I installed the wiikey2 6 wire version so nothing is soldered to the legs. So my problem is that when I first installed it the wii would immediately cut off when I hit the power button and wouldnt do anything unless the power cord was unplugged. If I plugged it back in it would repeat the on off problem. Well I opened the wii back up shortened my power and ground wires to a minimum and it worked fine after that. Now after my friend takes it home he calls and says its doing the exact same thing again. I used 30awg wire on all points. Do I need bigger ground and power? Any solutions would be helpful. Thanks

Yeah, as didineedthis has said better to have heavier wire for ground and power. Ground more so. If you don't want have heavier wire you can twist 2 pieces of 30 gauge wire together. (Yes, yes it's not the same.... But it has never failed me)
It's also strange that this behaviour is happening. Make sure your chip is properly taped up. If it's moving or touching other parts while closed you could have problems. And of course make sure you properly stripped the wires so that they are not over exposed such that when you close the case they touch each other and bridge points/wires accidentally.

For ground I personally just create 1 big solder bridge from the chip ground point to the pad on the drive board (flow a nice big dollop pad to pad). This holds the chip in place and creates a perfect ground. Then a nice fat wire to the power pad.
Wiikey 2 is the best chip (and easiest for that matter) I've ever used on the Wii. Well it's joint 1st easiest to the original PIC chip types Wiinja/YOASM etc.
I'm loving Wiikey 2's. Rock solid reliable and easy to fit. Config discs work a charm, no messing with different flashes etc.

That sounds really complicated

dannybII I tried your method of flowing solder from the chip right onto the ground pad on the board. With the chip installed like this I get power on the wii but no dvd drive response. Light in the wiikey is red. Any ideas?

How is that remotely relevant? The thread is regarding Wiikey 2. He is using a 6-wire installation which means it's a D2C/D2C2/D2E drive and openwii is not even a compatible solution.

If the LED is red it indicates a failure to patch the drive (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). This could have something to do with the installation. Could you post a pic of the install?
If the drive motor is not responsive you could check your fuses with a multi-meter. But then again it could be because of the installation.

Better to solder 4 or 5 wires than the older 22 wire chip :)
