View Full Version : Opinion: Stop moaning about the Xbox 360's RRoD
A journalist believes it's time for everyone to stop moaning about the RRoD despite his fourth system dying on him. Why? Because MS has upped the quality of their repair service, he supports this by stating that he received his Xbox 360 back in seven business days. Also he's thankful the Xbox 360 has a decent line-up of games and Xbox Live of course... so it's time to stop moaning, or is it?
While those three glaring red rings initially made my head shrivel into my neck socket faster than you could say "GTA IV was overrated", I soon came to my senses. Microsoft has slowly been improving with their "oh-****-my-bad" repair service. When my first 360 blew up, it took about two weeks to get a new one, and when the following system crashed, it took about a week and half to return. So, when I used a little something called "erithamatik", I predicted my fourth 360 would arrive in about a week.
And what do you know? After sending my 360 in on a Monday, I got it back the following Tuesday: only seven frickin' business days. Not too shabby, aye? Not only did I get my 360 back in record time, but Microsoft has finally figured out that any random cardboard box can hold a broken 360! That meant there was no extra time waiting for them to ship me a specialized "360-only" box. Life felt good, and a big change of pace occurred: I was finally starting to appreciate Microsoft's customer service.

he only got it back as it was more than likely a quiet period, whereas earlier in the year, and quite a lot of the time, usually,he would have been lucky to get it back within 3 weeks to a month.

So it's OK to wait 7 days to get to use something you paid for and shouldn't break at all? 4 Times in a row no less?
Pull the other one.

Hey kid, I know it sucks to get raped in the butt over and over again by father bill, but don't you think you should just stop complaining? I mean c'mon, he gives you some cream to apply to ur sphincter that makes it all better, and it only takes 1-6 months for it to stop bleeding. But damn kid! Stop whining!

Of course we should keep moaning! Until the problem is fixed you keep moaning to make sure the next Xbox isn't rushed so much its quality of reliability is acceptable.
To stop moaning risks letting MS know they have a 'get out of jail card' vs expectations for other electronics devices.
For today's standards the Xbox breaks down too often - period.

thats the point IT HAS BEEN FIXED ive had no less than 20 rrod consoles pass through my hands this week alone and all were older systems (the latest being 09/2006 manufacture date) and all had the first design heatsinks, i have never seen an elite or any hdmi console rrod yet and if they do its probably going to be the dvd laser that goes before anything else
and a final addition my personal console is a launch 360 and although yesterday i had to install its 3rd dvd drive its never gone rrod and its been bashed hard

agreed on both... i still got my launch 360 from every10minutes.com (im in canada as well muahahhahahahahahahhaha)
it froze ONCE within the first week i got it, and never again. i played it religiously for the first year on live with cod2...
ive got a new 360 as well i got for live only (no fw hack) and its been fine for the past year as well... ive never personally seen a RROD 360, only seen the videos/etc online. ive heard of people with them, but thats it..
either way, i agree. people need to stop moaning about it. m$ has heard all about it, moaning aint going to do ****. hearing RROD is just annoying as all hell now in the sense its not new by any means, and bitching about it just shows you've got nothing better to do then whine about ****.
its still, kind of funny how theres people out there who go through almost half a douzen 360s and still love it... i wonder why ;)
when my ps3's bluray laser dies, like **** im buying another or paying to get it fixed... its going up for parts on a forum and ill continue on with my 360.
The day people stop moaning is the day MS stop fixing it for free. So keep on moaning...

I agree, if the complaints stop MS may think they can get away with it, and to be honest they deserve it anyway for being so careless in testing. Makes me wonder if they did any extreme environmental testing at all.
That said i'd like to see PS3 fanatics stop whining about RRoD. Tho only if they don't or never have owned a 360, as in most cases it's not a complaint about RRoD, but more a case of somthing to make them feel better about having bought a machine they are not entirely secure about. Whats more it takes the whole edge of it as it just makes the issue seem more like a fanboy issue and not the real one that it indeed is.

4th console, perhaps ms should concentrate on making quality hardware instead of making the repair process more streamlined....
So this guy has spent a presumed total of 3 weeks waiting for his console to come back. Sucks for him, i've had my ps3 for almost two years now and never a problem. I am not sticking up for sony, but just commenting on how this guy doesn't seem to think it's a big deal.....

