Just yesterday IGN Revolution launched with technical details on Nintendo's next-generation console, codenamed Revolution. And today more development sources have come forward with both clarification and even more tech specs. The latest news begins to paint a clearer picture of Nintendo's aim with its next platform.

We cannot stress this enough: Revolution is not being positioned as a competitor to either Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. Nintendo has instead chosen to design a console that will be very affordable for consumers. For that very reason, say developers in the know, the Big N has opted out of filling the system with a massive supply of expensive RAM.
In yesterday's article, we wrote that Revolution would include 128MBs of RAM, or possibly less. Developers have clarified the makeup based on officially released Nintendo documentation. Revolution will build on GameCube's configuration of 24MBs 1T-SRAM and 16MBs D-RAM (40MBs) by adding an addition 64MBs of 1T-SRAM. The result is a supply of memory in Revolution that totals 104MBs. That number does not consider either the 512MBs of allegedly accessible (but hardly ideal) Flash RAM or the Hollywood GPU's on-board memory, said to be 3MBs by sources.

Revolution's Broadway CPU, developed by IBM, is an extension of the Gekko CPU in GameCube, according to official Nintendo documentation passed to us by software houses. The Hollywood GPU, meanwhile, is believed to be an extension of the Flipper GPU in GameCube. Since developers have not gone hands-on with the GPU, they can only go on Nintendo documentation, which is limited.

Exact clock rates were not disclosed, but one development source we spoke to had this to say of the Revolution CPU and GPU: "Basically, take a GameCube, double the clock rate of the CPU and GPU and you're done."

We presented that description to another informed studio, which clarified that the clock rates may even fall short of doubling those on GameCube.

"The CPU is the same as Gekko with one and a half to two times the performance and improved caching," said a source. "Our guys experimented with it and think they'll be able to get about twice the performance as GameCube."

"It's a gamble for the Big N," said another source. "It's not about horsepower for them -- it's about innovation and gameplay."

We've also been able to unearth firm details on the storage capacity for Revolution discs. Recent rumors suggesting that the discs can hold 12GBs of data are false. In fact, Revolution discs can store 4.7GBs of data on a single layer or 8.5GBs when double-layered on a single-side. This is a massive jump from the 1.5GB capacity of GameCube discs and more than enough storage capacity for any non-high-definition game.

Readers discouraged by Revolution's seeming lack of horsepower when compared to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 should remember that Nintendo is not interested in competing in the high-definition gaming arena, and as a standard-definition console, Revolution is more than capable. Capcom's Resident Evil 4 remains one of the most gorgeous games this generation and it ran on GameCube, a console at least half as powerful according to developer reports.

Software houses we spoke with also waxed on the immediate advantage to Nintendo's approach with Revolution, which is, of course, system price. Every developer was in agreement that Revolution should launch with a price tag of $149 or lower. Some speculated that based on the tech, a $99 price point would not be out of the question.

I love nintendo, but i really hope they will market the games for the older kids this time! I'm not going to be young forever!
I'm 16 and the only games i liked on GC was Resident evil 4, Splinter cell and Super smash bros.

so you mean you didn't like supermonkeyball, f-zero gx, naruto gekitou ninja taisen, mario tennis/golf, wind waker, tales of symphonia, fire emblem, or any other of the tens of good games out there? you've got strange tastes...
(ps: good games are good an thats all there is to it, no "for older kids" or "for younger kids", otherwise they aren't really good :-) )

on topic: i'll definitely get the rev, i would've gotten it anyway but with this price tag theres nothing to loose (i sure hope the controllers won't be 30$ ;-) )

this will be the only next-gen console I will be getting (until the 360 is hacked and drastically reduced in price)

all my money goes to nintendo. Metroid and Windwaker have made a believer out of me.

will this be a flop much like the GC ?

i think so.. personally i don't think this has no chance at all.. much the reason why nintendo are making an online place for you to download previous consoles games.

So nintendo is going to use some of the existing memory found in gamecubes? wow this means that the Rev will definately be cheap, (for nintendo at least ;)
that means more money for them. Its true that Resident evil 4 had smashing graphics on the gamecube as is, and if rev is 2-3 time more powerful, then to make it look next gen, throw in a bit of HDR lighting and larger textures at it and then it will look the part, which judging by the specs seems like it should be possible.

As far as porting games is concerned as long as the Rev gets decent ports of games that look different enough to the others, a bit like tonys hawk us sk8 land or whatever on the DS ( it has totally different graphics (cel shaded) compared to other version out there, so a direct comparison with graphics is not possible, only the way it plays, if more developers do the same with revolution, I think there will be no problem for the Rev.

I just want one Yesterday!

I was skeptical about Nintendo's more recent moves until the wifi thing went up. Now there are quite a few great games for DS.

I love my cube, and I hope the Rev will be just as great.

I really don't place much stock in hardware specs when it comes to the quality of games. In the last console war the X-Box had the best, yet none of the exclusives really drew me in (Fable, Halo, etc...). I really don't see how graphics that rival top end PCs is going to sell to me. I have a Cube and PSX, and that covered EVERY game option I wanted. However, Cube releases are almost always more highly anticipated by me. I'm looking forward a lot to the Rev release (partially because I'm poor, and under 200$ really sells me) because I know the games will be top notch, and at the very least, interesting. Maybe a 360 when it gets cracked and I can justify the price tag.

Not to mention all the previouse Resident Evil games looked gorgeouse on the system before big 4. Those games were still very impressive. I still think 1 is incredibly realistic and I stopped playing it completely cause I was terrified to turn a corner for the last time :-). And no I'm not joking.

I'm a massive Nintendo Fanboy but I'm seriously worried my fellow Goombas. I can't see the big N strategy paying off without the system being classed as the KIDDIE system AGAIN! I worship the ground Mario stomps on and wet myself everytime Link moans with a sword slash but without the right market segment buying the console, Nintendo is gonna be shafted by the 3rd Party publishers once again.

I REALLY hope I'm wrong but Nintendo I think you've just dug your own grave, your just not going to appeal to the technofile 20 somethings and over. People like me, we work and got money to spend so I'd pay another couple 100 dollars to get the "good" system instead of the underspec'ed kiddie system. :(

I sense EPIC double-the-gorgeousness-of-metroid-prime-2 style games...

Just imagine a game that is twice as nice as mp2 and then 4 times bigger... :D

We all know ninty have a good track record of making textures TINY...

I've know since E3 that the revolution would not have the greatest graphics and I am perfectly fine with that. 3rd party developers have been dumping crap onto the gamecube for years, but that didnt stop some of them being good. But unless those developers can create originals for the system, they better forget it. For example, Visual Impact, Ubisoft, Destination Software Inc., Sensory Sweep (actually all of EA), and THQ have all released VERY BAD games/ports for the DS. So if developers do not at least TRY to make games for the Revolution, the console will fail. Nintendo cannot create the same amount of software for the Revolution when compared to all of the good studios making games for the 360/PS3. PRICE and Nintendo franchises are the reasons this will be my next-gen console. Graphics are just gravy. thats my 0.02$.
