Around two dozen protestors decided to pay Ubisoft a visit and protest against the Xbox 360 version of America's Army which is deemed to violate international law as its teen rating allows 13 year olds to play on it.

Ubisoft felt the full force of San Francisco's two dozen or so most dedicated daytime protesters Wednesday, as the mostly ruly mob descended upon the gamemaker's headquarters to have a good old-fashioned demonstration.

At issue was the company's Xbox 360 version of America's Army, the Department of Defense-funded shooter that purports to present a realistic simulation of military operations. The game, or so the logic went, is being used in violation of "international law" because its Teen rating allows children as young as 13 to play it. So, under the mantle of "Stop the Military Recruitment of Children," members of the group Bay Area Direct Action, fresh from staging a die-in at Rep. Nancy Pelosi's house, turned their attention to Ubisoft.

"They should go to Sega down the street and protest the 360 version of Sonic the Hedgehog," I said to Chris Baker, getting an early start on a running gag that I would use in various forms throughout the day.

Should they really be protesting against Ubisoft or the ESRB?

games like these disgust people like them (including me) because they encourage what is already happening all over 3rd world countries - people get trained at an early age to become soldiers
not everyone is meant to be a soldier but this encourages them

Normally I wouldn't buy that argument, but with this particular game (where the software is based on reality as opposed to realistic-fantasy) along with the noticably suspicious minimum age, I think the motives are clear.

Child branding has successfully worked before:

Thats exactly what I was thinking, Ubisoft don't give the game rating ESRB do, so technically it should be them they have the issue with.

If a hardcore porn film was given a pg rating, it wouldn't be the producers fault, but the film rating board.

Anyway, this game has been around for years with no complaints, what political agenda is this being used to further now I wonder

YAAY PROPAGANDA! Now on 360 and soon on PS3. The USA acting like China, Nazi Germany or Soviet, through a game! Fascism at it's best.

As much of a shocker as this may be, I would be out there with them too.
I myself am prior service and have seen what the game was when it was first released back in 98-99. It was a war simulator first and formost. That wasn't a game as it was only given to service members. It was violent and gruesome and realistic. Only for PC. Over the time, they took away some of those military elements and soften it up a little bit to spread even further to younger adults, then teens.

Why do you think I left? 20 years to retirement sounds good, but it ain't always about the money. It's seriously fucked up (In the army or marines that is.)

That's the same thing I was trying to say in a past thread regarding this. Neither the army or Ubi have anything to do with the ratings. Unless they are claiming the army influenced the ESRB, but it would still be the ESRB's fault first and foremost.
