View Full Version : New and controversial Wii backup loader released

Zeus

A brand new Wii backup loader has been released, although it comes not clear of controversy. Essentially, its built around Gecko OS and the author of the respective software wants to make it clear that it has absolutely nothing to do with him.

It has come to my attention that a coder who goes by the Nickname Wiigator has made an unofficial version of Gecko OS using some old GPL source code.

I just want to make it perfectly clear that I nothing to do with this release in any way, so please don't email me for support on this release.

Here is the precompiled .dol files with a tutorial ive found on forum around... post your result HERE ! i can't test it i have wiikey

Wii Backup Launcher 0.1:

*########################

Purpose *

Launch Wii DVD backups ########################

*
This is a source code only release. You need to
compile it using devkitpro (PPC + ARM).

Author *

WiiGator

*

Compiling Order (

Run "make" to compile):

1. extractpartition

2. dip_module

3. copy dip_module/bin/dip_module.elf to cios_installer/data/dip_module.elf

4. cios_installer

5. geckoos

* Create DVD *

To create DVDs you need extractpartition. Don't call this patching. It only
decrypts the DVD. Patching is done within GeckoOS.

1. Run extractpartition

2. Burn output file to DVD-R (raw iso)

*

* Installing *

1. cios_installer - if you get an error message like "-1017" then you need first to uninstall IOS249.

2. dvdx, choose IOS249
3. geckooscios_installer will install a custom IOS v6 which is same as Waninkokos cIOS v5.
You don't need to install it, if you already installed cIOS v5.

* Notes *
In this release there is no leaked code included. Only official code is used.

This is released by WiiGator.

The official released dip_module, IOS
patches and libcios are used. Other code from Waninkoko is not used!

Waninkoko
is not responsible for this release. Don't ask him about it.

The GeckoOS included is an unoffical release. It is based on GeckoOS 1.07.
PAL and NTSC is working.

GeckoOS can load both original and backup discs.

think partial code has been rewritten and this can force video modes and load times have been reduced

It works! I have an NTSC Wii. With Waninkoko's Loader, I couldn't get anything but a green screen, even when I patched games to PAL. This was able to load an NTSC game. It worked via component (480p) and composite (480i) as well. There was serious stuttering during FMVs, though.

I can say it works on NTSC wii. on a verbatim DVD-R using wanikoko's patching tool. Burnt at 4x speed. I hope to try faster speeds

Works great. I couldn't get Geometry Wars to work with AV cable using Waninoko's loader. Now it works perfectly with wiigator's loader :D

And since this is only v0.2, I can't wait to see this program advances. Now I won't have to install a modchip in my 2nd wii.

Go to Wiiso forums for a better nohow of this software. It is stated that Gecko OS(the os that wiiagtor based his launcher on) won't read discs burned faster than 3X speed. And another thing if it wasn't for the leaked version of Wanikoko's launcher (it was in beta stage) he would still be working on this project. Thank the guys at gbatemp. Can't wait to see the next firmware coming out soon since now there are source codes of this type floating around. Enjoy it while it lasts. Greedy pirate bastards. And I was just enjoying the break between updates.

reason why i want this to work even though i have a chip is . A. it doesnt load certain games that i see on the compatibility list for the loader that does, B. just to have both worlds C. cause I can't or don't know how or where to get it installed (a new chip)

I have a feeling this is Waninkoko using a different name. Kind of like how Dax used m33 team as a cover. Please Nintendo fix this so there will be no soft mod.

seems like the only ones really pissed about the softmod are the ones who already purchased a chip or are chip distributors, sellers ect....plus i really dont care i got 2 wii's 1 chipped the other isn't so i'm not worried at all :p

Damn that was a nightmare to get the info I needed to get this going.

Boom Blox gave a loading screen, but went black.
Then I got to the title screen, but it froze before the menu.
Normal?

Is it the Boot loader or the custom firmware that is going to eventually increase compatibility?

i tried no more heroes (on my ntsc wii) for the first time. the game is awesome, but the cut-scenes lag way too much. at times i thought the game froze. the gameplay is good. now that i know how good this game is, ill buy it.

I hope there will be a way to load backups with out custom firmware.
I dislike playing with firmware.

Why? To increase mod chip revenue? Fuk you buddy.

