Microsoft have confirmed that they are moving to internal memory for the Xbox 360 Arcade and that it is the same size as the previous external memory units - 256MB.

"We are constantly updating the console's more than 1700 internal components. We can confirm that we are moving to internal memory for the Xbox 360 Arcade. The physical internal memory is the same size as the previous external memory units - 256MB."

couldnt this potentionally lead the way for hackers with internal memory to store system files on

PSP?

Or they could make it 2gb of cheap-as-dirt flash so that arcade can cache files too.

Hackers had complete access to HDD for years already nothing came out of it probably only way to do something is infectus or whatever that thing is called.

Wait... is it really cheaper to do all this internal memory bs, or to just include an f ing 20gb with the arcade now?

I would think all the extra motherboard production costs would be more expensive.

They already spent the millions fabbing the new boards, adding in this chip in place of the memory card ports which they likely hauled, its reducing manufacturning cost. Connectors or I/O ports cost a hell of a lot more than IC's do.

Either way a 256MB NAND chip is cents when bought by the millions.

They should at least toss in 512MB's... even the poor old Wii comes with that much.

Anyway I wonder how the system will handle the memory if it goes bad. I have had some bad experiences with flash ram going bad. PS1 memory cards, PS2 memory cards, USB thumb drives.

Just 2 months ago I had to take back a 4GB USB stick that died after like 3 months on me... (turned out ok for a little more $$$ I got an 8GB unit)

This is not just for the 360, I now wonder if the Wii will have the same problems ?

It's probably not your typical external flash memory, but more akin to the RAM chips. So it has as much of a chance to go bad as the video memory, or even less.

How tight is that, it's bad enough that they have been ripping us off with severely overpriced HDD and Mem cards, but now they think that giving what is effectively an obsolete size of storage built in is a good thing. There is no reason why it couldn't have been 2gb at least. If supermarkets in the UK can afford to sell 2gb SD cards for £10 the there is no doubt that MS can get their at the same size for a fraction of that.

I don't see whay they don't do away with the arcade now and just sell the HDD versions.

its probably their best selling sku since its the cheapest & most gamers buy it as a replacement for their RROD consoles.

Yeah, 256 is crappy, but there is another possibility that we are not thinking about. Using such a small flash, despite not being completely cost effective, might allow them to sell the 360 for even cheaper. I can actually see them selling the cores for $179. Or at least offer an extra game at the $199. This could be extra pressure for Sony to finally drop the PS3 price a little. This wouldn't be bad for either type of fanboy.

Or as a game system replacement for their PS3 consoles.:D

This 256mb is merely so that you don't need any external mem cards for your NXE updates and you can use it to for game saves as well.

Why? Do you rather pay more for an entry system?

I really want an arcade but only a 60gb hard drive will suffice for me. Looks like I'm gonna have to live a life of crime.

Seems another move in the work in progress hardware that is the 360. I like this move but feel earlier adopters like myself have been screwed yet again by Microsoft. Though the size is really too small when you consider the wii has 512mb and that's not enough for the wii's needs. I would have though it more sense to actually price the add on hdd at a real world hdd price or give the arcade a hdd as standard and move to only 2 sku's.
