View Full Version : EA on NHL 09 disc read error: Clear your cache
It seems as if clearing your cache is the temporary solution to every game bug on the Xbox 360. Many users have been complaining that NHL 09 is freezing up in the main menu due to a 'disc read error', and there are currently over 10 pages of complaints at the official EA forums. EA has responded on the matter at their blog by stating to the 'RARE few that have it', just go ahead and clear your cache.
Hello Everyone!
I hope you all are enjoying NHL 09! We've received some reports of Disc Read Errors on the XBOX 360 console. I wanted to give you guys a solution to this issue if you are one of the rare few who have it.
Please clear your cache. To do this, you must go to the final blade on the XBOX 360 dashboard and select "memory." Then please press the "Y" button. Then you need to press the following button combination:
X,X,LB,RB,X,X
I hope this helps!

Doesn't this combo clear other items as well, such as download game updates or something similar?
Too many games suggesting to clear the cache lately...
Before you all rush to do your spring cache cleaning be warned that Microsoft does not support users that proceed with a clear cache on their own initiative. This feature, claims MS, should only be used as part of official technical support. Using this feature will not damage your console but we can now confirm that any game updates you have will disappear and will have to be downloaded again.

Umm...
SO what your saying is that everytime someone clears their cache they have to redownload all thier game updates??
You do understand the cache shouldnt be more then 1Gb right??? maybe 2 at most.
The cache is used for the temporary loading of things that 1 specific game is using. It holds preloaded textures, maps etc....
With halo 1 and 2 you have to clear the cache everytime before/after you loaded certain texture heavy mods.
I never lost an update.
You save files and update files and arcade and whatever... Are save don a completely different part of your harddrive.
It sound sto me like for being some super gaming machine, MS skimped on the Buffer size and made the cache size to high

u seen that he was actually quoting m$ tho right?
"Press Y on the HD symbol and then press X,X,Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X. Once you do this a messsage will appear saying: Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?
Performing this function will also clear any software updates."

well it all depends on how this "cache" is really being used i guess... supposedly it also fixes issues people are having with the new star wars game as well. i myself havnt had a single dde or any type of freeze with my legit retail nhl 09 disc so i dont know what the real underlying problem is.

Wow.. See. That doesnt make any sense to me.
Unless they didnt optimize the cache at all and it uses the entire harddrive.
Why.. if they could place each individual game update on Xbox1 in that games saves folder with a new redirected Xbe file.. why in the hell cant they do it with 360?
The cache on the xbox 1, no matter what size harddrive you have, for games it is 1Gb (i think) and as much as you want for movies and music if you set it. I have seen Half life 2 maps, halo 1 mods and all kinds of temporary textures and lod type files, but nothing important, and it gets deleted everytime you load a new game
A cache is supposed to be that, Temporary. its never meant to be permanent... so why are the game updates stored their??
Thats like updating windows with a 1Gb service pack, then after a week you clear your temporary files then have to reinstall the 4 hour update.

This seems like a universal tonic for new Xbox 360 games that don't work right off the bat... this isn't a good thing.

lol at all these PS3 people posting. They probably don't even play this game on any system. I played this a pile already for the 360 and it has worked excellent.

No one gives a **** that it works for you! If heaps of ppl are posting on EA forum reporting this problem, it obviously aren't working for a lot of ppl.

10 pages of people posting problems about a game that will sell a million copies would qualify as rare. EA is correct. It's not "heaps" of people.

Yes, because every single person that experiences the problem posts on the forums  . Most people just google a problem and look at the solution, not add worthless spam to something that already has a solution.
*This post was just encase you were actually being serious, in which case, I pity you.

Considering the announcement I found was from 2006, I thought it worth asking about (which I did, providing the quote as evidence of why I was asking it in the first place) - it may have been something that was corrected in dashboard updates between now and then but isn't mentioned anywhere I can find (yeah, as if they release any real sort of changelog with their dash updates.)
Can you confirm that downloaded updates are not erased with any authority? I might clear my cache for the fun of it to find out, but going through my disks to figure out which ones need updates each time I do it isn't something I'm interested in even though I suspect some of the pop ins and jerky graphics I've been getting lately are due to a dirty cache.

In all honesty it sounds like fragmentation is the issue, I mean, if windows xp is any indication just installing MSN with their crappy file share folders not too long ago created a hidden system file (USN JRNL) on my pc close to 2GiB in size and fragmented into over 5000 parts - on a recently defragged drive. Nope, M$ has not conquered fragmentation by a long shot.
I love the games, I just wish someone other than M$ was responsible for the the hardware.

wow....this thing really works! It would load and start fine.....up to where I put my first/last name, after that.would say 'loading' and after a min or so...would say sum'n like "disc is unrecognizeable, dirty, or something like that' . I applied the combination of buttons mentioned above, and it worked like a charm da first x.
oh and it was on my 'back-up' since EBgames borrow my game for display purposes :D
