Microsoft's Xbox 360 kicked off the holidays with record- breaking console sales on one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year in the U.S. Retailers reported Xbox 360 console sales over the Black Friday weekend were on pace to beat previous years, outselling the PlayStation 3 by a three-to-one ratio and estimating a 25 percent increase from Xbox 360 Black Friday sales figures from 2007. "We entered into the Black Friday sales period with cautious optimism, knowing that dollar for dollar, Xbox 360 offers more social entertainment value than any other console on the market," said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft.

Strong game sales rounded out a historic Black Friday for Xbox 360, with record-paced software sales continuing for key Microsoft titles, such as "Gears of War 2," "Fable II," and "Lips." Xbox 360 continues to have the highest game attach rate of any console at 8.1 games per console.
"We entered into the Black Friday sales period with cautious optimism, knowing that dollar for dollar, Xbox 360 offers more social entertainment value than any other console on the market," said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. Xbox 360 sales have also surged worldwide since the September price drop, outselling the PlayStation 3 week over week across Europe. Console sales in Europe are up as much as 400 percent, with sales nearly double year over year and reaching 7 million consoles sold this generation.
With a mass-market price point starting at $199.99 worldwide (estimated retail price) for Xbox 360 Arcade, a games lineup of more broad-appeal social titles than any other platform, and the recently launched New Xbox Experience, Xbox 360 is leading the industry and inviting everyone to play.

One reason it is selling well is because the new Jasper models have hit the streets. Proof has already been provided that many post Nov. 2008 systems are carrying the new 65 nm chipset. Not all are Jaspers though. Apparently, the Jaspers have a 150 w power supply. Please double check to make sure my information is correct. Can't wait to get one though, if it's true!

Most retailers just didn't have much PS3 deals....
But yeah, MS's willingness to re-invent xbox's image with NXE and lowered price definitely win over a lot of new customers (me included).
This does not surprise me at all. At a 199.00 Selling point and loads of awesome new games they were bound to be on top this season.
Not to mention with the economy the way it is.... People are going economical with the least costing machine on the planet for next Gen systems,,,
This did not surprise me at all. Walmart among other stores have loads of PS3's sitting on the shelves with not a Xbox to be found.;)

What whole package?, the only thing that you need is the console, (and maybe the HDD), all other accessories are extras and not needed for the "whole HD package".

so lets get this right, on the cheapskates weekend, during a time of tough finances the cheapest console with the biggest offers sold more units than than a high priced blu-ray player that also plays a few games that had very few decent offers on it. i'm shocked.
i noticed that he didnt mention the wii so i assume that even at the higher price it still outsold the 360?

Expected...walmart the world retail leader focused on xbox 360 this season. That with the cheap price and cool bundles and walmart matching all black friday sales. It was expected.
I wouldn't call it a clear victory over sony as sony didn't even seem to put up a effort. Even on sonystyles and other websites the focus was on blu-ray stand alone players and not on ps3.
Not taking a price cut was a dumb mistake. Even a temp price cut would have helped.

Seriously I don't see why anyone is even surprised, The Xbox for what it is at it's core is great value, Most of it's games look better than the rival, it is almost half the price of the Ps3 (less if you talk about the Arcade) and has the most games, many which are discounted by now.
In the current economic climate this will play a major factor. Parents who are planning on getting a games console for their kids are going to look at the price, and will choose the 360 over the other consoles. Though probably not over the Wii, I know loads of people who have brought one, and only one person who has brought any games for it, most are stil happy with the Wii Sports game.
As for Jasper, most consoles are still the old chipset, it will probably be January when we will see the majority of stock being Jasper chipset I bet.

this 3:1 (even if its only 2:1) is still a huge ass whooping to sony. you can argue that these are gloated figures from m$, but in the past their 'sales figures' have been relatively true.
in the 'others' continent.. 360 was close to 2:1 for hardware sales for the week of nov29th. id imagine with black friday and people beating eachother to death for the 360, america sales will be a fair bit higher.
and yeah, if you think the 65nm 360 has anything to do with you, you really need to reevaluate your thinking

Walmart had some big sale for the 360 with guitar hero bundle so that definitely helped move some units. I don't even think I saw sales regarding the PS3 in any advertisements.

I think the $199 Arcade model with the free 20GB HDD and controller had something to do with it... The PS3? Well... was it even bundled with anything? Only exception I know of was Amazon's $199 deal with the bundled games and movies.

