Is it safe to just backup wads to your SD card, instead of uninstalling them?

I feel that completely uninstalling them is too much of a hassle, but at the same time, I don't want to chance anything.

I just have copies of wads on my SD card and uninstall them.

I prefer uninstalling just on case of problems.
