add-ons like episodic content and include LIVE Party functionality making playing games a social experience by letting gamers seamlessly play and chat with their friends online."

No hard date was given for the updates. Microsoft said that they will be available this Spring.

wow zeus. how much d!ck are you going to suck out of M$. seriously, now the 360 fad you are trying to put out is "sexy"??? PS3 & Wii custom colors look way better than any color i have seen for 360. Well at least the red 360 is a "perfect match" if you know what i mean.:D I still prefer white 360. anyways i am sure this "dev kit" is about the sexy 360 "blu-ray";););)

Shame it's only a Dev kit, I'd buy one if they released one looking that good, better than the beige thing they got going.

Is it just a different color or are the internals redesigned?

Anybody can make the 360 any color they want with a voided warranty and $5 of spray paint! :D

are these two news items unrelated or are the new dev kits aimed at XNA developers?

damn thats the prettiest dev kit i've ever seen. Sure beats the heck out of the xbox dev kit and the plain ol boring PS2 dev station I have (the ps2 part itself looks identical to a retail one just a different firmware). I love that chrome blue, wish they actually had that as an option i might even concider upgrading my trusty ol 66%'er. :)

Nah I doubt it, if you remember Sony's Dev Kit costs $2000, so I doubt M$ would charge 5times that. It probably has the Jasper kit inside too so that should help it's reliability.

Also the news on the news tools for XNA is unrelated to the Dev Kit, it's just the wording makes it seem the XNA tools are part of the Dev Kit, I had to read it a few times before it made sense to me.

Should be the same. I think it just has extra memory for testing.

lol, do they think they are going to get more developers because they have added new colors to the dev kits or something? :p

..include customized Avatars, which have quickly become one of the most popular features on Xbox LIVE..
Gee, one of the "most popular features on xbox live" happens to be... mandatory, right along with the NXE update. What kind of a hillbilly came up with this statement... I mean "look ma, the road must be pretty popular because everyone who travels down it uses it!"

If I had a bloody choice I would not have wasted xxMiB on the avatar creation and content packs, nor would I be looking at a gay ass mii (or it's feminine silhouette if you manage to get around creating one) on my start screen. Popular
