View Full Version : MS charging $100 to fix Xbox 360's bricked by NXE?
One gamer is claiming that Microsoft is asking for $100 to fix his Xbox 360 that was bricked after installing the New Xbox Experience. Many gamers have apparently received an error code after the NXE install.

It only bricks if you tampered with the e-fuse (which is naturally blown during some earlier update in order to restrict downgrading the console to an exploitable kernel).

A simplistic, short explanation:
Xbox360 is exploitable on a very old firmware version. Exploitable as in "homebrew enabled". MS found out, they included some special procedure in the update which blows a special fuse on the motherboard (e-fuse).
People with older 360's found a way to keep the fuse in-tact (by removing a particular resistor from the MB).
It seems that if you have the resistor removed while installing the nXe - it bricks giving you an E80 error.
In other words: the problem of bricking can only get to you if you do some really hardcore modding on purpose.

so in laymens terms.. use your infectus to backup the current firmware before installing NXE, if you pulled T6R3 I think it is - little 0402 resistor.
I guess I got lucky, err, kinda. I pulled the e-fuse on my unit and it 3RLOD JUUST before I was about to update... now I know not to update that one if I ever get it working again.

There are a number of eFuses within the
360, if I believe they're all located within
the CPU itself.
What some people do to prevent eFuses
from blowing is to remove a certain resitor
named R6T3 which effectively prevents
updates from blowing any further fuses.
This comes in handy when experimenting/
switching between different dash versions.
The NXE update is the first which actually
checked if an eFuse got blown during the
update. People with R6T3 removed will
get an error that way.
Check xboxhacker's forums for more
accurate info.

People are always claiming that the updates brakes their consoles. It doesn't matter if it's a 360 or a PS3. I wouldn't be surprised if they were already broken and trying to use the update as an excuse to get a free repair job. "Oh no, I just updated my 360 and now I got the rrod!" Yeah right, whatever.

Believe it or not, but misflashes can and do happen even if the eFuse isn't tampered with. Most misflashes can be fixed via clearing the partial flash, but components in the chain up to the NAND still fail and lose tolerance from what they were originally made to (even more so in a high heat environment.)

They are only valid if the console is NOT tampered with, and obviously if you are removing resistors you are tampering with the console.

dude, presuming this is all true...
Someone didn't want to blow e-fuses who owned it before you.
so, find a 10k 0402 resistor (SMT style) or ANY 10k resistor really.. smaller the better tho.
now
get a torex 10 and a torex 8 screwdriver. disassemble the console completely.
now you have a mainboard, flip it over.
look for this spot, R6T3, and affix the 10k resistor.
http://www.360mods.net/modules/coppermine/albums/userpics/efuse/r6t3.jpg
it don't matter which way, resistors are passive. just one end to one side, the other to the other side. make sure its insulated/protected from shorting to the case, theres not a lot of clearance.
If you are not good at soldering (its easy to re-attach) get a friend who is good to do it for you, takes literally 6 seconds to do.
Now your xbox should boot again, and it will save you around $89

yup, now if your 360 dies ur fuked if ithe original 360 you bought was a launch 360
sucks for me, gotta be careful and get some aftermarket cooling now:(
and this is how they screwed everyone, if they gave a lifetime warranty on rrods that would've been great but they gave 3 years, and if you sent it in for repair they still make money because they replace ur 360 with a refurbished one, and then refurbish your old 360 and either sell it as new(recertified) or give it to someone else, but after 3 years when your 360 dies regaurdless of how many times you rma it, u still will have to buy another 360 or pay for repair and this is where their profit will come from.
and I fully understand and accept that because they will still take losses from people who purposely rrod their 360 and it will all even out in the end anyway.

Not true. When you receive a replacement or a repaired 360, you get another 3 year warranty on that box.

Highly unlikely. Simply because it is a method of getting a lifetime warranty. Anybody who is about to finish 3 yrs can intentionally RROD their system to get cover for 3 more years. So again highly unlikely and perhaps false info you are giving out. A warranty is a warranty it does not extend as you say otherwise the company can face ruin.

It's true in the UK at least. You get a letter with your refurb/replacement explaining the warranty renewal. I've had to send mine back three times and have had the renewal letter every time, along with 3 months of XBL Gold and two play n charge kits.

The year is 1988, the game system of choice is the NES. The system was $400 at launch and games were $60 a piece. 20 years later it is now 2008. The game system of choice is Microsoft XBOX 360, price was $400 at launch and games are $60.

with another 3 year warranty? I must say I'm rather surprised and somewhat confused as to why they just didn't say "lifetime warranty" to avoid people intentionally RROD'ing their system near the 3 year mark.

too true. piracy was almost non-existant back in the day of cartridges and games were still extremely expensive. Its also ironic that the PC counterpart of all console games are cheaper even though most people seem to consider the PC platform "pirated to hell and back".