Was gonna post this on that site but it required login.
Don't you think it's up to people to complain when they feel they were wronged, and not you to tell them they shouldn't? So what if you got it repaired fast, you were still a week without a machine you paid for. Would you be okay if your car or your TV or other devices broke down every so often and required at the very least a week to get brought back in working condition? And what happens when your warranty expires? You're basically 100% certain to have it break down again requiring the purchase of another one, while my GameBoy (original grey), Sega Saturn, PlayStation, Dreamcast, Wii (in order of newness) still function flawlessly without any repair trips.
Also, "a journalist" said? More like a hobbyist/fanboy as random as anybody on the internet.

My ps died on me.. about 3 1/2 years after I bought it for like...$179. Just accept the fact that MS made a shitty piece of hardware. Ironic that after all these years my original Xbox still works. Lasted longer than my PS2.

I have a 360, and I love it. But Maybe once the company realized it had a huge problem on it's hands, they should have dramatically UPPED THE QUALITY OF THEIR DAMN CONSOLE so that they wouldn't still have this problem nearly 3 years after release.

The problem for me is Microsoft have made minimal efforts to change the design internally to prevent the rrod problems since admiting the issue. Small changes to heatsinks and eventually a cpu change to reduce temp, all done in a trial and error way it feels to see what they can get away with. And this has come after flat out denial of the problem in the first place.
If they admitted the issue then had a new motherboard design that brought it straight back into the acceptable failure rate at the same time as the 3 yr warranty it would all be good and the mistake forgiven.
On this forum its an easy target still due to the rather loyal fools who think the 3yr warranty fixes the problem an have seemed to have accepted it like they have bent over and had there own red ring from taking it in the arse. They have no credibility for accepting this situation.

the 360 is indeed a piece of hardware wise CRAP, Older consoles get RROD newer falcon chipsets get E74 and disc drive failures. Just had my 4 month old HDMI Falcon replaced by MS, took themm just under 2 weeks for a swap out and had to go to Germany from Uk, they didn't even repair it just sent me a new one. Do that with a Sony console and you'll get delivered to your door a new console within 2 days and they take the old one away.

if you were a completely secure with your choice of PS3 any comments about the games would not bother you as you would be happy with what you have, evidently you are not tho, like good many people on here (and that includes 360 fanboys, don't think i've seen a nintendo fanboy on here yet)

I am well aware of what I posted months ago but have yet to get an rrod or probably due to lack of use and had never heard of the problem when I bought it in feb 2007. But now I certainly would not tolerate it after getting it fixed so would sell it on at that point.
So what have you caught me out about then? My post in this thread is critical of the 360 and Microsoft over the hardware issue and my post you dug up also is negative about the too human delay.
Am I not allowed to find points of all 3 machines good and bad then?

If I was a 360 owner, I'd be very concerned about the RROD and it would still be an issue to me. Just like how I'm concerned about my iPhone. But hey, just like how some people are funneled into buying 360's for various reasons (friends on Live, etc..) the iTunes integration sorta locks me into the iPhone.
That doesn't mean I'm not concerned about its sturdiness and long term operational status.
That said, everything is relative. Most smartphones have similar failure rates. My Treos were even worse. The iPhone seem like a real trooper compared to my Treo experiences.
Aha, here is a better example: So the iPhone is so-so in terms of quality-of-construction (in my experience), and of course I LOVE the interface and features. However, I had absolutely nothing against AT&T before getting one, but due to their horrid coverage in my area (which on their maps, is completely blanketed by the darkest, "best signal" orange) I hesitate in recommending the iPhone to others (in my area at least).
Likewise, the 360 could be awesome, but a fatal flaw is a fatal flaw, and it doesn't get much more fatal than "dead".

