Saturday night was probably a pretty standard night for most of us, but not for Bungie who reached a great milestone with Halo 3. On Saturday night they played host to Halo 3's one billionth match, now you got to admit that's a whole lot of matches.

Saturday night, while many of us were stuffing food into our faces, plenty of folks were still playing Halo 3. At precisely 6:36pm PST, in a three minute and nineteen second game of Infection on Foundry, four players participated in Halo 3's one billionth match.

One Billion. It's a giant number, one that's difficult to understand without the proper context. Our first thought was to put it into perspective by comparing Halo 3's total games played with its predecessor, Halo 2, a title that we are still super proud of, and one that's topped the original Xbox LIVE Leaderboards since its launch through to present day - over four years of online gaming.

if there was a way to find out a total number of matches in a proper game (eg. quake 3) then halo's billion wouldn't be that impressive anymore

Couldn't have said it better. I'm pretty sure there are other games that had a billion matches by now. Nothing but PR talk for the next Halo installment/add-on.

FYI: only fanboys are the first ones to call someone else the same. That's why I never do it. It's stupid and childish.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but what do you mean by "proper"? Halo can't be considered a "proper" game just because it's not a FPS on the PC? Yes, I do give you the point that Quake 3 or any other game franchise that has been around far longer than the Halo franchise would have more matches. (Duh)

If Quake 3 was so "proper" the developers would have already put a way to keep track of this stuff.

Sorry, I'm not even a halo fanboy or anything like that. I don't even own the game and spent maybe an hour total on it in my lifetime. FPS shooters just don't interest me. It's just that the snobbery of this post set me off somehow. Like I said, I might be reading too much into this.

I can't really see what's the big deal with Halo 3. I mean it's an alright game but I honestly feel it's a bit overrated. I haven't played the single player game but the multiplayer part of it is overrated.

Quake 3 =/= a console game. THAT is the difference.

No matter which way you try to bend it, this is impressive on any standard for console gaming. Nuff said.

You are correct on that, and the multiplayer is the best part of it.

The single player is abysmal.
