What you talkin bout MS? Gamer forced to change 'The Gooch' Gamertag

An Xbox 360 owner and Live subscriber is currently at a lost as to why MS is forcing him to change his gamer tag of "The Gooch". The gamer can not see anything wrong with his gamertag and it was inspired from the show called Different Strokes. Gary Coleman (Arnold) was always bullied in the show by "The Gooch", and this is why the gamer can not see why it is offensive in any way.

I got a message that I had to change it. I called 1-800-4-MY-XBOX (which, as of late, has been increasingly useless) and they told me that either a player(s) found my gamertag offensive or I violated the terms of use. I asked the representative to tell me what was offensive about it and she couldn't tell me. I then asked to point out what, in the terms of use, did I violate. She then said that they couldn't tell me because they didn't have the information available. The only thing that she could tell me was to come here and ask on the forum and that someone on the support staff would post back within an hour. Now, for anyone reading this post, I'll tell you the EXACT place where I got my gamertag; back in the '80s, there was this little known show called Diff'rent Strokes. Arnold (Gary Coleman) was always bullied at school by a guy that you never saw called who? THE GOOCH! What's offensive about that?! Please someone tell me because I'm about ready to cancel my XBox Live! subscription and by myself a Playstation 3 and wait for something good to come out for it.

My gamertag is SaTaNiK1 and I have not been told to change my tag yet:D I hardly ever play my 360 online so they must not have noticed me yet.:p

I just wish I could change my online gamertag for the PS3 whenever I want like I have been told they can in Japan to SaTaNiK1.

You know this is the first time I've seen that point brought up, and you are soooooooooo right. Seems to me they are specially touchy about sexually themed names, well how they didn't seem to have problems with the famous mass effect scenes (even if people were taking things way out of proportion in just how explicit they were), and we won't even touch the blood and gore part.

One reason though, is that those games are appropriately rated (mature, teen, etc), but on live there's just no way to stop little timmy from seeing the screen name "alienfokker" or something along those lines, but still it does seem hypocritical.

They send you a email explaining why they do it, and you can ask the mod that did it and he will tell you with in a few HRs why. I got ban because my profile said suck my balls spelled all crazy. But the mod sent me a message and unbanned me after i cleaned it up. I think this is not news and should not me posted here. We all know you hate MS and dig and dig for dirt. I see names like fKNiGGers and Killlllfagssssss on the PS3 all the time and get sick of that crap. I think MS is doing a great job of keeping live safe and fun place. Because when your on live and playing online you use your live name and ALL see it. In games you are the only one seeing and hearing it. They are not even close to the same thing. It is not hypocritical in any way!

I am not disagreeing with you but I think Sony makes a damn good effort to let you use the PS3 the way you want to. That is why they even let you install Linux. I am glad they don't go around baby sitting the gamertags for offensive material.

cant they rate the names so that if timmy logs in with a parental control he sees ****** as the name rather than ASSFAGS or whatever. better yet rate the user so that even if his name apears as ****** he cant use his headset to shout out profanities to timmy since they wont even join the same game.

Having said that, it does seem a bit harsh to ban this. Having said that though, M$ are after that 'family orientated' console so having a clean image by getting rid of all offensive, if even slightly, material, maybe something they are doing.

Damn brats shouldn't be playing in public rooms if you ask me. If you are 16 or younger you should only be able to play with people you actually know. Meaning they would have to be on your friend list in order for you to play with/against them.

I would say that US society tries so hard to shield kids from anything that's wrong that they grow up to be incompetent fools, but if they really tried so hard to shield kids from all the wrongs of the world, they would have banned the morning, afternoon, and night newscasts..... if you wanna see humankind at its worst, just watch any of them.

Have you tried to install linux it comes on after a 4 hr install then runs like a PC made 10 years ago. :confused: They do not have the ram or let linux use the GPU It sucks on a PS3.

Ya a broswer that will not work with 80% of web sites. Most linux installers for the PS3 will not let you use .deb packs what ever installer that distro uses. So you can not use flash or java.

well considering that the PS3 xmb has a vey capable browser catered to the pad which includes flash and i think java why are we discussing browsers when refering to linux just because you find no use for it doesnt mean others havent.

Linux on PS3 was just a marketing tool. I has not real use and never will. It will run like a pc that's 10 years old, in tell Sony lets us use the full video and ram its junk. Im sorry i said some negative thing about your PS3 that all you hard core fans love so much. But its not the bad ass system sony makes you all think it is. Some day it might be but by then even Nintendo will pass them up.:p

You're right, more than an iso loader I wish someone would find a way to make this happen, or even better yet for sony themselves to allow it. I mean it's not like I'm going to pack up all my pcs if the ps3 gets full hardware access in linux, but I just know that the more knowledgeable folk out there will be inspired to make some nices apps for the ps3 under linux, and the linux as a whole would show more support for it as well. A ps3 specific version of linux would be really awesome, I mean we have yellow dog sure, but I'm talking about something made just for the ps3. A kernel optimized with only the ps3's hardware, and nothing else.