The article is somewhat level headed but it does have several points that I don't agree with. As a note I have neither a PS3 or an X360:
"Apart from one or two weeks of game-time, what are you actually losing when your 360 goes?"
The same could be said when my car gets rear ended by someone. Sure the insurance of the other person covers the damage. So the dollar cost to me is none. But the inconvenience to me is large. The same applies here to an obviously lesser degree. A person could easily spend 2-3 hours calling up Microsoft, getting your RMA, boxing your console, taking it to a delivery station, etc. To me this is an inconvenience caused directly by their incompetence.
"To expect them to construct a flawless piece of advanced hardware is asking a bit much"
I don't expect it to be flawless, but I do expect failure rate in the single digit range. There is no excuse for a modern consumer electronics product to have a gigantic failure rate in the first 1-3 years, period. Being in hardware design before, I know that a failure rate of even 5% is totally unacceptable for a consumer electronics product. Unless you abuse the product, it should have a very high survival rate for the 1-3 year range. I expect Microsoft to create a product that behaves like every other product of equal complexity on the market. The Xbox360 is complex, but it's not that complex.
To me The Xbox360 is a great platform. From a software perspective it has a great range of titles, and it has a very well integrated and easy to use online component. It's unfortunate that the physical design of the product was so royally messed up by the designers.

I won't try to defend the 360 horrible failure rate or Microsoft below average customer service (that is only a small bar above "piss poor"), but I tend to notice that most people seem to have a really short term memory about crap hardware.
Anyone remember the infamous front-loading cartridge socket of the NES? You remember how it eventually made every cartridge unplayable over time because of the constant pressure the cartridge put on the connectors that made the cheap metal alloy permanently bent?
Also, the PS1 was known for its particulalry crappy hardware that had the laser disalign itself after some time due to Sony having used cheap plastic parts (or something like that). I was in college at that time, and all my friends were avid gamers and had one. Everyone had at least two or three PS1 (if not more) because they were dying all the time. Remember the temporary fix of putting the PS1 on the side or upside down to make it work? As far as I can tell, Sony never acknowledged any hardware problem, despite PS1s dropping like flies everywhere. Even mine ceased to function at some point. I repaired it myself two times before it crapped for good on me.
And the PS2, while a lot better than the PS1, also had their fair share of issues. One of my friend went through 3 units. Not one was repaired by Sony, he had to buy new every time. And let's not mention the new slim PS2s with a new hardware revision in it that make some games (although very few) act up very weird. I'm sure many people will remember the "don't play DVD movies in your PS2" thing too...
Recently, many DS lites were suffering from a broken hinge problem, apparently from a design flaw because many people had the very same problem (including me). Nintendo refused to acknowledge the issue, stating that there is no problem with the DS. Granted, it doesn't affect the actual electronics of the thing and is more of a cosmetic issue than anything else, but still...
All of this made me think... 360 owners should be very grateful for the PS3... Why? Because it is good competition for the 360. Because I'm quite sure if Microsoft would have been the distant lead for this generation (as Sony has been in the PS1 and PS2 era) they would have acted exactly like Sony did back then and refused to replace any system beyond the standard stupid crap warranty of 3 months or at best, 1 year.
But now, both are pretty much even, duking it out for market shares, and so, this results in them not wanting huge issues to divert sales to the other side. Although it's debatable about how Microsoft effectively compensated for the issue with their 3 year RRoD warranty, at least they did something Sony or Nintendo never did in the past, which is extend their warranty to 3 years, which is the longest one ever seen in that industry. But it's not because it's Microsoft. Microsoft is clearly not a model of ethics, usually (as if any corporation is!!!) but I'm sure if Sony had huge hardware issues with their console, given the current state of "console war", they would probably do something similar to Microsoft. Microsoft had no choice.
Sure, the quality of refurb units they send back seems very crappy (although they seemed to get better lately), but in a sense, it's better than no refurb at all, I guess.
Anyway, while Microsoft takes the distant #1 spot for worst videogame hardware build quality ever, we should not forget that crappy hardware has been around since a very long time. And not only from Microsoft. So we should stop acting like it's anything "new".

haha. You want a system that actually works consumers? That's for pussies! Grow a pair people! Console are supposed to be extreme enough that they run fast and die young. Who wants a console that'll be with you for years and years? It's like trying to get a new girlfriend when your old one is already fat, but still wants you.
That's why I'm a firm supporter of Microsoft (even though I own a PS3:D).
Why won't you just die PS3? I've tried everything! Just die already cause I'm the extreme kind! I love sending my consoles for repair cause I get air miles out of buying the mail packaging. Plus, I need some time off to study and go to bars on friday nights.

