View Full Version : Dead GPU?

Had a drive with a completely borked ribbon connector so replaced it but had to bridge wires to most of the pads.
Everything looked fine but the drive just kept trying to load/eject, so I removed the laser assembly and fitted another to eliminate that.
Same result with 2nd laser so I removed the drive.
Put the original assembly back on as this was obviously not the problem and put it back on my wii.
This time it didn't switch on. It powers up but won't sync with the Wiimotes or give the "Press A" screen.
TV flickers so there's something there but that's it, it stays black screen.
Anyone any ideas? :(

did you make sure that you removed ALL static electricity from yourself before you started?

That's where static straps would come in handy. ;)

Course :-P
Don't think it's caused by static but I just can't figure out if it's a blown gpu or a dead fuse/fuseable link.
Basically the unit fires up, with or without a drive in. If you turn on a wii and watch the screen is black, then it flickers and then up pops the "Press A" prompt. I get the flicker and it's outputting something as the AV symbol for my TV goes off but just a black screen. No wiimote connection, no on screen image.

I recently spotted a post by Bushing on the TeHSkeen forums saying that this can also be caused if you dislodged the Bluetooth OR WiFi modules when you had it in bits... It's probably worth checking out.

I'll try that tonight. Funnily enough my logic had gone earlier to wondering if I had damaged the bluetooth controller hence it doesn't initialise. Now I have another unit I can at least try a parts swap.
Hope it works and will post later if it does or doesnt. Any other ideas guys I'm fully open to all suggestions, especially if anyone knows of any kind of pre-boot fuse or link.

so far no further forward but you describe the same scenario.
Changed wireless and BT modules but no effect.
Can you describe what you did or were doing when your wii decided to stop outputting a display as it might help lead us down a line to repair this.

Again leading me to think some kind of fuseable item has blown and stopped the boot cycle progressing.
If only I could find out what though :(
