MaxConsole reader Chuck got a message back from the MS customer support team and was surprised to see that they adopted the 'red ring of death' term which was not coined by MS. Check out the rest of the e-mail below...

Hi,

I love your site and read news there daily. I wanted to pass along something funny that happened to me. If you feel it is “post worthy”, feel free to do so. The backstory is that I got an RROD on my Elite, and emailed MS support to get a repair set up. Below is the text of the email they sent me. I highlighted the funny part. It seems that MS has adopted terminology that was created by the end users.

Hello Charles,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft online support for XBOX. I am Melissa and I will be helping you today with this issue.

As I understand it, your Xbox 360 Elite console is getting the red ring of death and could not process a online repair since it says serial number is already registered.

Please accept our apologies for any inconveniences you have felt regarding this unfortunate matter.

In order to isolate what is causing the problem and to give you the correct steps to resolve the issue, please provide us with more specific details.

. The exact error message or error code that you are encountering.
. If/Since the Ring of Light is flashing red, how many quadrants are doing this?
. Does the problem occur only on specific games? What are these games?
. Does this happen on online or offline games?
. What is the color of the power supply's indicator light?
. Please include other details that can help identify the issue.

We look forward to hearing from you again and helping you resolve your problem.

lol just cause one tech support said red ring of death doesn't mean Microsoft adapted the term. Why is this even news?

But isn't she speaking for Microsoft?

I find it quite funny, it's become so popular - everyone knows the term.

Seems like the Microsoft rep was just repeating what the customer had said in his letter. Otherwise, she wouldn't have to include the generic troubleshooting questions like - How many quadrants are lit up?

Zeus this is normal. When i emailed to tell Microsoft of their shi**y quality razer habu they quoted me word for word. A microsoft mail is often pre-written for speed with answers picked from a database.

i find it funny how they ask does it happen when your online or if a sertain game is played.

LOL we all know the R.O.D is a fault with MS's poorly designed system, its a hardware failure, and think no matter how long youve had they system MS should fix it free.

Actually, in my initial email to them, I just said that I had 3 red lights flashing around the power button. However, I did go on to explain that I had hoped to never see a RROD (abbrevation used) since I paid the extra to buy an elite. I just thought that it was hilarious that she used the RROD term.

the support company is not Microsoft. they are just hired by Microsoft. Get banned or ask to get escalated and they will even tell you.. they will send your problem to a Microsoft tech.

Who knows where this company is but its for sure low paid phone reps with little to no understanding of the xbox. They just answer predefined questions and read the answers to you.

XBOX360 and RROD goes hand in hand the next thing the tech support need to adopt is the e74 error:D

Most of the time 3rd party companies are the ones that give costumer service, therefore as other said just because one operator used the same term as the person with the problem doesn't mean MS is accepting the term, the real term should be general hardware error.

Pretty stupid "news". But what could I expect from zeus

I got suspended from live a day before the first ban hammer hit. because i gave them a fake phone number. I asked the rep why microsoft needed my phone number and it took like 30 mins before he admitted they arent microsoft and had to submit my suspension to microsoft for review and a microsoft rep would get back to me in 72 hours.

Long story short... if you have to call customer support for any reason at all.. in the first 5 mins you need to say "escalate my call or let me speak to a supervisor". If not you will get pre set questions like "is your video cable plugged in?".

Customer support is a joke and im not surprised at all they said red ring of death. Its funny they said it... but its funnier to hear what they say when you actually call them. Even when you get the generic extremely happy automated message. That should be a hint your about to get clowned.

Both sony and microsoft have crap for customer support but microsofts is just plain silly. If you dont have a modded 360, 5 mins of dealing with customer support will make you wanna mod it just for spite.

I didn't have a 360 at all before I decided basically just that, after my experience with PS2 and their crap warranty runaround (which was what actually got me interested in modding and console repair) I just plan ahead to have to fix my own stuff these days.

this is the same thing that happend to me but i got my way :)

i got a HDMI unit that was RROD and brand new still under 3 years. i went online and filled out all the stuff a day later i got a email telling me it was cancel out of there system. I CALLED 1-800-4MY-XBOX i tell them i got the 3 red lights and i went online and filled out all the stuff and now i get a email telling me that its canceled. she goes hmmm thats odd. i tell here all the info again that i filled out already online she then goes threw the same crap that is listen above about what game i was playing and what color is the light n the psu and this and that did u test the unit with another power supply.
i'm like i have 2 xbox 360 and i have tested this unit with both of those psu and av cables and guess what it does not work.
after a bit she wants me to send the unit. she wants me to print out the shipping stuff and get a box. i'm like i dont have any of that. she then ask can i provide it. i tell them NO. she goes ok we will send u out a PRE PAID BOX with in the next week. DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR FACEPLATE. PLEASE WRITE ON A PAPER YOUR REF NUMBER I GIVE U NOW AND INCLUDE IT WITH YOUR BOX. she told me i can check my status online i went to the pc and checked guess what the xbox was under repair again just like the other day.

4 days come by and ups rings my bell i get the PRE PAID BOX
open it throw the RROD HDMI UNIT in the box with the REF # seal it walk next door to UPS DROP OFF ship it out
* i say next door because the place is like 1 min walking

1 day later xbox.com has my unit marked as coming back to them
2 days later still in IN TRANSIT
3 days later they have recived the 360 looking it over
4 days later M$ says the box is going to be shipped out to me REPAIRED
latter that day i get a tracking back from M$

total 8 days so far

i track the package and it comes back to me in 3 days

total 11 days 4 days to get the box , 4 days to send it back , 3 days to get it back.

M$ only had my unit for 1 day in hand = they did not fix that unit they gave me a refub or a new unit.
i opened this new unit it was a liteon and the date stamped on the bottom of the box was jan 09 - all is good for now.

the lesson is to call them because they online thing is messed up after they did the update on there server. i never had any problems before that gettings RROD units sent out and droped off and back again new or refubs just this one time.

oh and guess what now all my content from my old unit will not work i have to call them now to get my content to my new box how gay is that.
^^ M$ you are do GAY ^^