After playing 20 or so WII titles using the back up loader, its clear what a huge POS the WII is. The games suck. Nintendo should release their own back up loader to justify the price tag on this revamped game cube with a fancy controller.

id rather mess with the firmware than the motherboard. you know that one could use savemii to recover your wii, right? this loader is easy to use and its not hard to apply the patches to your wii. so really, you woulod have to try hard to install this wrong.

Wow stryker98 is an imbecile. An ill informed imbecile. The 3x limitation has nothing to do with the burn speed or any particular loader.

And his rant about piracy is funny. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks.

All cables that carry audio and video are "AV" cables. You mean with Phono (RCA) cables?

I like how no one really cares enough to post a link to the loader. This is exciting i just tested it out its a lot better I tried out tna impact long load times but it played flawlessly. Here is a link to everything you need even a gui for the backup creator.

Note two things if you already installed the old loader just put the new loader in the apps folder.
but if you haven't of course install dvd x set it to iso249 blah blah and cios all the folders are included in this rar

This of course is in beta stages but it workes 100 times better than waniko's

Note I did not make this so whoever here is your credit

Thanks Master101 much appreciated.

Just one question though, do I have to have the homebrew channel installed in order to install this ? And if so is there a way to install the homebrew channel without an original copy of zelda and the tp hack ?
If I dont have to use the homebrew channel or I do and there is a way to install it without the tp hack could you please point me in the right direction of a guide on how to do so.
I don't own a wii but plenty of my mates do and are interested in this, I fitted a chip for one a while ago but none of the rest want me to take there machines apart.

Thanks. :)

well thats great modchips are always the way to go. Unfortunately I don't know of any other method then the twighlight hack which installs the homebrew channel which is required to run this app. If you mates have a wii chances are they have zelda and even if they don't you can always rent it

I installed this on a none modded Wii, so far every game i have tried has worked. I am burning on Ritek DVD's at 4x. For anyone still having problems installing this, i found this guide, not sure who the original author is, but all credit to them as i just copied and pasted it:

Guide:

Part 1: Preparing the Loader

1. Configure your SD card for homebrew. Learn about some of the basic concepts and most used programs in using homebrew, such as the Twilight Hack and the Homebrew Channel. Learn more here.

2. Rename the dvd-backup.dol file to boot.dol and create a folder titled "Loader". Place the .dol in the folder. Find some graphic/xml files to fill in for now, or make your own.

3. Place the CIOS36_rev5-64-v1042.wad file in the wad directory of your SD card.

4. Place the backup loader files (boot.dol, icon.png, meta.xml) in the Loader folder, and put the Loader folder in the apps folder on your SD Card.

5. Place the DVDX installer in a folder titled "DVDX" (without quotes) and put that in the apps folder on your SD card.

6. Place the WAD manager folder in your apps folder on your SD card.

7. Boot the Homebrew channel.

Part 2: Wii Setup. Only do these steps ONCE.

1. Install cIOS via the WAD Manager.

2. Install DVDX. If you have the option to Uninstall on the menu, DO THAT FIRST.

3. Navigate in the menu to "Advanced". Press Left or Right on the Wii remote until you get to IOS249. Install it.

Now you are ready to get some games and play them on your Wii.

Part 3:
Getting and Playing games on Your Wii

1. Find an ISO and download it.

2. Patch the game ISO. Put the ISO in the same directory of the backup-creator with the common-key file, Right Click the ISO, and select Open With. Find the backup creator and select it.

3. Wait for this process to be done, and then burn the newly created file to a DVD (recommendation: Verbatim DVD-R) using the free ImgBurn.

4. Put your disc in the Wii. Boot up your Wii and load the Backup Loader from the Homebrew Channel.

slaphappygamer

when its said "find an iso and download it". it think he means to create an archive iso of a game you already have. ;)

So this will work with the standard AV cable (composite I beleive its called)?

Is it true you need an LG-816xb drive (where x is 1-4, ex LG-8164b)?

Do you need the homebrew channel or CIOS? Are they safe (will they void the warranty)?

Are dol files like PBPs for PSP, like on PSP you have /psp/game/whatever/ebboot.pbp and on wii you have apps/whatever/boot.dol?

I use the twilight hack to load wii homebrew loader I beleive, but my wii always freezes, should i install the homebrew channel?

Also I am confused, for the bootloader above in the there is a channel version folder with a a file called hb-backuploader.dol.wad and an apps folder with a dol, xml, and icon.

Do I install the WAD or run the app?

Heyup!

You would need to install the Twilight Hack to get the Homebrew Channel - but it is very much worth it!

PM me if you wish and I can help further :)
