Ben Heck has gone and torn apart a new 60GB Xbox 360 and has noticed one important change to the motherboad. MS has removed the bottom memory chips to prevent any possible avoided ove-heating which could lead to the dreaded RRoD.

The honorable Benheck has graciously torn apart one of the new 60GB Xbox 360s for us, and its innards are sorta blah, but there’s at least one important change going on.

Microsoft appears to have removed the bottom memory chips so as to prevent the overheating that leads to the red ring of death. We can assume, then, the the memory chips on top have doubled in capacity.

Other than that, it’s more or less the same Falcon board we’ve seen for a little bit. The DVD drive is a Lite-On, which may be useful news for those of you looking to flash your drive for your own ends.

More likely aimed at cutting costs rather than preventing anything, probably 4x IC is now cheaper than 8x IC.

Then it wouldn't be a repaired Falcon board. That'd be the Opus board which MS is using just for repairs. People will no longer get a refurbed board back. They'll get a new one.

If microsoft can fix RROD completely, i'm prepared to shell out my money to buy one. I currently have PS3 and I have been watching microsoft to completely fix RROD.

nows a good time. rrod is a generic hardware failure code. it will always be around since MANY things cause it. as far as overheat issues tho falcon boards are a huge step and jasper should eliminate the usual issues with heat

The 360 is pretty cheap nowadays anyway. You might consider RROD prevention by removing the xclamps yourself and replacing them (lots of info on how to do this). I have done it myself and had my box since Nov 2006 which had a few glitches (no red lights though just a lockup here n there) before i did it and now doesnt.

Obviously this voids your warranty... if you was flashing the drive it would void it anyway.

They had made so many revisions and still not fixed it. Don't know why they bother wasting their money. They should just carry on fixing/repairing all the duff ones that people send in.

theres not a lot of revisions, they are making money not wasting, and they stopped fixing old broke ones now and are offering the opus for refurbs. all the while solving the issue early 360s were plagued with......

Exactly, I believe that MS said awhile back that every console made after I think it was either July or August of 2008 would have the 65nm Processors so obviously this too would have been done to all the newer 360s in general, apparently including older ones if repaired. I guess the Red Ring of Dead is...Dead
