Hey PSP Freaks
I ripped some of my UMD Video's and now i have a question:
Can i make a UMD Video ISO Smaller?!

Because almost every iso is 1.6Gb...
And a UMD is always better quality then a MP4/AVC.

Thanks for helping!

Sony won't release the codec, therefore you cannot do anything with umd video files but play them. You can't convert them or reencode them unless sony gives us the codec.

You cannot rip UMDVIDEO without loosing part of the movie and you cannot rencode it at all. But I have found a way how to try UMDVIDEO even if you have 256MB MS Duo. Read next or at my own PSP page (http://www.andrewsm.net/psp/umdmovierip_eng.htm) (it is all in Czech language, but I have translated this one article into English)

HERE IT IS:
With my metod, you can try UMDVIDEO using smaller MS Duo than a 2GB. Because every UMDMOVIE disc uses something between 1.6-1.8 GB of UMD capacity, you will NEVER HAVE WHOLE MOVIE, but you can at least try how sharp, nice, wonderful... is playing of UMDVIDEO on PSP (it is really a big difference between UMD and converted .mp4 video). So if you are going to buy UMDVIDEO in a shop, you can at first try it at home.

What do you need:

1. PSP with Firmware 1.50

2. UMD ISO Dump od Movie (some are at mininova)

3. Aplication CutOff - this will shorten one file (that contains video, read further) and thanks to this you can try UMDVIDEO using MS Duo 1GB, 512MB, 256MB...

4. Aplication UMDGen - this rebuilds ISO

5. MS Duo - it simply doesn't matter how big your MS Duo is, but length of movie depends on it. With 1GB you can see something about 2/3 or less of movie and with 512MB something about 1/3 and less. It is nonsence to try this with 32MB MS Duo, but it still has some purpose with 256MB.

6. UMD Emulator 0.8C - you will run ISO with it

Procedure step by step:

1. Extract Movie ISO at harddisk (using WinRAR for example)

2. In extracted files go to: UMD_VIDEO -> STREAM

3. In directory STREAM are several *.MPS files, we need movie, it is the biggest one (commonly 00001.MPS). Other *.MPS files are bonuses, trailers, menus...

4. Run CutOff and choose 00001.MPS. Now you have to cutoff enough data from 00001.MPS so all files would fit on your MS Duo. So if you have 1GB, 700 000 K would be enough. Type it into column "Cutoff size in K" and click on button Cut off. So now, all files should fit onto your MS Duo. If they don't, cut some more data ;-).

5. Now run UMDGen and put all data into root. I mean UMD_VIDEO a UMD_DATA.BIN (containing all subfolders and subfiles of course :-)) ).

http://www.andrewsm.net/psp/pics/objev/umdgen.jpg

6. Click on File -> Export ISO and new ISO file will be created.

7. Copy ISO file to MS Duo in directory X:\ISO

8. Run in PSP aplication UMD Emulator 0.8C. Set this (like in the picture):

>ISO emulation mode - system menu
>Disctype ISO - video
>Disctype UMD - game (if you have UMD Game in UMDDrive) or video surprisingly if you have UMD Movie in UMDDrive )
>Updater icon - remove
>Use boot.bin - on
>Region overdrive - on
>All "Regioncode ..." - regionfree

Choose ISO file and run it. Hooray, now you have at least part of UMD Movie!!!

PS.: Everything works fine, but if you will get to the part of movie which is missing PSP will freeze and you will have to restart it. You don't have to be scared of this procedure, it is in fact same as if your UMD would be scratched. But still I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES THIS PROCEDURE WOULD MADE!

great tool is it possiable to cut the start and credits of the file or is that to much. You can cut credits, but that is still not enough to fit on 1GB. I think that start cannot be cut, because it contains header (information about video - length, audio tracks, subtitle tracks etc.). This method is only for testing purpose. Maybe it would be possible to make two *.ISO files - one *.ISO with first part and second *.ISO with second part of the movie. Then you could change ISOs at home or change MS Duo if you would have two of them :D .

you could also use the apacer steno thing that allows you to transfer the split isos between them.

There seems to be an awful lot of praise for UMD video quality. Let me be the first to ground this: The quality of Spiderman 2 was unacceptible, even for a DVD. The MP4 compression is worse than a poorly encoded DiVX file on dark scenes. It's impossible for the viewer not to notice the blocky night sky with giant blocks appearing and dissapearing. Once again: A DVD for a similar blockbuster movie would *never* make it to the store shelf like that. If you DVD Shrink an big enough movie, you might see something similar but the PSP's is actually really bad. ;) Other than that, I've rented a few things and I can usually explain away problems by the source material (ie, South Park = originally interlaced TV content).
