View Full Version : Xbox-Linux: Free 60 Project Begins
The Xbox-Linux team have got to work on trying to port Linux to the Xbox 360, in a project named 'free 60'. The Free60 Project aims to port open source operating systems like GNU/Linux and Darwin to the Microsoft Xbox 360 gaming console.

Just bought one of the last XBOX360 here in my town and i would NOT expect a working mod-chip within the next 6-12 months. The protection used is - from what i understand and read - REALLY tight. And chips made for one xbox360 may not work on another one.
Face it: No chips within the next months, no xbox360 within the next weeks to buy anymore. The games are really good and a HD maybe helpfull to make a "hack" (maybe a streaming one).
I got word, that Call of Duty 2 has been hacked, but did not found any evidence nor instructions.
Well, i should play me GTR3 instead of searching for evidence :D

This, could be easily done.
All we would need is a program to connect the 360 to an XPPC via USB, and access the HDD through there. Then delete the security files and put a new file to accept the linux install disc. Then install Linux on your HDD and PRESTO!
Now, when I said easy, I meant that loosely. The hardest part would be getting rid of the security files on the HDD, then putting in a new file so it will boot a PC disc so you can run the Linux install CD.
I would help with this project, but alas, I suck at programming these new files. And therefore, I can do nothing but give suggestions.

there are no security files on the hdd(wel mabey there are) but the security is not only on the hdd, there in the whole harware. so if you would get rid of your security files, trow the damn super secure xbox360 of a ten floor building :D
Initial Xbox 360 File System Support
>> From free60.org:
[QUOTE]
There is now initial support for the Xbox 360 hardisk filesystem (XTAF) in CVS. This is a patch for the 2.4.32 Linux kernel.
Well, the Linux project going forward,
and what about HDD:
[QUOTE]
The harddisk is not locked in any way. A completely zero drive will only be read by the Xbox 360 if the relevent headers are in place on the disk.
A FATX partition exists on the drive
For a drive to be considered valid it must have the 'Plain text hard disk info' and MS logo PNG.
If these elements do not exist then no HDD is detected.
So there is no way for third parties to manufacture hard disks without a license or without infringing Microsoft's copyright. (The Gameboy used the same idea for cartridges.)
The 360's serial number is required when formatting a HDD.
Possible encryption of serial # into HDD info (256 bytes change from console to console)
The drive's capacity is reported as 13GB by the 360 immediately after formatting.

Or posssibly a music file with a virus taht attacks the BIOS to allow a read of an install CD? Or perhaps you play the music file and it will attack the BIOS then boot Linux off the drive?
