View Full Version : MS: We're not concerned about PS3 price cut or new PS3 games/features
Chris Lewis, VP of the Interactive Entertainment Business for Microsoft EMEA, was recently asked what Microsoft will do keep the Xbox 360 ahead of the PS3 when Sony "starts truly leveraging their brand in Europe with more features, more games, and a lower price." Lewis replied saying he certainly would not want to trade places with Sony and that, fundamentally, he's not concerned as the Xbox 360 still has a lot more to come. "They’ll have different things coming during the Christmas, as indeed will we. I’m very confident, however, that we have a much broader spectrum of games and experiences." he said.
As for the competition with PlayStation, Microsoft has dropped the price, and in a sense, the ball is in Sony’s court to respond, or counter-attack. Maybe it’ll be with a price cut. Their big first-party games are picking up and, eventually, there’s PlayStation Home. What does happen when Sony starts truly leveraging their brand in Europe with more features, more games, and a lower price? It's still a year-younger system. What’s Microsoft doing to stay ahead of the curve?
Well, there are a couple of things I’d say. One is that I’d certainly not want to trade places. I think we are in a very strong position, not only as we remain ahead of them overall in EMEA, but at and through Christmas we’ll have extended that lead for a number of reasons. [Aside from a price drop and high-profile software], there’s a whole lot more to come, as you’d expect.
And as much as I’d like to say, “Oh hey, we don’t look at the competition, we’re fixated on what we’re doing,” that would not be true. I’m not complacent about competition. I think in many ways, the quality of the competition is what keeps pushing the quality bar up, generally. We’re mindful of what’s happening, but we march to our own rhythm. We’ve always had the strategy to bring our price point down the way that we have, and we’ll continue to operate that way. They’ll have different things coming during the Christmas, as indeed will we. I’m very confident, however, that we have a much broader spectrum of games and experiences.
Fundamentally, I’m not concerned, because I know we have got a lot more still to come.

If this sorta thing happened in the 90s with the games consoles I owned, I would have been so pissed off. I hate the fact you gotta pay £40 for Online, piss off! There isn't much games on the 360 that appeal to me.

I agree, this kind of stuff would be unacceptable in the 90's, but nowadays it is all about making stuff as cheap as possible while making the most profit.
Just think about TVs now compared to then. Now: You replace your TV or it breaks on you every 1 or 2 years. Back then: Sh!t, I still have a 15 year old TV that still works perfectly! I have dropped it, spilled soda on/in it. Still good.

It is so funny to read this because I can't think of any games that appeal to me on the PS3, yet I bought one anyways.
I bought into the hype that MGS4 was going to be the messiah of gaming goodness (it wasn't) and after playing MGS3 (what I think is one of the greatest games of all time) I was so hyped that I bought it out of blind support based on the past. Between that and the promise of FFXIII I was to emotionally attached to Sony. Well the past was great, but the NOW sucks balls.
The problem is now I am in too deep to get out. I could never get back more that a fraction of the money and time I spent in getting it so I am going to ride the wave on out.

So, games like heavenly sword, hot shots golf, uncharted, buzz quiz game, singstar, littlebigplanet, gran turismo, folklore, mgs 4, lair, motorstorm, eye of judgement, warhawk, ratchet & clank, siren, resistance or wipeout don't appeal to you? Come on. That's something from all genres that could appeal to anyone. The reason I got my ps3 was I didn't want to chance a hardware failure and still refuse to pay for online services. Other than that, the two consoles are close enough to being the fuckin' same.
Now, if we were talking about the wii, I fall into that group that loves mario. I signed a blank check and sent it to nintendo with pix of me holding my virtual boy and 13lb gameboy with tetris cart.

I never really played through MGS3. loved 1 and 2. I played the first mission and ended up getting eaten by a crocodile/aligator and ended up playing the other games I had yet to complete. I might give it another shot if you say that its that good.

MGS3 was by far better than 4. After I finished playing through 4 I was deeply disappointed. 4 is vastly overrated, 3 is 100x the game that 4 is. The biggest problem for me with 4 is that it's basically a shooter, and a bad one. Yes there is still "stealth" but it's not the same as the first 3 games. You can buy guns and ammo at any point in the game and as long as you pick up dropped weapons you will always have a ton of money. You basically lose the stealth part of the game when you can buy tranq darts whenever you want or just buy a machine gun and hold down the trigger. It doesn't really feel like metal gear. IMO it is the weakest game of the series.
End of rant.

