With the recent observations from the xbox-linux project, it looks like its gonna take a looooooooooooooooong time. Nintendo did something similar and it took 4 years for a gc chip, and ms has gone even further. It is going to take a while.

It did not take that long really to hack a game cube (it was hacked on paper long before they made the chip), but for some reason nobody was interested in it, and still there's no big game cube scene.
Also if M$ did something similar (witch I don’t see anyway tough) it’s easier to do the same trick again to hack it.
Xbox360 will be hacked whit in a year, and I would be good laughing if they left some good holes in there software upgrading and emu installing software, you might not even need a mod.

No one really had a motive for nintendo stuff.. their games were cheap (least compared to sony/MS) and they have been in the business for a long time - plus their features/game lineup isn't all too great for anyone to pursue (most hacks have a bottom line of course). For Microsoft theres a huge audience - I mean almost everyone who plays games has played an xbox, my father who is completely game-irrevelant bought the hardware for movie playback. Plus there's a lot of experienced MS coders that could have access to some pinouts/schematics/block diagrams etc and may have a grudge to their employer, and of course there's a scene where being first gives you fame and recogintion around the world. Of course MS made it a challenge, they beefed up the security a lot, but as they said nothing is ever secure and people have access to a lot of very nice testing/dev equipment.
Personally a softmod will come before a hardmod IMO - they always do because anyone can dev, designing and implimenting hardware is a bit different.

* The flash is encrypted with a per-box key
* The key is stored inside the CPU
* The boot ROM is stored inside the CPU
* Also inside the CPU is a hypervisor that verifies the running state of the kernel, making sure there is no modification (RAM checksums), else the Xbox360 panics and blows up!
* The CPU contains RAM inside of it to store the checksums
* All interrupt/exception handling is done by the hypervisor
* All code runs in kernel mode
* The emulator for first generation games can be updated via an official Microsoft download burned to CD by the user, though the CDs' content will be encrypted and signed with public key cryptography.
From the xbox linux guys.

maybe there will be a streaming hack like with phantasy star online on the gc that didn't require modding but a modchip will be the best. I sure can't wait to see this hacked and a ps2 and gamecube emu ported to it. Btw would the 360 be able to handle a PS2 or a gamecube emu?

dont hold your breath. It will probably take years to crack the xbox 360. And if they succed in cracking one it doesnt mean it will work on the next one. different encryption keys on all Xbox's. Don't buy one if you expect a modchip in the first 2-3 years.

Well I think with everyones differing opions on this subject, we should do the following:
1.Set a competition for all to guess how long before a hack comes on the scene
2.The one who is closest .. well wins an Xbox360
I think from already reading on the real 60 site that a hack of some description will appear in 4 months one week and 3 days.
Why do I think this, well ................

360 will be playing back-ups before Xmas this year!!
Whether it is with or without a chip. ;)
I have a very strong feeling you will be needing the HDD add on though!

Is there even a working gamecube/ps2 emu to port? :o

Interesting. Ok I think that microsoft is scared now, because not only are modders getting better at it, they are releasing upgradable flash memory with it....so, I guess it would be under a year. I also have been keeping tracke of the real 60 site. Hmmmm, for an exact date I would have to say September 19th. 10 months, because you have to compensate for many things; one, family setbacks of modders :(; two, Christmas holidays :); three, financial situations; and four, other projects/work. <-- This is my guess for a hardmod. For softmod, I would agree with confused for about 4 months :D. We'll see.

well, the person who figures it out will likly want something for bottom line - so it will be a dealer hack or the chips will be out before softmod, IMO.
