Xbox 360 outsells PS3 in USA last month, Madden 09 sells over 1.5 million

The NPD results for the month of August reveal that of course the Wii and DS blitzed the competition, but also reveal the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 in August in America. The Xbox 360 sold 192,000 units compared to 185,400 units of the PS3. The Wii outsold both systems combined with 453,000 units combined and the PSP trailed the DS selling 253,000 units compared to 518,300 units. And so we move to software, Madden NFL 09 has sold 1 million for the Xbox 360, 643,000 copies on the PS3 and 424,500 units on the PS2.


U.S. sales of video game hardware, software, and accessories totaled $1.08 billion in August with software sales growing 13 percent and hardware sales rising 3 percent, NPD said.

Helped by a steady flow of blockbuster titles, the video game industry has proved resilient to the economic hardships hitting other industries. August's sales increase, however, is the first rise below 10 percent in 27 months, NPD said.

NPD analyst Anita Frazier expects hardware sales to continue to grow due in part to Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) decision to cut prices for its Xbox 360 game console last week. It lowered the price of the entry-level Xbox 360 Arcade, which comes without a hard drive, to $199.

I find it interesting that madden sold roughly 400,000 copies more on the 360 than and the ps3, taking into consideration the gap in installed user bases between the 2. Not that I think that ps3 owners buying, on average apparently, more EA games is a good thing for the console.

Well wait until next months figures come out. Id expect sony to announce a price cut 1 day after those numbers get released.

I own madden 07 and 08 and im not buying 09. I love football but after a month of playing madden you have to wonder whats worth 60 extra dollars? Then you figure out its basically the same game with a roster update and 1 or 2 new movement features.

that's not including North America. But what is odd is how bad ps3 did in japan :eek:. Everyone knows that japan hates microsoft. But ps3 only sold 7,000 last week while wii was like 33,000 :eek:

But when they add NA numbers it will be good to be able to compare last monstha sales to this month. I really dont care about week to week. Month to month gives a better idea id sales are a fluke or real. 1 good week could be based off a great gaming coming out.

I really dont care about week to week, month to month or year to year. I just buy the games on both consoles that I like.

I think that these numbers are very good for PS3, because in August there was xbox360 20GB price cut and PS3 was also shortage for 2 weeks.

If the next month PS3 and Xbox 360 numbers are still close, after xbox360 60GB price cut + people wait for PS3 October bundle (Little Big Planet bundle - Motorstorm 2 bundle - Resistance 2 bundle, all released in October for $399 with game included), I think that xbox360 is in bad water for these holidays.
