So I'm interested in picking up a Wii, mostly for Japanese imports and one of the sole things I'll have to do is install the HBC. What I'm wondering is, how are Nintendo handling the issue, and what are they doing to combat these exploits?

Sony were pretty notorious for at least doing something to combat it. One of their main ways of doing so was with new console releases. All of a sudden a new run of PSP's would come out, with the newer hardware/firmware, stopping things like current downgraders etc. Any purchaser would then have a bricked machine if they were stupid enough to try downgrading. Yes, we now have Pandora for issues like that, but the principle was still there.

What I'm not wanting is for me to buy a new Wii and it have the newest revision of their firmware already installed. I know games ask you to update, but have they been showing similar methods of firmware release?

I just don't want to pick up a system that could potentially be useless for the time...

From what I gather they recently changed there ULA to say that they can install updates without warning(they previously had you agree to the upgrade).

The latest update 3.4 was put out to stop the twilight princess hack (enable homebrew) but this has already been some what bypassed.

I would buy a will of ebay or something because you will have a better chance of getting a older version of the firmware and the actual dvd drive (easier for hardmod).

Basically check with a site like this before you use a new game to see if it has issues.

So, if I buy a Wii from the store this christmas (UK if it makes any difference) will it be likely that it has 3.4 installed?

Also about TP, you need the Wii version right? Not GC?