Also i expect the Ban Hammer was a good idea for them to increase their Black Friday sales in USA.

Its funny but most of the folks I know bought it because they didn't have to buy the whole experience. The average price on the 20 gig drive is around $30 where I live...if they decide the play enough to need one its cheaper than a second controller.
no surprise.. so many retail stores sell it with free games..I got one in frys with 7 free games at $299.99 (2 from holiday bundle) and 5 from frys......and so many in stock for sale..
Sony needs a serious price cut...$399.99 with no games bundle is too expensive to compete

This just proves that nothing is forever. Sony takes Nintendo's spot and now MS is taking Sony's spot. I've got to hand it to MS, they screwed up royally with RRoD issues, but they have made some respectable improvements in their hardware design. Their bad reputation has gotten much better. MS has the games, the price, and the online structure - and Sony has Blu-ray. Don't get me wrong, wireless on the PS3 is great and the HDD options are much better, but when it boils down to it, a 20gb 360 just has a lot more to offer simply because of the software available and the price.

I do want to say that the PS3 did do OK considering its pricepoint. It may be easy to say that a retailer was biased, like Walmart, but on game consoles, retailers rely on Vendor credits on special deals. If Sony didn't offer credits, then there is no reason for retailers to take a hit on something that they don't make a profit on otherwise. To MS- hats off to you for your strategy. I can't wait to see the Wii numbers, but most stores had just handfuls of them versus pallettes full of 360, so I would have to guess that the 360 outsold the Wii by technicality. We could bicker about miscellaneous components(i.e. wifi), but realistically, a person could of bought a $200 xbox and a Blu-Ray player for $129. But either way getting such a high level of graphics for $200 is phenominal. To all the fanboys on either side, I sincerely hope the numbers game doesn't stop you from just enjoying what you like. And one more thing, I did force myself to go to gamestop this morning, and they told me that the 360 indeed slaughtered (their words) the PS3 in sales, so I believe the numbers are accurate. The store I went to said that they even sold out of all their used 360 consoles also. I think that's sad because I think that they end up costing more than retail, kinda sad that people are so impatient. The good news is that that store was one of the ones selected to empty out their blu-ray catalog, and I got a lot of Blu-Rays for $9.99, including Underworld Evolution and Fantastic Four 2. Probably the only real deals I got their in years.

Yes, because the parents of 13-16 year olds know ALL about chipsets. I'd say about .01% of 360 owners actually know what Jasper is.
Btw, it owns. I picked up a new 360 and it runs MUCH quieter now. Idling is as quiet at my PS3, and disc spin is about as loud as the old 360 was at idle.

people that bought the arcade sku are about to spend more than just buying the premium version of 360 or better yet buying a PS3. An HDMI cable is just $5.00 USD and that's all. How much are M$ selling their cable...$49.99 USD i believe. man i own 360 just b/c of the backups i can play on it. nothing more. i didn't even get that nxe yet you know why, I DON'T NEED/USE IT. you talk about cost effective but tell me why do i have to pay yearly for something called LIVE??? Sony offers online gameplay for free (don't start the performance wars b/c they both offer great/bad online game experiences). LIVE offers the online gameplay but then these other useless features about it. If online gameplay remained free then 360 might have the edge but for me to have online play charges makes 360 a useless console and robbing the consumer. I just want online gameplay and that's it. Why must online play have a fee??? PC, DC, PS2 and even the Wii do not charge for online multiplayer play and why must a big corporation like M$ do it??? I don't know about the rest of you but these are not MMOs we are playing on the 360 so why pay???

DVD and Bluray aren't the same beast. DVD offered a lot more improvements over VHS, then Bluray does over DVD. I was not just about picture quality, DVD offered size of media improvement, easy of fast forwarding, and a more durable media. DVD's didn't take off until there were players below $100 and the video rental stores had more DVDs for new releases then VHS copies. It's obviously a different world now, over half of my local video rental stores have closed and people can now easily download movies or go to RedBox for a $1 DVD.

