Pretty hard to believe, but the Madden game series has finally turned 20. NFL Madden 09 marks 20 years in existance for the game franchise and usatoday.com has decided to take a trip down memory lane. Here is what the original Madden game looked like back in 1989...

so... madden came out in 1989, and its 2008, but they're celebrating 20 years?

That's pretty old. What are the thoughts of the young'uns? What is it like when a gaming series (especially one that is still published) predates you?

In my experience, arcade games were there from as early as I can remember. And arcades were quite popular. Home gaming didn't really exist and it was a lot crappier than the arcade.

I think one thing about watching something develop from its inception, is you might be more enthusiastic about that technology, and you may have more ideas about what it should be used for/where it should go. As that tech matures, maybe you'll see that some of your ideas were prescient. Others not.

I remember growing up and always thirsting after a 20+ player deathmatch, and hearing about it in those specialized mech cockpit arcades. And now, it's commonplace.

But take a technology that completely pre-dates me, like TV, and I really take it for granted, and don't think about it much.

I was about to say the same thing. In madden's defense I think 92 (or one of the ones that came out on the SNES) was great, and the other ones weren't as terrible as they have been in the past few years. The series that EA totally murdered was Need For Speed, even today the first one, on the 3do at least, is probably better than any of the recent ones.

Need For Speed 2: Hot Pursuit on the PS2 was a blast to play. The GC/Xbox versions were ported by a less talented developer, and didn't compare well.

I did kinda enjoyed them all, to a certain degree, until Porsche Unleashed. Still I just think the first one was by far the best one, I was literally glued to my seat the first time I played it, very few games have captivated me so much. I would say that the only 2 games that drew me in more than the original NFS were Ninja Gaiden on the NES, and FF IV (II in the US) which was my first RPG game that I liked. It's funny I played an rpg on the SNES before any on the NES, so I had to backtrack to get all those rpg games I missed playing.