LOL, what i was said is i am on my 2ed PS3 and my 2ed 360. My newer 360 is over 2 years old and runs great. My first PS3 did not last 6 months. I think they both have huge problems. Both do great things. But sony has done nothing in the last 2 years to make me want to support them any more. They just keep making Bluray movies cost more and more and refuse to drop the price of the PS3. The games DO NOT run as good as good on the 360. I would not be surprised if sony dropped the PS3 in the next 2 years. Home will not save them. kill zone might bring some new people but not with 50,000 people a week losing jobs. Any way i am just feed up with sony.

The excellent software(and the 3yr/lifetime rrod warranty) makes up for the shoddy hardware, in my opinion. Out of my previous consoles the only ones to fail were the PS1 and PS2, both as defective as the early 360s yet no extended warranty... hmm. Saying that, I bought several iterations of both consoles... because the software was worth it.

With every generation buying consoles is a crap shoot...its been that way ever since moving parts were added (cd/dvd, etc). This generation the only things I have had problems with have been a DS which had a smashed screen (my fault), my first Wii (dead out of the box, well not dead but white spots all over the screen) and my PSP which decided to have spontaneous UMD drive failure. The DS was replaced for $50 when I called support and explained what I had done. The Wii was replaced within a week under warranty and was returned with an extra wiimote. The PSP still has a broken UMD drive after Sony's phone support determined that surely I had abused it (never mind that I had only owned for around 6 months and was so anal retentive about it that I kept a screen protector on it as well as an armor case.) after that I decided screw it and flashed my PSP. So far my PS3 and my 360 have both been flawless since I took them out of the box.
Last generation I had a dreamcast, gamecube and 5 ps2's. My dreamcast still works, ditto for my gamecube, the ps2 I have now is my second slim black one after having the first die due to the recalled power supply. The 3 previous ones were the old fat ones, one had video failure the other two stopped reading disks (again my fault according to sony).
I guess after my experiences I should if anything be pissed of at Sony but I still buy their stuff because I like the games, I just buy them with the understanding that if anything goes wrong im stuck buying another.
Im sure others have had complete opposite experiences, I dont know of anyone personally but I have read on here of people going through as many and more 360's as I did PS2's. Bottom line is its all a crap shoot but it still amazes me that MS is held to much higher scrutiny when at least they admitted fault and tried to do something about it. I guess they should learn a lesson and next generation deny it and try to convince the customers it was all their fault??

Good point!

fair enough but I certainly hope you weren't happy about it, were you?
Of course not,. Banjo 3 is fookin ace tho', really. Roll on next-gen.

You would be wrong. MS did actively deny it at first just as they did with the 360 scratching discs putting the blame on the user. Perhaps they face more scrutiny because consumers did not want to put up with another PS2 fiasco and filed lawsuits against them and I think rightly so.
BTW my ver7 fat PS2 is still going strong but a friend of mine had to manually align his laser on his ver9. were your PS2's version 9 or 10 and were they chipped? I know that that was troublesome vers with a modchip.

No idea what version they were though their rotting corpses are still probably somewhere in my basement. Nope none were modded, just not something im real interested in, had to with the PSP out of necessity but I got over the mod chip thing when I sold my Gamedoctor back in the late 90's. :) I did try pot adjustments and other various "fixes" though..never seemed to do any good.

if you still have them and want to play them (if everything else is working except the laser) you might want to look into HDLoader or a DMS4 modchip it will give it a new life. I can always give you a Memory card with the exploit if you need it.
You might even want to consider selling them on ebay. since some people are still after older fat PS2s for this exact reason. I think the 3 month PS2 warranty was a joke luckily they extended it for this generation.

I got off the phone with Xbox support today. I just downloaded the NXE update and my console immediately gave me the E80 error message with the one flashing red light in the bottom right quadrant. I have never tampered with the box and rarely use it for anything other than playing dvds. The box is in the same condition that it was in when support sent it back to me when there was the issue of the three red lights, so I do not believe that the error message is somehow related to NXE discovering the box having been tampered with. I was also charged $99 for the repair as my console is out of warranty. I escalated the call to a supervisor, to no avail. He did say that they were aware of the problem but their hands were tied at the moment (whatever that means).

It only bricks if you tampered with the e-fuse (which is naturally blown during some earlier update in order to restrict downgrading the console to an exploitable kernel).
What a load of old ****; my machine which has operated FLAWLESSLY for 11 months (after the last one cooked itself JUST inside the 12 month warranty) just died DAYS after installing the NXE dashboard. Firstly Fable II began to freeze up, then Timeshift then the RROD began!
Now, I'm a scientist but I find it VERY odd that this happened almost immediately after this update as the correlation is so strong here and MANY others are reporting the SAME PROBLEM.
I bought a BRAND NEW Arcade console today and when I got home with it installed the NXE dash and...FABLE II FREEZES which NEVER happened with the original dashboard! Coincidence? I think not :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: :mad::mad::mad::mad:
