Microsoft's Chris Lewis has attempted to explain why the Xbox 360 performs badly in certain European countries such as France, Italy and Spain. Lewis believes that there is a greater casual stance in the respective markets and people just like to dip in and dip out, but the UK market is closely aligned with the tastes of the US.

Why is Xbox is facing such a challenge in certain countries?

I think there’s a mixture of factors. Where we’ve done well traditionally is where we were in with the first Xbox. The UK is an example of that. The gaming tastes in the UK are quite well aligned with the US – there’s a higher disposable income for a start – we very deliberately set out to appeal to the core space in the first instance and we did that very well. I think the challenges are some of the more Mediterranean markets. Let’s pick on France, Italy and Spain, for example. There’s a much more casual gaming orientation there – people like to dip in and out, they’re not perhaps so likely to buy multiple consoles and they are more price-sensitive markets. I would also put our marketing fairly central to it in as much as I’m not sure we work hard enough to develop locally customisable, culturally connected marketing in the way that we needed to. We are addressing all that and I think we’ve got a much deeper insight, much higher levels of empathy with that now than we had in the first few years and phases.

Thats funny, they are using the UK to say their console is selling?

If you look at the monthly sales charts you will realize that yes the 360 is doing better in the uk than any other European country, but it is still selling piss poor, i mean REALLY PISS POOR, so piss poor that the PS3 is kicking its a$s.

Maybe it's more to do with the fact that europeans are fed up with the XboxUSAonly360.

WTF are you trying to say?? MS do more for us gamers in Europe than Sony so im unsure on your point!!

They do worldwide releases for most games, im yet to see that from our friends as Sony.

I agree it feels that they are looking after there own and nobody else. Just look at live content with video downloads let alone the very Americanized titles.

And saying the U.K. is like America is an insult as we don't even use the exact same language let alone anything else. Maybe the kids are Americanized but not adult population. Nothing against Americans just we are different as we are a different culture and country.

He is probably right in the casual gamer tag for most of Europe but that does not bode well for Microsoft as no casual gamer will pay for live as they won't use it enough.

And chucky_uk Sony has given us a region free console so if we don't like the wait we import at cheaper price. Best thing any console maker has given Europe for me.

/me checks his us import copy of ridge racer. yup, region free.....

but wait, its in a green box could it be that the 360 games arent all region locked? and all this over 18 months ahead of the cut down euro ps3, so who treated who best?

region free, optional hd video and identical spec machines or region free, enforced drm-ray video and a machine with its spec downgraded but price massively increased. my 60gb ps3 cost $850 with a single rumble free controller, it had no hardware emotion engine and not even an hd video lead.

Well, considering that they share the same language and that the US started of as British colonies, it's no big surprise that "the UK market is closely aligned with the tastes of the US."

Europe however, that generally regards the UK as "that uptight island over there", is quite a different matter.

So describing "Europe without UK" as "certain European countries" just might seem a bit insulting to some people. This may indeed affect the tastes of most Europeans (not being English).
