Sony says Xbox 360 lacks longevity but MS does not care

Kaz Hirai of Sony recently branded the Xbox 360 as a console with a distinct lack of longevity and indicated the PS3 would eventually pull ahead. However, MS seems more than capable of defending themselves as they accused Sony of being more too focused on specs, comfortable and complacent.


"Rhetoric is the art of ruling the minds of men," according to some old dead Greek guy who took a fatal swig of hemlock. The latest attempt to massage our brainwaves with persuasive oratory comes from Sony Chairman Kazuo Hirai, who reportedly told CVG the Xbox 360 "lacks longevity" and that the PlayStation 3 will eventually pull ahead.

Not to be outdone, Microsoft Director of Product Management Aaron Greenberg responded in kind to The BitBag, accusing Sony of being too "comfortable," "complacent," and focused on "hardware specs."

But Greenberg goes one further, really laying it down:

With a U.S. install base lead now of more than 7 million units (according to NPD), I can’t imagine any scenario where the PS3 can catch up with us. In fact, even if you doubled the current PS3 sales and Xbox 360 remained flat, they couldn’t close the gap until 2014.

Good multiplayer game play gives games longevity. So xbox has no issues there.

Sony, talking smack isn't going to help you much at this late in time of the game. Just concentrate on making good games. Back in the day when you said that price doesn't matter because people will buy a PS3 because it;s a Sony...well you were wrong....you are not the talk of the talk anymore, now you have to compete just like everyone else. As soon as you realize this, the faster you can fire the idiots who say the above quotes and just get on with competing and utilizing your product.

MS, don't get too proud, you are holding your own nicely, but things can change. Don't fall into the same trap as Sony.

Lol if you realy think about it Sony keep shooting themselves in the foot with comments like that. Think about it this way it aint going to be many years before the hardware is outdated in both the 360 and the ps3 so whats going to happen might you think. Microsoft will releaase another console and sony will just keep supporting the ps3 for 10 years. They might just do that as i think there still supporting the ps2 but I can bet you they have another console out within the next 3 - 4 years.

You are forgetting to take Moores Law into account here. Computer technology is still grinding it out but slower than moores law (every 2 years doubled power) predicted. So cause of that small fact the consoles we have now arent top notch by any means, but in console terms they are pretty powerful beasts and i expect the Xbox to last a good 7-8 years.

23 millions vs. 28 millions isn't the largest gap between consoles ever saw. Seriously do the math: 23 millions/2 years = 11.5M/Year (Vs.) 28 Millions/3 Years = 9.3M/Year. Oh and do not forget it's SHIPPED number, which mean you substract the 30% defect rate of 360 and 3% of PS3 so... 22.31M (PS3) VS 19.6M(Xbox). Who wins? And try to combine PS2, PS3 and PSP sales. Who wins? Sony has more first-party studios than Nintendo and Microsoft ones combined. If you open your mouth, by the way explain me how EA and TakeTwo have made more money out of their PS3 games if there are more 360-customers? So now go to sleep after you've done your homeworks.

They are not the one who spent half their shooter developpment cost into marketing. Just imagine how Halo would be better without all this money wasted into large marketing plans. Xbox started off stronger and has a better catalog of games. Sony is taking its time because they are planning a 10 year cycle. So MS can be proud saying: «There's an average of 10 games per consoles on our side, which is the highest number of all three consoles».

The proof that things aren't going that good for MS is their price cut.The Wii didn't drop its price since launch and that's a proof of prosperity. Microsoft knows they have a big competitor and the battle isn't won yet. All the software numbers people use to compare are NPD ones so it's all about North America. Just watch european charts and japenese charts, maybe this will help you understand the Xbox isn't leading by that much in software sales.

Moreover, just watch the TV for a day and you'll notice every adverts often only shows the Xbox360 and XboxLive logo at the end, so the public is confused and they aren't aware you can find those games on PS3. I'm pretty sure there's more Xbox360 out there than PS3, but if we calculate like I did you realize they are close, very close. Even 23M vs 28M is really close. 5 Millions gap can be closed in 8 month if something big comes from Sony (ex: K2 + price cut(65nm to 45 nm = Cheaper PS3s, maybe slim)

I'm defending PS3 when people claim Microsoft victorious when they are not. I do not care about console battle, competition brings quality and I can own both without any problem. The 360 OS has so much for functionalities than the PS3 one. However, PS3 is more reliable and I can watch blu-ray movies and play weird games like Flower, Pixel Junk and Everyday Shooter (I love those weird games).
