View Full Version : FIFA 09 is really wiping the floor with PES 2009 this year
FIFA 09 is really wiping the floor with PES 2009 this year if reviews of the game on the Xbox 360 are to be believed. Currently, FIFA 09 has a metacritic score of 88 while PES 2009 has a score of just 75. A lot of the review comments from gaming publications also draw on FIFA 09's superiority, and this one really says it all "PES 2009 is a good game, but the times they are changin', and we're afraid that Konami is being left behind. Time for a reboot, Seabass."

Seabass needs to start from scratch and make a proper next gen PES. This is the first ever PES game I won't be buying

The only thing FIFA has going for it is the vast amount of licenses. the game feels like the players are underwater. they're weightless and don't move naturally.
PES on the 360 feels like a slower PES than the one on the PS2 system. maybe they did that to make it more realistic or to help them with online play. PES plays much better than FIFA. it's more responsive and you feel tighter control over the player with the ball.
Any soccer fan should know by now that after playing PES on Wii its almost impossible to go back to playing it on a stardard controller. Wii PES has very crappy defensive control, it was mostly done with ai. the attack on the Wii feels like you have complete control over the entire team. no more sloppy passes to the wrong player.
this pretty much sums up what i believe about the current state of soccer sims.
FIFA
Like: licenses
Hate: floaty control, ai
PES (PS3, 360)
Like: control, animation, realistic feel and physics
Hate: ai, anemic amount on licenses
PES (Wii)
Like: total control offense
Hate: no control defense, ai, low resolution

Very good comparison, I agree with you. Just to throw this out, I think the best soccer game ever was Worldwide Soccer 98 on the Sega Saturn. It didn't have licensed leagues, but the physics engine and the playcontrol was unmatched, even by today's standards. I miss Sega games, although I think a few third parties helped developed it, like Eidos I think. I have to Wiki it later. Thanks for letting me reminisce.

Not meaning to sound like a FIFA fanboy but FIFA really did 'wipe the floor' wity PES2009.
I've played FIFA for quite some time and I still haven't got bored, however I got bored very easily with PES2009.

Fifa feels so laggy it's not even funny, how can you have a serious football match when the player passes 10 mins after you press the button?

I've never had 'lagg' with my FIFA.

Thats because FIFA is more realistic than PES. If your player hasn't got the right body shape, then you can't pass the ball that quickly.
How anyone can say 'realistic feel and physics' when talking about PES is beyond me. I played it for the first time a couple of days ago and I couldn't beleive what they have done to such a great series. The players move like they are on rails, you can't turn smoothly, every turn is very sharp and the ball looks like it is on elastic tied to the players foot.
I used to love PES but they are falling seriously behind this gen.

I've always been a PES player, since back in the PS1 days of ISS: Pro Evolution Soccer. Last year's PES was horrible. Totally unplayable, terrible presentation, and broken online gameplay. I traded it in for some other PS3 game, I forget what.
I've never like FIFA. FIFA08 was rubbish. Nice looking, decent presentation, but still rubbish to play. The fact that PES has a dull front end and pretty much no proper teams has never bothered me.
After playing the awful PES09 demo I decided to have a look at FIFA09 - I couldn't face being without a football game for another year. Put simply, FIFA09 wipes the floor with PES09. Yes, FIFA is slower than PES - but PES09 is ridiculously arcade-like and stupidly quick. PES09 is even more scripted and "on rails" than any previous PES. In FIFA you can, believe it or not, actually stop your man running towards a ball that you're never going to be able to control. In PES you're STILL shouting at the screen, wanting your man to stop, as he bundles it out for a corner (rather than leaving it and letting it go for a goal kick).
Once I got used to the "strangeness" of FIFA09 not being PES I liked the game. Sure, it's not perfect, but PES09 is far from perfect. It's all about what flaws you're prepared to put up with. I'm not prepared to put up with dated gameplay, broken online, and stupid Benny Hill chase scene speed of play.
Konami need to go right back to the drawing board with PES and start from scratch. Which, funnily enough, is what they promised they would do with 08... then 09.

I havent played any of the 09 series games yet so cant really comment.
What i will say is that i think you need to play the tutorial for PES as you can stop your player running. Its either LT or RT + RB.

Yep. I know this. But why should such a thing exist? It's like your car constantly accelarating in GT4 unless you hit two buttons to brake. Or Mario wandering off the edge of a cliff unless you whack a couple of buttons to stop him. Bad game design, put in place to artifically increase the game's difficulty.

Nobdy cares about crappy SOCCER games anyway, because anybody who plays SOCCER is a SUCKER.
Not you again?
Don't you have a life?
All you seem to be doing is getting yourself banned from this forum and creating new accounts.

If your posts weren't the same posts over and over again I might not comment.
I've seen another thread where your slamming 'Soccer'
For one, It's FIFA and is not expected to be released in USA
And for another when refering to FIFA could you refer to the sport as 'Football'.
But seriously,
You've been banned several times. You'd think you'd learn from the first few.
Not many people like you on this forum. Take the hint.

By calling it soccer you just shows that you are a sucker. It is called football because you are manly using you feets. Not like the American version were you use you hand more than you feet. Only a sucker would call that Football.

I have to say that the last FIFA game I bought was FIFA 98 for my Sega Saturn and since then I have been playing Konami's ISS or Pro Evo Soccer series but recently I have been disappointed by PES2008 and PES 2009 so I bought FIFA 09 yesterday.
EA have really set the standard and Pro Evo 2009 is pretty much what PES 2008 should have been last year. Even the PS3 version of PES 2009 looks ass and even if it had improvements, some of the animations look like robots and I just can't justify spending money on PES 2009. I played FIFA 09 and despite not being a fan of FIFA, I found the game to be superior in every way.
Oh and FIFA 09 is being released in America, it's called FIFA Soccer 09

Always preferred PES and I love the way it plays, but it nevers changes and FIFA continues to improve every time with more single and multiplayer modes. I can only see PES being left further behined unless Seabass pulls his finger out his ass.
Ps- get the premier league ffs.

I'm really pleased that FIFA09 is getting the praise this time around.
I've always associated PES fans as loving PES and hating FIFA even last year when FIFA 08 was better than PES. I still know plenty of people who are telling me FIFA 09 is crap and PES09 is better but in all honesty, I can't have a serious discussion with them.
FIFA is far from perfect but I'm enjoying 09 immensely.

I enjoyed the demo and am currently really enjoying the actual game.
And the retail PES2009 is the same as the demo.
Not meaning to sound like a FIFA fanboy but PES really has dropped it's quality this year, although I know people that say the opposite.

i'm a PES fanboy but i try fifa each and evry year 2 see how it plays. Last year i saw signs of improvement and this year fifa really did step up and throw down the gauntlet. PES hasn't delivered at all and hasn't moved forward since last year so i feel it is the right time 2 switch over. It is a fact that FIFA 09 is better that PES 2009