The install base for HD TV is currently at 14% here in the US and of those less than 10% of those have 1080p so why in the hell does everyone need HDMI. BTW have you bothered to check the prices of the "official" sony HDMI/USB cable pack (here's a hint...its not $49.99 its $79.99) :eek:
that's actually a lie and won't happen until the next-gen console come around. when dvd was out in 1998 i believe, it didn't go mainstream until 2001 when dvd players were about $400.00 USD. The first ones out in '98 cost around $3,000 USD.
So if 4 years is now your measurement for mass adoption, what your saying is that after a year of "2008 is the year of the Playstation" its now going to be 2010?

man i own 360 just b/c of the backups i can play on it. nothing more. i didn't even get that nxe yet you know why, I DON'T NEED/USE IT. you talk about cost effective but tell me why do i have to pay yearly for something called LIVE??? Sony offers online gameplay for free (don't start the performance wars b/c they both offer great/bad online game experiences). LIVE offers the online gameplay but then these other useless features about it. If online gameplay remained free then 360 might have the edge but for me to have online play charges makes 360 a useless console and robbing the consumer. I just want online gameplay and that's it. Why must online play have a fee??? PC, DC, PS2 and even the Wii do not charge for online multiplayer play and why must a big corporation like M$ do it??? I don't know about the rest of you but these are not MMOs we are playing on the 360 so why pay???
Lots of people dont seem real bothered about their $4 a month to play on Live, no one puts a gun to your head, hell I dont even have gold at the moment wasnt using it enough. If your so convinced that the PS3 is so superior why do you spend nearly all your time in the 360 threads defending it even if the PS3 isnt mentioned in the thread? If your so happy with it why not spend your in the PS3 threads expressing your joy...or better yet spend the time actually playing games on it. The PS3 has some great games, I play mine regularly, but all of the consoles have their faults and weaknesses the PS3 included, you should really accept that before you give yourself an ulcer.
If you want to be pissed at anything over weak PS3 sales over black friday be pissed at Magnavox and Samsung both of which had bluray players for as low as $139, taking the cheapest blueray player trophy and stealing marketshare from Sony, bluray was their big push and they are loosing their biggest selling point.
Your constant whining and anger about how much better the PS3 is sounds more like kid frightened that his beloved console might end up in last place than someone happy with their console choice. Im happy with my PS3 regardless of its market position, why arent you?

To be honest, I really couldn't care less which console sold the most units.
This proves nothing.
The PlayStation 2 has sold the most units according to VG charts but I think it's not a great console. I'd say the XBOX360,PlayStation 3 and the Wii are all better.

nobody is angry but it's just so funny and yet debatable for sales of 360 rising. Games shouldn't be "serious business" and which company do you think is taking it to this level??? Everything has been fair about the ps3. Right about now even with the $399 USD price tag, no one should have an excuse to not own a ps3. If many could've afforded 360 at that price, why can't they afford the ps3 now instead???
It wasn't just Samsung and Magnavox, even Sony BD players were on sale. Many BD standalone players were on sale that day and i can't see how YOU can find that bad news for PS3 when that's actually a good thing. That just shows how much BD is rising and when the time comes for the movie consumer to get into HD gaming then PS3 will definitely be their console choice b/c again, PS3 contains the whole package right out of the box. Price drops for PS3 will happen, and everyone knows that so this "console war" is far from over.

I know you did not just call the 399 price "fair" when all the consoles are already nearing halfway into their lifespan, i mean comeon an xbox for 199 and a wii for 249 now that is pricing people can work with, at my store (target) everyone does "the face" when i tell them the ps3's price and it gets even funnier when they ask me what more does the 499 version have over the 399. lets face it sony had the right idea but poorly implimented when they had the cheap 20gig then killed it and now are on overkill, had the 20gig lived it would have been able to compete nicely with the Arcade. WHY sony just keeps adding drive space and making it cost more is beyond me. Also on a side note if standalone players are cheaper than the ps3 and sell off the shelves that is great news for sony as a whole but sony gaming will go down the tubes since also at my store a customer is willing to save 100 dollars and go for the Sony 350 BD player than get a ps3.

whats not fair is all bluray players dropped in price 100$+ bluray has already become cheap to make yet the ps3 hasnt seen a drop in price to follow suite and the cell is already outdated by other cell's 399 for a ps3 is too much, if it was 299 it would actually sell.

Well Blu-ray players had a large markup, PS3 is already selling at a loss (which is now less). If you said they should provide more options without all the extras then fair enough but I just found it astonishing that you called the price of the Wii "fair" when that is the console with a huge markup (ie you pay more than its physical worth) then go on to say they should still give 20GB models when a bigger HDD is about the only thing they SHOULD include for games. What do you mean the Cell is already outdated by other Cells? the PowerPC has been out for years are you saying it should now cost nothing?
