Bungie beat off Nintendo and Rockstar to win the Edge award for Interactive Innovation for Halo 3. A number of high profile titles including GTA IV, Rock Band and Wii Fit were shortlisted but Halo 3 walked away with the award due to its 'integration and coherence' of its online content.

At the Edinburgh Interactive Festival today, Bungie beat competitors such as Nintendo and Rockstar to win the Edge Award For Interactive Innovation for Halo 3.

We hand out this accolade to the title released in the last 12 months that does most to further the creative culture of gaming – in other words, to mark out new directions for the form.

This year’s Edge Award For Interactive Innovation was a closely fought affair, Bungie proving victorious in a shortlist that also included Grand Theft Auto IV, Portal, Rock Band, Super Mario Galaxy and Wii Fit.

Ultimately it is the integration and coherence of Halo 3’s online content that makes the game stand apart. From its Theater mode to Forge, and the way a party playing through Live can seamlessly manoeuvre between them, here is an experience that demonstrates an unparalleled understanding of the potential for console online play. Outside of the game, Bungie.net has been engineered to become a remarkable resource for Halo 3 stats and communities, providing life for the game even when your Xbox 360 is switched off. Halo 3, just as Halo 2 did before it, presents a roadmap for the way online will be integrated in videogames in the coming years.

That's bullshit. Halo 3 is just a compilation of ideas borrowed from other first person shooters - mostly from Halo 1/2 infact.

It saddens me to see such typical titles gain "innovation" awards when frankly its "been there done that" type of gaming (imho).

Ok even WiiFit deserves it more than Halo 2.5, but we all know the real winner is Portal so they can screw off with their lame award (do they get and MS funding?). Even Rock Band should get a nod.....this is just corporate BS.
Seriously Halo 3 was ok, but it did not live up to the hype.

Walk up to the average gamer and call Halo 3 "innovative". If they don't start laughing hysterically, you have correctly identified an idiot with just one statement.

Halo THREE. There's a clue about just how innovative it is right there in the title..

YUP! BUT THERE'S MORE TO BE SAID!

Definition of innovation:

In every way all of this has been done before. Nintendo is the one company who has done something so radical and has come out on top. Halo is hype this proves it! Nintendo obviously should have won! I'm outraged! This game should have fell off the charts a long time ago but Microsoft keeps perpetuating and brain feeding people that it's the mecca of fps.

Thanks for letting me know that Edge is full of paid off poodles. This is why game magazine sales are tanking. Why spend hard earned cash just to be fed a bunch of bs. They hype trash to the highest bidder and then when the game comes out they give it a 1/10 and denounce the readers for thinking the game would be good. That is of course after the game is released, so all of the suckers waste their cash on it.

F U Edge. I cant wait for all those other poodle print magazines to run out of circulation.

Halo 3 online is bad ass and is the most online played game on the planet although I don't think it should get an innovation award; maybe something like portal or Braid...

OK obviously I share everyone's sentiment on this. True I'm not exactly the most supportive of people when it comes to Halo, but I can admit it has a few things going for it..... but innovation???? Hey I don't like the wii very much, but as crappy as it might be there's nothing that can touch the wii on innovation,I would like to see sony actually do something worthwhile with the PS3 Eye though. Frankly it seems like they took the most generic of games for this award. Let's see GTA (HUH?), Portal (That was kinda new), Rockband (this is pretty old by now), Super Mario Galaxy (Didn't look innovative to me)? Hell even wiifit is just a really evolved Track n' Field (NES). They could have given it to any other game and it would still be somewhat stupid, IMHO, but Halo? Are they assuming that sales = innovations or something like that?

So did any one of you sheep above read the quote from the article in the OP?? get over the fact that you all hate halo3 and understand the reason why the GD award was given......"for the way online will be integrated in videogames in the coming years"....go to bungie.net and have a look at all the stats available and the total hours played in every mode....then come back and show me what other game has that depth and i will shut my mouth

it has nothing to do with gameplay or genre it was an award for interactive innovation simple as that , and anyone that says halo's Online integration is not innovative has not sat down and played the game since they were bias in the first place....this was not some award for GOTY like your all acting

this so called "innovation" award for the less than average "Halo3" game is just adding insult to injury.

Yeah, it's weird. I mean, if the competition is Wii Fit and GTA4...heck, you know I'm now huge MS fan, but I'd totally put Halo3 over those two. Halo3 would beat GTA4 and Wii Fit in every category....except girlfriend booty-shaking.

But getting back to what you were saying...yeah...is that really even the best list? Are those the most innovative games this year? Ouch.

I mean, first off, Halo3 was LAST year.

i might have done if it wasnt for the fact that i was howling with laughter at the very idea that anyone who wasnt being paid a large backhander could possibly use the words halo3 and innovation in the same paragraph let alone the same sentance.

honestly, its like awarding sony an innovation award for adding rumble suppport to the suxaxis.

the real question is beyond wii fit has their realy been anything innovative this year at all, and is wii fit realy a videogame or is the innovation in the balence board hardware?

I was gonna say the same thing. No one bothered to read why it was awarded. They all saw Halo 3 and their defenses instantly pulled up. Halo's online is top notch. That's why people on GTAIV complain that the multiplayer system is not like Halo3.

I personally think bungie deserves praise for their work on Halo 3 online, while it may offer what PC's have had for years, Halo games are cosistantly pushing consoles closer to the same standards we expect from PC online. This in turn has raised the bar for other games, ok it may not be innovation in the sense that it's not been copied but it is in the sense that it set the standard for console online meaning we all benefit from higher standards.

PS3 fanatics will argue that PSN yada yada, but it was Halo 3 and Gears of War that set the standard to aim for this gen, in my view anyway.

And your view is cross eyed.

And yet my mentioning it hit a sore spot with you, or else you would have ignored it as it would not have bothered you. Anyway way off subject here so i'll leave it there.

lol i did read it, and it still doesn't beat Portal, or wiifit.. hell even PS Eye would have been more innovation with the eye of judgment, even tho i hate the game (was quite hyped about it before its release lol) tbh, i think Portal should have gotten this award!!

EDIT: i just remembered BF2 had/has also a online stats thing anyway lol.. so not really innovation if you ask me lol
