A new report by NPD has indicated that consoles now account for a QUARTER of ALL online playtime, while the Xbox 360 is gaining half of all online console play. This revelation comes as it has been revealed that PC gaming has declined although still convincingly remains the largest online gaming platform.

Online console gaming now accounts for a quarter of all online playtime, according to a new report from North American stats body NPD – and the Xbox 360 is grabbing the biggest piece of the console pie.

The report, entitled Online Gaming 2009, shows that 25 per cent of all online gaming now happens on consoles – up from 19 per cent in 2008. Online PC gaming, has declined, however, though it remains the largest online games platform.

Wrong! Read the article:

"Xbox 360 accounts for 50 per cent of online console play, whilst online Wii usage has soared – Nintendo’s machine now accounts for 29 per cent of console gaming, up from 18 per cent the year before."

Xbl - 50%
Psn - 21%
Wii - 29%

And that PSN percentage might even be lower due to the fact they include last gen consoles too. They mention PS2 at the bottom. That or last gen accounts for less than 1%.

Do they not count handheld consoles? Shirley, the DS and PSP account for more then 1%.

Well, I'm not sure, they don't mention that in the article. If so, that lowers the PSN numbers even further. The only static info they give in the article are Xbox - 50% and Wii - 29%

The article is horrible. It not only fails to mention the PS3's slice of the pie, it specifically mentions that the PS2 is measured (its % has gone down). So there are at least four consoles measured.

It also said that Xbox360 is 50% of online console gaming, and then it said that online Wii usage has soared, and the wii now accounts for 29% of console gaming. Maybe it was a simple omission of the word "online" or maybe they were citing a literal NPD fact and placing it wrong. It's ambiguous.
Nice job there, gaming journalism.

It's also unclear--I wonder if "PC gaming has declined" was this gaming rag journalist's own words? Or NPD's? Because saying that console gaming has risen from 19% of all online gaming to 25% of all online gaming--that doesn't necessarily mean PC online gaming has declined. It just means that PC online gaming is not exceeding console online gaming's rate of growth.

I played Crimson Skies recently. They was only a couple other people playing, but it worked. I was using a 360 and don't know if that makes a difference, server wise.

Hmm..
Lets use rocket science to figure this one out..
Not including Nintendo's excuse for online...

There are 2 major online consoles. Xbox and ps3..
So wouldnt they each make up 50%??
DUH??

Ah, more people game online on Wii then PS3. All 3 consoles online are pretty lame when comparing to PC gaming. Mods, custom maps, dedicated servers, and matches over 32 players are still pretty rare on consoles.
