View Full Version : Xbox 1 left on for four days, burns down a house
A report from Everything Machine states that an Xbox (we think Xbox 1 as the article then goes onto mention an Xbox 360 which burned down a house in April) which was left on for FOUR days managed to spark off a huge house fire. The machine as it was left on for so long overheated and this set a nearby spiral notebook on fire and the rest was history...
When the smoke cleared, firefighters traced the cause of the fire to a recreation room off the basement where the Xbox sat.
Investigators concluded the Xbox -- which may have been on as long as four days -- had overheated and set a nearby spiral notebook on fire.
In the days since the Aug. 25 fire, the family has faced one problem after another.
Unable to return to their apartment or continue paying the cost of a hotel, the family is now living in a trailer at an Otisville campground.
And Walter's insurance company informed her that her coverage will pay only to fix the business and won't replace personal possessions ruined by smoke.
All because of an Xbox that Walter had never given much more than a passing thought.

of course i'm glad when these types of accidents turn out that no one was hurt.
however, i'd like to see the reports when it's stated that a console overheated and did this. and here's why.
ambient temperatures in my room alone reach anywhere from 10-15d (F) OVER what the outside temperature is.temps lately have been in the high 90s. yesterday alone was 99.
summer temps are usually 110-112 outside
in my room
xbox 360
xbox (generation 1)
32" Sony big stupid huge tv
pc
i never turn off any of my equipment except for maintenance once a week. clean out dust, etc.
or if i'm going to not have time for a few days, but i have never experienced an over heating issue.
leads me to beleive that stories like this have OTHER causes besides the console alone, or that the investigators point at the first thing people might beleive.

I agree with guy above.
I have one of my launch xboxes in a **** browken ass PC case that is open at all times.
My pc and server run at a constant 125F and my xbox is at about 120F.
My PC and servers ar eon all day long 6 days a week. My xbox is on for at least 12 hours a day running info, watching movies etc...
I think its an issue of overheating or just plain out not taking care of their stuff

MS should have installed some thermal fuses in the thing.
Hell most manufacturers should (laptops, DVD players, consoles) because people leave those things on forever. Most people see it as just another appliance.
....and for the companies that do install them 'well done"

funny thing is microsoft is not liable for this at all.. not only to begin with, but also because they offered the new gfci dongle for xbox or whatever....
this person obiously did not pay attention to this issue 3 years ago when it was discovered..
this isnt new by any means either there have been xbox fires numerous times as people tend to wiggle the power plug on the back breaking the connectors causing sparks :o

The article begins with "In the seven years since her 22-year-old son brought it home, her three children had used the squat black console to play video games, watch movies and listen to music" So it clearly is an Xbox1.
It also says "A fire official said the notebook appeared to be blocking the vents on the Xbox". No wonder it overheats.
And BTW, the Xbox is designed to shut off by itself when it reaches a certain temperature.

Every electronic equipment with a CPU chip shuts off when it reaches a certain temperature, however GPUs and other components of it do not do the same. The whole reason for the auto shutdown in the CPU is to prevent the chip from burning out, not preventing house fires.

I think that this is xbox360 and no xbox 1.
Xbox 1 was more reliable. Instead xbox360 is only a disaster.
