Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox 360's play from hard drive feature coming up in the big Fall update will be compatible with EVERY game. That means you can install any game that has ever shipped and any game that will ship - essentially every single game!

"[The hard drive install feature] will allow you to install any game that you want. It's optional, of course," said Xbox Live general manager Marc Whitten. "You can [install] any game that ever shipped, any game that will ship... every game."

Is this supposed to be like the PS3 and cache file data so load times are shortened or what?

I was under the impression the entire game data was transferred to the hard drive. The system does a disc check to ensure it is valid. At that point, the game is booted from the hard drive with the only disc access to verify it is legit. That's what I've been reading would happen anyway. Is this wrong?

waste of time.. YEY ITS RUNNING OFF HDD BUT I STILL NEED THE DISK!...

you don't REALLY need the disk, it's just a cheap way of stopping you copying and selling your disk games..

waste of time.

No, not wrong. From what little I've heard so far, they are doing some kind of disc emulation which will require ~7.1G/disk (regardless of game data size) install plus the original in the drive to verify ownership.

In a nut shell ... It can run ISO's from HDD now.

The disc is used for nothing more than to verify that you still have the game in your possession. This way you can not borrow friends games or rent them or copy to disc.

looking forward to the mod scene after the dashboard update.

its a coold feature, you have to get up to change games anyway so big fucking deal you still have to put the disc in, you are stupid to think they would just allow you to install it and be done without the craziest drm ever invented.

itll probably be ONE second faster, most likely not noticable, and i guess a little quiter (my 2006 fan still sounds like a 757 sometimes).

but honestly if you dont like the sound get a better surround sound system and turn the volume up, end of story

will this work with the original xbox games too or just 360 games?

This is just a gimmick to get 20/60 gig pro owners to upgrade to the 120gig.

The dvd drive on the 360 is atrocious, probably one of the loudest. A hd copy feature would have been great.

So you get 7/8 gigs taken out of your HD and you still have that annoying loud dvd drive sound.

Again, this is just a gimmick to get 360 owners to upgrade.

heh.. I'm glad I finally decided to mod my drive with iXtreme 1.4 firmware 8x speed... dvd-drive sure sounds quieter and will live a somewhat longer life than when its always running at its usual 12x speed(killin the servo quicker)..

the fall update could possibly make hacking the Lite On drive much easier if hackers can find away to boot the ISO's direct from harddrive without the need of having a disc in the dvd drive.

Neighbors tend to disagree with such sentiments... and an additional $250K investment (home where there are no neighbors handy) shouldn't be necessary to play a game so you can hear it. I'd suggest one to use headphones, but the RCA's on many of the 360's cables don't match headphones well enough to have no hum.

If it is a multi-disc game like Blue Dragon will you need to swap discs or will you only need one of the discs in the drive and if so, which one? If it only requires one of the discs for verification then hopefully you can install disc 2 and 3 and just keep disc 1 in the drive whenever you want to play it.

thats what im hoping (but in my case, its lost odyssey). if not, no big deal to get up every few hours and change it

Your right, it would have been MUCH smarter for M$ to let people buy 1 game, pass it onto your friends, and resell it. Or just rent the game and never have to buy again!!!

/Sarcasm off

The game only spins on bootup to verify the original copy, then turns off to continue ONLY from HDD. And if you haven't heard:

Hard drives read fast than any retail disks available.

No sound from drive, faster loading, smoother frames... You are the waste of time my friend.

& of course a cooler running xbox360 even though the hard drive blocks the top air intake vents & if positioning the console vertically this will mean all air intake vents are blocked (what a crappy designed console).

First thing I did... my friends PRO console (w/ intercooler bc he is afraid of getting RRoD again lol) sounds like a jet engine (no exaggeration) compared to my Elite at 8x:p

Framerate has nothing to do with the speed the data is read off the disk, except for games which stream it, and even for games that do, that code was OPTIMIZED FOR THE DISK BASED LOADING SYSTEM, just because it's reading off a hdd instead of a dvd doesn't mean it's magically going to have better framerates and less popup.

hmm... doesn't the intercooler kill the 360 even quicker?? I remember using one of those dreaded intercooler's once.. and it gave my 360 a "short", and right after I had RRoD.. woohoo!!

Well Its A Sneaky Way in the future to make games needing More space Hence bigger Hdd
so the need for everyone with a 20gb will have to upgrade to 60 or 120 gb
or if you have a 20gb and the games stay the same Size you will only be limited to 1 or 2 games at max unless you delete and delete
just another way to be F@@ked from behind by Microsoft

(unless MS (cough cough) Want to swap all us with 20gb's with bigger drives for free then we may go out and buy more games for the drive lol)(or DL more)

Maybe Oblivion would be playable now.
Waiting a Minute+ to enter town is NOT acceptable.

This just shows how much of an idiot you are. The lite on drive will never be hacked in a way that firmware can be flashed back to the drive, the chip on the drive is very clever and i would suggest you read xboxhacker for more info.

At present you can retrieve the key from the Lite On but you need to spoof another drive with the key.

Don't tell me, you unplugged the intercooler while the machine was on....
I have had one on my XBOX360 since 3 weeks after i bought it, since that day, never crashes, i took the intercooler off, just to see if it does make any difference and oh yes, me Console crashed within a Hour, had to reset and start it again, but with intercooler back on, has not crashed again since, and yes this is my first XBOX360, still going strong...........
