I was looking on this forum the other day trying to find out the best way to backup WII games, there are many threads about using the LG drive and others, and I was going to go out and buy an expensive LG drive to do my backups.... that is before I stumbled across this thread at Nintendo-Scene. I have included the text below for info but if you want to read the whole thread then follow this link: http://forums.nintendo-scene.com/index.php?topic=2415.0

I have nothing to do with this tutorial other than post here. All credit for this tutorial should go to WB3000 of ninteno-scene.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This tutorial will show you how to backup your Wii or GameCube games to your computer over your wireless network at home. As long as you have the Homebrew Channel installed, this will work on any Wii, even those without a modchip.

What you need:

Wii/GCN Wifi Backup Apps Package (V3)
Changes in V3: Updated Custom IOS installer (Rev3) and uninstaller (v1.1)

For this tutorial, I have packed up all of the homebrew applications you need. The following are included in the archive:

•Custom IOS249 Rev3 Installer (Waninkoko)
•Custom IOS249 Uninstaller v1.1(Waninkoko)
•WiiHTTP Dumper (Nitrotux & Caitsith2)

Note: In order to install the Custom IOS249, you need to have a copy of the IOS37, known as "IOS37-64-v2070.wad", in the root of your SD card. While this a free firmware update, and may already be present on your Wii, it contains Nintendo's copyrighted code and therefore cannot be included in the package.

Setup:

* * * Installing the Custom IOS249 * * *

The Custom IOS249 is a special firmware patch of the IOS37, which allows homebrew to access the entire contents of a DVD in the Wii drive, versus only a small portion. If you have a modchip, other homebrew programs could use this to access anything on a DVD-R. If you are without a modchip, this tutorial will still work, as the games you will backup are stamped factory-made games.

•First, place the three Wii homebrew applications into your 'apps' folder in your SD card. Take a copy of the "IOS37-64-v2070.wad" and place it in the root of your SD card.

•Fire up the Homebrew Channel, and run the Custom IOS249 Installer. It should only take a few seconds before the IOS is installed.

The output should look something like this:

| Custom IOS Installer (v1 rev3) |

>> Otherwise, press B button to restart your Wii

* * * Running the WiiHTTP Dumper * * *

This program acts as a server on your Wii, and hosts a webpage which will allow you to access the disk drive. Using the Custom IOS249's unlimited drive reading, it will send your disk images directly to your PC from your web browser.

•Now return to the Homebrew Channel, and launch the WiiHTTP Dumper. Once it loads, it will connect to your network, and display the IP address of the Wii. Make sure you have the game disc inserted that you wish to dump!

A successful output will look something like this:

QuoteWiihttpd Webserver v0.0.1
Successfully loaded Custom IOS249. Disk dumping options enabled.
To exit, press A or press the reset button.
Waiting for network to initialise...
Network initialised. Wii IP address: Your Wii IP will be here

Listening on TCP port 80...

•Memorize the IP address, and open up your internet browser (I recommend Firefox for this). Type the IP into the address bar, and load it. Right away, a simple webpage should appear, listing 3 links. They are links to either a Single Layer ISO, Double Layer IOS, or GameCube ISO. Select the one which applies to your game. The only game out there needing Double Layer support is Super Smash Bros: Brawl.

Note: My Wii's local address is 192.168.11.4. You will need to use your own address that is given to yours.

•You should be prompted to download an ISO file. Accept the download and wait for it to finish. Back on your Wii, you will see a couple chunks of HTTP headers. This is normal, the first is when you loaded the webpage with links, and the second is when you requested the ISO.
•Wii ISOs may take 2 or 3 hours, but this is a much faster way than dumping to SD. You should be getting speeds of 400-500 KB per second.
•Repeat the following as necessary until you are finished backing up all your games!

* * * OPTIONAL: Removing the IOS249 * * *

After you are done backing up your games, you might be interested in removing the IOS249 from your Wii. While it is doing no harm staying there, Nintendo might think otherwise in a future update. If you plan on never using it again, or at least not in the near future, run the Custom IOS249 Uninstaller from the Homebrew Channel. It can be installed again at any time.

All of the instructions in this guide have been checked over for errors. There is still no guarantee as to whether this will work or not, especially in future firmware updates (post 3.3). If you don't feel up to performing this tutorial, then do not do it. I nor anyone here will take responsibility for any damages done to your Wii or anything else by this tutorial.

Backups have been reported to be taking approx 3 hours to complete. As i understand it, making your own backups takes this long whatever method of backup you choose.

well it actually takes 2.5 hours at 500 kb/s this is still quite fast considering that the file is 4.37GB

that's pretty good speeds...
I wonder if it would work with a LAN line and if that would be faster than Wireless...

The speed of transfer is to do with the DVD read speed, so it will make no difference if you use a LAN cable over wireless.

You are probably running into the 2GB file size limit on FAT32 partitions. For files larger than 2GB, you need to have NTFS. Or, you can split the file into smaller pieces.