You could use a machine gun in any MGS and gun your way through. The whole point is the choice, you either go guns blazing or you play the game properly.
That aside I really respect your opinion. I too feel that MGS 1 and 3 were better games though I don't think MGS 4 was as you say. I think it lived up to the expectation, a thrill all the way, just how it should be.

Yeah I know, I couldn't help but make a list. It's ridiculous the amount of I didn't get this console because it didn't have 'x' game. God forbid, you don't have a single friend that owns the opposing console to play gears or halo on. I like my ps3 but i do enjoy chainsawing people. It's win win.
And on MGS4. It was very good. The boss fights [especially the final one] and the motorcycle chase were great. I personally felt 2 was the best for the fact you had the tranq. gun and could do shakedowns. And who can forget the samurai sword?

The point of metal gear was always supposed to be stealth when possible and never go guns blazing. Metal gear 4 isn't a bad game by any means, but it is a bad metal gear, if that makes sense.

I always liked that in MGS2, there were different modes of play which changed the whole experience of the game and your way of thinking. From collecting all the dog tags, not killing anyone, not being seen, to just run and gunning. The main bonus being that you were actually rewarded for doing them. It seems that alot of people like MGS3, I know what I'm going to be playing then if I can put down LBP that is.

They are, but it's just that situation where you do it for the first time in a game that's so great. Like in God of War the button commands to pull off sweet cinematics and finishers. It has been copied to death and now feels stale. I think MGS4 did good by going in a more fast paced direction. Just a sign of the times.

If you have not played MGS3 you are really missing out on one of the pinnacles of gaming greatness. I can only think of one game that had a better story than MGS3 and that was FFVII. The gameplay was top-notch. The story was top-notch. The bosses were top-notch. It was so cool learning about the backstory of The Boss and seeing all come together in an epic conclusion. Not to mention a young Revolver Ocelot who really stole the show.
Also, MGS3 had in my estimation, without a doubt, the best ending in the history of gaming. I can't fucking hype MGS3 enough, it was epic. And the best part now is that you can find it for less than $10 USD. Pick it up, if you were even a little interesting in MGS1 and 2 you will love it.

I am so sick of hearing how great FF7 was. Yeah I love Sephi like all others, but the game felt so cliched and shallow. Wheretf is character development? I mean Xenogears hit it on the nose storywise. Deep, philosophical and great character development. Gameplay was a bit tedious but a fair trade off.
Don't even get me started on the epic greatness of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. A simple tale of love powered by the urgency to save your loved one. And what's more epic than toppling a monster the size of a skyscraper chasing you while you fire off arrows on horseback and you're a 16 yo kid?
Not to mention the ending of SotC ranks as one of the 5 best endings ever. Nuff said.

I couldv'e swore there was some hack to play backups but you had to have the case open kinda like the fliptop in the ps2 days? Dunno how it works though, so I'm just guessing here. C4eva who said he'd start working on the PS3 BluRay drive's firmware(?) is currently busy with the new Lite-On drive. Once he's done with it he'll probably be a man of his word and start working on the PS3. Afaik people haven't been that interested in hacking the PS3 because it would almost solely be for the purpose of piracy.
Back to the derailed topic, it's good to see that the competition between the PS3 and Xbox 360 is so close that neither is winning yet. If it stays like this, we could see some good games for a change. Doubt it, but it's always a possibility. Speaking of doubt, did anyone else feel like the new Banjo-Kazooie game was a bad Banjo-Kazooie game? I mean, Rare again blew it imo on the 360, maybe they should go back to Nintendo? I don't want them to ruin Conker too with a crappy sequel.

BTW I noticed your PS3 tag and noticed only 1 game that I will consider playing; Bioshock, I highly recommend games like Uncharted, Rachet and definitely LBP but it depends on if you like these sort of games.

It's competition. You never show your concern, especially when your asked and your exact words are going on the internet :p
And btw to the strcp dude, the PS3 will eventually get cracked, nothing is uncrackable.
Nope, not for a while. :) When PSP was hacked, hackers made Sony realize something. This is why Sony made PS3's security so strong, and it's even more powerful than stupid 360.