You've had much better luck with Sony than I have, every PS (2 of them) or PS2 (4 of them) that died they would talk to me on the phone like it was my fault and refuse to honor the warranty. My first PSP had the UMD drive die after 4 months, they said I must have dropped it and wanted to charge me $99 to fix it, thats when I decided to try out custom firmware. My PS3 is still fine (knock on wood) so hopefully I never have to deal with their shitty excuse for customer service again) but to make MS out ot be a bunch of bastards and sony as a bunch of saints is complete BS, even most Sony fans will admit that.

So we should stop acting like it's anything "new".
this is alot of if's and buts, and alot of references to very old consoles, that still last longer than an xbox 360... the fact is sony nor nintendo have bad hardware, nor do they need to make their warranty 3 years, a 10 year one is understood ( game boy colour still works)... and how in the world cud u bring the almighty "tendo" (lil cuz :D) into this...theyre blowing both sony and bull-crap-o-soft away with sales anyway

2 ps  , 4 ps2's  , and a broken umd drive  ...who r u , the hulk?

Well it's been said over and over again, but I want to feel important so I'll say it too. No people need to continue b*tching about this, ms needs to learn their lesson, and for God's sakes to all those 360 owners out there, stop telling us that your console didn't get it. I haven't seen anyone (well anyone whose opinion we should consider) claiming the 360 has a 100% failure rate, so there will be lucky ones that don't experience it.
This damn reporter, or whatever he is, must be crazy telling people to stop complaining when he himself has gone through 4 consoles. MS needs to throw out RROD consoles and send brand spanking new ones, not refurbished crap that will surely end up going the RROD route sooner or later. I know that's going to cost them, but hey they've got all the money in the world right? If they would have done that from the beginning maybe this problem wouldn't have gotten so out of hand, and they might have saved themselves some money.
That said, ps3 fans talking about the RROD in every thread is tedious, and non productive.... but as someone already said, so is 360 fans crying about installs when the ps3 owners don't mind (well most anyways).

sigh...x-bots have it so good...they get to see pretty red lights(bye bye 360), and all we get is to sit down for a couple minutes :( , and wait for an installl :( (hello game), sigh...why sony, why??? :D
Why is it that all PS3 and 360 fanboys are acting like little children. And the WII fanboys are not??
Didn't some ppl say the WII is for little kids or something like that?
every tread I see the same fucking fanboys over and over again, and crying out that there System is the best, and always saying same stupid stuff over and over again, like RROD, Blu-Ray this and that (I'm no fan off blu-ray my self but I am not talking bad about it), Delaystation, and Xbots and all the other words, plzz grow up, I feel sorry for you all if your more then 14 years old.
The RroD was a really problem, but the new consoles have almost no RroD anymore, there will still be few that will have the problem, just like few PS3 have laser problems, it is normal that electronics have failles, but the RroD fail was really bad for the 360 so thy try to fix it and it is working good, so shut up about it and find something els to talk bad about the 360 now the RroD is getting old.
My elite dit not RroD yet, and I hope it wont, els they would repair it, so not really a big deal, and I play my pc most so if one off my game consoles go "death" I just w8 till I get repaired one back. :D

well i'm sure i will here that i'm lying from all the sony fans but my ps3 story goes like this my netflix movie came in today so i go to play it on my ps3 so i plug it in go to insert the movie and i hear a pop loud enough that my girlfreind heard it in the other room. So now my ps3 is in a box on the desk waiting for sony to be nice enough to send me an email of were to send it. They dont even have a way to talk to some one in real life. Sony has a lot to learn about customer support. so microsoft isnt the only one that has problems with hardware.

Well what can I say... MS has WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more experience in these kinds of matters. Well sony did have problems with the ps1 and ps2, but I don't think they were as severe as the 360 problems, so it's only natural that ms has found a more diligent way to handle these sort of situations.

