View Full Version : Microsoft skimping on RRoD return boxes, or are they?
An Xbox 360 owner is putting out that Microsoft refused to send him a shipping box for his dead Xbox 360 console. The customer service rep told him that he had to find his own box, but MS has responded to one site saying they do send out boxes so this was perhaps just customer service at its very worst.
A Consumerist reader complained that after his Xbox red-ringed – again – he called Microsoft to get a shipping box to mail his console in for repairs. But the customer service rep told him he'd need to find his own box. As he pointed out, this gives them a possible out. Who's to stop them from claiming the box was damaged in the mail?
My Xbox red-ringed for the second time this weekend. Which is almost a relief after hearing how bad my disc drive was sounding, but not so much after hearing the new policy. I was told that Xbox no longer ships out a box to you and you must find a box to ship it out in. Yeah I guess its not a big deal, but I think it gives them another thing to hold over your head; "We are sorry, Sir, but you didn't back it well enough and it appears the damage was due to shipping, we cannot help you."

They just sent my RROD supposedly fixed system back to me. No, they're no longer offering boxes. You have to get your own, and print the label through the website. I also had a warranty, and it just seems that this is the way the process is now. We can stop buying their products or keep putting up with it...

Why should I have to jump through extra hoops because their product keeps breaking? If you had a notebook and it broke and it was under warranty, would you not expect HP/DELL/TOSHIBA to send you a pickup & return box?

I can also confirm that they recently stopped sending boxes.
I live in Canada and one of my 360's died 3 weeks ago. They emailed out a printable UPS label and I had to supply my own box.
What WAS really nice is that I sent it back on a Friday and Purolator was at my door on TUESDAY with my replacement.

appearantly no one remembers like a year and a half ago when m$ stopped sending boxes?
m$ said that they will return your 360 in the package you sent it in after they stopped sending out boxes.. because of this there was a guy who wanted to organize a seacan to travel around USA to pickup peoples red ringed 360s to catch m$ with a big bill. not sure if it ever happened but if it did, according to m$, theyd have to ship it out in the seacan it arrived in.
again, this was ages ago. i dont know why theres a bunch of idiots out there who think that m$ was still sending out boxes.

they actually were you damn troll (why aren't you banned is beyond me). I actually sent mine in around september of 08 and i actually received the box and had to drive myself to the ups store. I didn't get it back until AFTER Thanksgiving but for me the service was pretty good it seems since it hasn't broken down yet. Then again, i wasn't the original owner. It was a hand-me down gift.

I'm with you on this one.
I contacted MS this afternoon because my 360 keeps giving me DREs and telling me to put my games in a 360. It's out of warranty so I expected to be charged for a repair.. they want £90+ lol. I could get a brand new jasper and not have to worry about it dying for practically the same price.
I even spoke to a supervisor, as you do, who said he could get the repair down to.... £78! So they expect me to pay at least £78 for them to fix their crappy Hitachi drive. Oh, they also said they would replace any scratched discs, as long as they're MS published of course, and for a fee of £10 per disc.
Crappy support.
Shoddy hardware.
Good games.
Time to flash me thinks.
EDIT: richbambam: It's not the box, it's the lack of service.

i had a box do this, since it's out of warranty, just purchase a new 'same model' drive that's in your box now from ebay. i paid $30 for a new drive, swapped the controller boards (from old drive to new) put in the new drive (with old controller board) and back in business, no flashing or anything.

It just isn't a huge deal. Would you rather wait a week to receive a stupid box, or spend the $2.00 and get your system back sooner? I'd rather spend the $2.00.

I would if I dared do it, would you say it's quite straight-forward? I've never opened any of my consoles before :p The closest I've got to "modding" is the boot-disc for the DC, lol.
EDIT: Sorry to hijack the thread but does anybody else have experience with the Hitachi DVD drive? I've heard there's a fault with the magnet in the Hitachi drive that produces these errors, any advice on how to fix this thing would be appreciated.
EDIT 2: On topic: MS never have sent a box to people in the UK. They even ask you to print the label yourself and sound astonished when you tell them you don't have a printer.

I've heard many reports of just getting return labels... maybe MS is facing a cardboard box crisis. Good PR can probably spin this around.

my brother got a box two weeks ago (USA) and a friend of mine got a box last week (Canada), and i was pretty sure that the only time they stopped shipping boxes was when they actually ran out of boxes a month or so after they announced the warranty extension. at that time, they started to offer shipping labels as an option, since they were temporarily out of boxes.
as far as i know, they never offered boxes in europe.

Here they never send a box.. so if you find the USPS Priority mail box.. is perfect. I always use that one, the xbox 360 will fit and is a flat rate!!!!

it's not that difficult and pretty straight forward. there are many tutorials on the net on how to do most things such as removing the 360 case, drives and so on. but i'm pretty sure it's something that most people can accomplish.

The box is no big deal, you can moan about it but if you can't get hold of a box to put the 360 in, then you must live in the middle of nowhere.
However, printing the label is a big deal, not everyone will have the internet or a printer, so not everyone can do that.
Also if you cal up and the eror is not 3 red lights, and your console is under 2 years old, the don't take any of their crap about having to pay after one year. If i recall in the eu it is 2years now, tho most companies rely on people not knowing that.

it was a one of akind of box. It contained this green foam that was perfect for the 360. As a 360 owner the tears i shed while getting my 360 confy inside that box is the best feeling ever:rolleyes:
LOL...c'mon people. I find it hilarious that M$ spent around 40 Million USD on just these boxes. LOL, that's already 24% of the users (not including those that shipped more than 2x, 3x, 4x...etc) that were affected by RROD. M$...shame on you. Just stop destroying the gaming industry. i also find it funny how ixtreme fw truly improves read rate & noise level. M$ is a disgrace.

I have returned my console twice to MS and neither time I got a box (in the UK BTW), the first time I keep the box they sent it back in just in case.
It was needed so I've keep the second box as well :p.
The only thing they do so is not to send it back in the retail box so it can't be identified. This is useless cause both times the courier came and said "I'm here to pick up an Xbox".
