That's actually impressive considering how the Japanese market has always been with non-Japanese products.
This is proof of how software sells consoles.
Take note Sony, and secure your games.... MS is very smart and knows the way to a gamers wallet..

At what price ? How big was that bag with cash that microsoft dragged in ? And how many games does microsoft need to sell to get a profit from that "investment" ?
There's no point in securing 3rd party exclusives if it doesn't make profits.

Really? I did not know that. I would have thought they would have used something local, like the Kenwood mp3 players.

Just like they've never bought the 360. I'm sure Nike and Levi's are the top brands in Japan if the tags don't say "Made in Japan."

Wrong.
The more appealing exclusives a system has the more consoles it might sell and from there the more peripherals/games/services it could sell.

Well how successful do you think you'll be if you try to sell a Christian Bible to a group of Muslims? What happens everytime the 360 gets a new jrpg released? the console sells well right? What is it that makes the japanese overcome their xenophobia and buy a non-japanese product?..... maybe, just maybe, when they take into account the japanese when they make said product.
Really? No Profit from this...
Has anyone noticed how many developers that were once Japanese only are jumping ship on the American Bandwagon? Though the fanboys may not like it, Company's Like Capcom, From Software, Konami, and the Mighty Square-Enix that were once exclusive developers and Sony fanboys themselves have all saw the light.
There is no more loyalty in this economy when money, and lots of it, can be made here in the west. This country holds more sales of video games than any country in the world.
Not to mention that there are more Xboxes sold than PS3's and that western gamers still love their gore and RPG type games.
I think not that Microsoft is still throwing money at these company's for exclusive rights... these company's now know the value of the west and that their company's would thrive making games for the console with the largest install base.
Just smart business.
The tides have turned and we will see more of this as Microsoft is for the Gamer and themselves. They know what captures gamers.... GAMES... don't hate on them for their intelligence..

I agree sonk.
The other thing to consider is that even though it might not be making profit, it is getting Microsoft's foot in the Japanese market "door". You gotta start somewhere, and this is a great start. If Microsoft can keep up the exclusives that the Japanese eat up faster than an obese man can snarf a Big Mac, then they can truly compete in a new crowd.

You forgot the important part: 360 owners buy more games.

Hm, I think an average PS3 owner buys as much games as an average 360 owner. There are more hardcore gamers in the xbox360-camp, but they don't buy much Japanese RPG games, mostly FPS games.

As of this month 360 is over 8 games per console, and PS3 is over 7, so PS3 is catching up lately.
I own a 360 and have 14 games and only one is a FPS, but I play most FPSs on PC. My brother has PS3 and has no FPSs or RPGs.