What journalist? A journalist?
"Because MS has upped the quality of their repair service, he supports this by stating that he received his Xbox 360 back in seven business days."
Uh, it's funny how one of the greatest things about the 360 is it's repair service.
What the hell is that about? "A journalist" gloats that a great thing about the system is the quick turn-around after a repair? This so called journalist is a retard, and should be locked up for being a danger to the community. Soon "the journalist" will think that alcohol makes a great drug simply because it makes you forget you just ran over someone.:D

Did anyone miss the possibly obvious point... he's been telling them he is a journalist all along, meaning priority service over common folks :D
Seriously though, when I buy something it's because I want what I bought - not because I want whatever the service depot happens to slough off on me on that particular day.
There have been far too many cases of people getting back beat up machines after sending in a brand new out of the box machine - this RRoD crap could have and should have been avoided right from the get go, and they bloody well know it over at M$ or they wouldn't have spent so much money to pay for things like this journalist to try and paint it in a better light.

Well if you ron your 4th xbox and you have not learned anything then you are just a dump ass. A system should last past its current generation. The only thing that should be an issue is the general wear and tear of the optical drive. The main board should last for 10+ years. But this is MS you know they want you to constantly buying their broken products. its a shame good games are on such a faulty piece of hardware. Ms wont be getting my money till they shape up.

i just fix em myself, and no i didnt moan, ive burned through far more ps1's than i have 360s and i dont remember anyone moaning about how often they died
They died? *looks at old version 1-style PS1* Must've been lucky.
But anyway, that opinion is bullshit. Their customer service improved because now "the book"--the one their reps cannot stray too far from--immediately has them say they'll fix RRODs almost no questions asked--certain friends have been unfortunate enough to have questions asked up the a-hole like it was the U.S. Army questioning Bin Laden. The fact is, they shouldn't break, and they shouldn't continue breaking three more times. So let's use some "mathematics" and guess the next one will be 4-5 days... then 3-4 days... then... by some miracle Microsoft will do next day shipping back and forth for you for not extra cost so you'll get it in 2-3 days... then... and then it'll be quite impossible for you to get your Xbox 360 any sooner due to the constraints of time and our current technology--unless they predict when you'll get RROD and send you a replacement in advance, but I doubt it. And then will you finally give up on the 360? No, you'll keep sending it in because you're too dumb to learn your lesson.
By the way, not all of the Xbox 360s are horribly self-destructing machines, I have one friend--out of dozens who own Xbox 360s--who hasn't had to send his console in for repair once. Hurray for him. :D

also tell your friend to signup to continous play warrenty offered by Sony for £5 a month, he'll then get lifetime warrenty for the unit even if its broke already he can signup and claim.

this is a neat way to look at complete system failure...quite marvelous...why didnt microsoft take this dumb@$$ approach to the red ring...
microsoft, "oh hey look at it this way, the red ring is good, you get a new console."
consumer, "but y not just stop it from failing in the first place"
microsft to bouncer, "... silence that fool...i want him GONE"
guy....it shouldnt red ring to begin with...and you do know that microsft wud hav gotten sued had they not extended their warranty...if you release 10 mil consoles, and 9 mil fail, ure gonna pay somehow, whether on your own accord (or your lawyers), or by paying for it in court.

Let's see I've got 2 options:
a) Pay £5 a month to play online, and depending on when I bought my 360 be in constant fear that it will crap out.
b) Pay £5 a month to have my console insured, knowing that I will probably not use it for a long time, and play online for free.
Actually I don't know if it's even possible, but here goes another:
c)Don't pay for either things, if my console craps out, then get the £5 plan and send it in for an exchange afterward (if it's possible at all that is).

yeah £5 is pretty good but lets be honest in an ideal world every electrial item we buy would never die but it does including the invincble ps3:(
and as for the online side of things i have read plenty of propaganda that says it sucks on ps3 LOL not being a ps3 owner i wouldn`t know and a 360 for 40 notes well lets just say there is plenty of crack heads around these parts LOL
the reason i am a 360 owner is a)it landed first which means bigger games catalogue b)it was cheaper
i still don`t understand why people defend these big companys so strongly($ONY & MICRO$OFT) at the end of the day these companys don`t give a toss about us they are only interested in making money.
